The husband is French and his wife is Japanese, it seems she does most of the cooking while he does most of the wine preparation. What took me by surprise here is the exceptional level of quality in every bite of food. We were truly mesmerized with the flavor and the sourcing of the ingredients, I really do believe this place does all organic farming, and because of their location out in the French countryside, farm to table is not something they market, it's just who they are. We ordered the classic croquet madame, and it was easily one of the best bites of food I've ever had in my life. I don't understand how they achieved this level of flavor with ingredients that everyone else in France would be able to have access to if they looked hard enough. I was hoping to come back here the next day, but they were closed on Wednesdays. We can't wait to come back on our next trip.

Pickwicks in Beaune, once a passable--if overpriced--spot, has deteriorated into a miserable, hostile joke of a venue. And at the center of its downfall? A doorman named Florian, whose arrogance, rudeness, and sheer incompetence make him the worst kind of gatekeeper. This place used to have some redeeming qualities despite the steep prices, but now? It's a shell of its former self. The atmosphere is stale, the service is nonexistent unless you enjoy being treated like an inconvenience, and the so-called "hospitality" is outright hostile. Florian, in particular, deserves a special mention for being an insufferable, power-tripping piece of work. If his job is to make people feel unwelcome, then congratulations--he's excelling. His attitude alone is enough to make you walk away, but if you do somehow get in, expect overpriced drinks served with an eye-roll and the ambiance of a dying pub that doesn't even realize it's already six feet under. Save yourself the frustration. Pickwicks is not worth your time, your money, or your patience. There are far better places in Beaune where you'll actually be treated with basic decency.

I was really looking forward to their Boeuf Bourguignon with fresh tagliatelle, but the sauce only seemed to taste like salt and the pasta was not dressed (olive oil or butter) or seasoned at all and was very dry. Ended with the crème brûlée but its hard to mess that up. While the restaurant is definitely beautiful inside and the service was good, there were better and less expensive choices in Beaune.

We ordered the escargots for the first time and it was delicious. There was a waiter turn who spoke English and he was able to explain the menu to us. I had the mussles, which was delicious and my husband had the beef carpaccio, what he also liked. It seems like a lot of locals eat here as well or just grab a drink. The wine selection was fantastic. Highly recommended for a good French dinner a little outside of the center of Beaune!

UPDATE October 8, 2024: Had dinner again at La Lune last…read morenight. In the year since our last visit they haven't missed a beat. It is still terrific. I made a reservation mistake and thought that we would not be able to eat there but a stroke of luck had us down for an 8PM reservation the next night. Great little hole in the wall like Japanese restaurant with mostly Sushi bar seating. We had the edamame, chicken karaage, some incredible mushroom dish, the Coquilles, tuna tartar and YES the fabulous pork chop which we missed last year as per below. It was all wonderful and since we drove down from Strasbourg just to eat at La Lune our expectations were high. Terrific at every turn. The one thing I am angry with myself for is not getting the name of the wonderfully talented Japanese chef and the gent that runs the front of the house (with some help from a capable colleague this year). I really would like to recognize them by name but it will have to wait until next year. Very few restaurants are a total hit but La Lune is one of them. Cannot wait to return.
