Warmly greeted at the door and brought to a comfortable table immediately, I knew it was going to be a good time. Clearly the host working the door understands how to be pleasant and welcoming, when we told him we were hungry, he brought us a platter of popadoms to get started. Thin, crunchy and brittle, they were exactly what we needed to get warmed up for dinner. Drinks? Check. Appetizers? Check. Mains? Check. All perfect. They have a massive menu with all the usual favorite Indian curries ranging from just mild all the way up to nuclear hot. We started off with Kingfisher and Cobra beers, then a selection of appetizers. The Chicken Tikka was perfectly cut into little bit size pieces and the shish kabob easily divided amongst us. Harder to divide where the massive Onion Bhaji that were at least three inches in diameter. All yummy. Mains. My Lamb Passanda with Pilau Rice was spicy without being too hot and went down a perfect treat. I know that my tablemates also enjoyed their dinners including a Chicken Jalfreezi and something else I'm sad to say that I can't recall. All in all, a great meal and I am extremely pleased. The lighting in the restaurant was a little dim and quite red. The tables have legs at the corners which means that you'll be rubbing against the person next to you. Fine if you're friendly.

The set menus include a main dish, rice, and a number of side dishes plus salad, and are very good value for money. The area is open and spacious, looking onto the rest of the floor court. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, and offer a service expected of an Indian restaurant in what is arguably more of a fast food environment.

We raised a problem with the waiters that both the hot curries (ceylon and dhansak) as they were both very mild (same as the tikka massala). We were simply told that the chef cooked it that way (despite the menu stating the curries as very hot). One waiter did try the curry and agree that it was mild, but there was no effort to resolve the problem, no offer of replacement or refund. If you like your curries, then you will hate this place. You would be better off with a microwave curry from budgens down the road. Bad points rude staff with little knowledge of the menu - mediocre food - run down interior (think 80's curry house) Good points - There were plenty of spare tables on a Saturday night.

So my opinion is Taj is currently no.1, it used to be the one by the railway, (you'll know which one I mean) but the service and management changed. I appreciate everybody to their own taste and there are many excellent Indian restaurants out there which you will all prefere and enjoy. On expenses : D…read more One of my colleagues has eaten here a couple of times and we wandered through the windy cobbledy streets of Norwich trying to find it, and when we eventually did it was like an Oasis in the Tombland desert to me, on account of I was absolutely hank marvin. We had poppadoms, starters, drinks, mains and a naan and paretha for just over £50 for three people, which is pretty bargainous if you ask me. I did stick to water all night, because I am sensible, rather than Old Speckled Hen like my compatriots, but still. I had the spinach bhaji to start, followed by spinach and lamb curry with pilau rice - all very tasty indeed (I love spinach, I'm like Popeye, me). The only teensy complaint would be that the lamb was a wee bit chewy rather than tender, but the flavours were spot on, the service was fantastic (prompt, helpful, friendly and warm), there was a bollywood film on a plasma screen telly opposite me, and the lads enjoyed their food so as I can't give 4.5 stars I'll round it up.

The second was the complete opposite of the scale, the service was slow and poor, the chicken in both our meals was substandard - it was that very strong chicken smell and taste which we have had at other indian restaurants and we have subsequently never revisited. We had to leave all the chicken pieces and complained to the waiter, he never passed this on to the management so when we came to pay we had to discuss the problems again which resulted in a reduced bill, but I should not have paid anything. However we will not be returning again so it is their loss. Don't be taken in by the special offers, nothing compares with quality food. The 'Red Rose' next door is far superior and the 'Taj' at the top of the High street beets them all.
