Starters can be shared or individual; the garlic mushrooms with spiced potato cakes are particularly moreish! Main courses are generous in proportion, without being huge, but its the flavour of the dishes that will blow you away! It seems to me that The Balti House has everything going for it...apart from the food. The location is fairly good, close to Hockley and only 5 minutes or so walk from the Market Square. So, what's wrong with the food? Well, it's not that there is anything terrible about any of it, but i've never eaten anything there and thought "Wow!" when i've tasted it. The curries have always seemed to me not too dissimilar from ones that I can cook at home...and call me old fashioned, but when I go out for a meal, I want to be paying to eat something that I couldn't make at home. I just can't quite put my finger on what it is that is missing from the food here. Fresh coriander perhaps? Maybe they are actually healthier and contain less ghee / oil and salt...I don't know. All I know is, something is missing. Still, given the other options for a late night curry near Nottingham city centre, you could do worse. Noor Jahan on Mansfield Road, or the disgusting Sapna on St James Street are both worse than here. If you are in the area at the end of a night and you don't fancy pizza / kebab / chips, I guess you could do worse than give The Balti House a try. After all, what I appreciate in a curry may be different to what you do, and you might rate this place more highly than I do.

The decor and table settings are plain compared with some Indian restaurants, but the quality of the food and service are spot on. The owner and staff are friendly and very willing to make recommendations. I've had the Lamb Madras, Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Rogan Josh so far and each has the requisite layers of flavour. I tend to judge an Indian chef's skill based on an ability to apply heat without destroying the underlying explosion of flavour in the blend of spices used as a basis for the sauce. The food prepared here does not disappoint. The garlic naan may not be quite as light and fluffy as in other places, but the garlic is baked in and not added as an afterthought. I'll be back!

England was having the worst heat wave in recorded history in 1993, so after several sweaty nights I finally booked a hotel instead of B&B to have air conditioning and a pool for one night. They closed the pool to add chemicals at 4:00PM and we warned a swimmer before he got in and then forgot about it. We asked the concierge for the best Indian Food, noting that we had a car and didn't mind driving, and he pointed us here. The forgotten swimmer was in the family that owned it. He certainly remembered us. It was one of the most amazing meals we've ever had. I doubt many people get as much free food as we did, but it was all to our tastes based upon what we did order, and we were sad that we had no way to bring the leftovers with us after breakfast. All in all, two adults and an eight year old had some nine different items, and all were the best of its type we'd ever tasted. I recall the peshwari naan as amazing, the chicken biryani light and not at all greasy, everything was spiced flawlessly to my wife's generally milder tastes, and the korma was a revelation. They were very crowded, but we showed up as the Saturday crowd was thinning. Our next trip to the UK we will plan a return visit even though there is less scheduled for our next trip in the Midlands.

The restaurant is larger than you first think as it extends on two floors into the back, but its always advisable to book as its full most evenings (weekends at least). The first time i visited i ordered the Thali which comes as a 3 course meal (which a thali main) and then on my second visit i ordered one of the richest most delicious indian lamb dishes i've ever had. You cant go wrong as every dish on offer is delicious! The only difficulty we had was understanding the layout of the menu. Its a little difficult to navigate, so i recommend taking a quick look on the simplified board outside first.
