I was always a fan of Dancing Wasabi....recommended to everyone coming to visit town. The standards have gone off a cliff (I think for cost control reasons and all the time half prices in a newer much larger location). The half price at DW doesn't excuse giant pieces of Romaine lettuce sticking out of my Spider roll (no crab!!!). After giving them several tries since that experience I decided I need a new sushi spot. I tried Bamboo House simply because I got a flier in the mail. LET ME TELL YOU, I cannot believe we have such amazing sushi on the West side!!!! Nope, there's no half price incentives, but paying full price (on a low income) doesn't bother me in the least. Service and quality are fabulous. I have been several times, they remember me when I come in, and the sushi is AMAZING. I highly recommend the Sex Roll along with the spicy tuna. They use real slabs of A-grade tuna....not the little shreds seen at other restaurants. I am so glad to have them on the West Side, and even for those who don't live near, it is worth the drive! Mediocre sushi. Only a couple on the west side to choose from. Rude. Called them a few times before someone answered to get a order to go. Told me 15 min. Got there at 4:15 -3 signs on the place say open 4-10 sundays and the door was locked. Sat in my car in the rain called back they told me 10-20 more minutes. I'm a sushi snob always in search of fresh and tasty sushi options that won't require me to take out a second mortgage on my home. My friend Joe got me to try this place after I complained about the severe lack of good sushi options on the westside. I was not disappointed. The chef prepared an excellent plate that looked very professional and I would even say artistic which was a complete shock. The fish itself was fresh and clean as to be expected from any other top dollar sushi place downtown. Overall a very tasty, fast, and affordable place to grab some sushi. It's not well known yet because it's relatively new and still trying to find a solid customer base BUT with continued performance like this it will be the sushi destination for westsiders when word gets around. Hopefully prices stay reasonable. EDIT: Needs to get those prices down. read more

Ok sushi. Nothing outstanding. Very small place. Only a few chairs. Bench seats have carpet rugs as cushions. When the door opens you immediately feel the cold air. Temperature of place is 65 degrees. It's 28 outside. House salad was watered down with runny ginger dressing. Rolls weren't horrible but weren't the best for the price. No half price sushi at all. Average roll around $13-$15. I think I'd rather drive downtown or Hyde park for better quality and cheaper. read more

I had to revise my review from yesterday. This will be the last time I ever spend my hard earned money at this place! The fried rice we ordered was the soggish nastiest rice on the planet! Bamboo House is tucked away, behind some fast food joints, off Harrison Avenue. As a result, I didn't even realize it was there until today. I wanted to take my daughter for sushi and trying to do that on a Saturday really limits you. I was glad I found Bamboo House. The food was great, the restaurant was clean and the staff was also nice. I'd definitely go back again. We got the spider roll and the spicy tuna roll along with some fried rice. Ridiculous. What I mean to convey with that word is a mixture of endearment and insult. The best way to break this down for you is by analyzing the characteristics of this restaurant individually: Location: Middle of nowhere. Seriously!!! The long drive over made me yearn for delicious food. However, I would not be in luck (foreshadowing). Decor: What is this place trying to be? Look on one wall, and it's a bunch of trendy hanging lights and bamboo silhouettes. Look at the wall directly across it, and you see a bunch of taped up magazine cutouts and a handwritten partial sushi menu. Near the bathroom, there is a haphazard array of wall mirrors and curious fake baby sunflowers. The bathroom was my favorite, though -- every inch of every wall, and the door, has been painted Pepto Bismol pink. I am not being sarcastic when I say I liked this. Food: First off, this place is owned by Chinese people. The confirmatory giveaway was hearing them speak Mandarin, but it was also the cream cheese wonton appetizer swimming in red sauce, as well as the side of amazingly stale fried wonton pieces that came with my peppery hot and sour soup (seriously, was there an entire tablespoon of black pepper in that shiet??). Plating is not their forte, either. Unfortunately, overpricing menu items IS their forte. Womp. There is a ton of sushi on the menu, but for the portion size/quality/price I would much rather go to Dancing Wasabi. Service: Actually, pretty good. By good, I mean attentive and efficient. It's a small place though. I think there are 5 tables total. So yeah, it better be good service! Fortune cookies. Less stale than the fried wontons. At least I had the pleasure of laughing my ass off at the most pessimistic fortune I've ever seen in a while: "Think of the danger while things are going smoothly." If you're Asian, there is better food to be had elsewhere in the city. Like I could probably give you a list of 20 places. Placed an order for take out and they had it all bagged up and sitting on a table accessible by anyone which made me question a lot of things. Once I read the receipt stapled to the bag and realized it was in fact my order the woman yelled at me insisting it wasn't my order. She then tried to give it to someone else who was also waiting on a to go order. Made me feel really uncomfortable that my food was not only sitting out, but that it was almost given to the wrong person. I waited over an hour on a very casual Friday. Udontastic! I'm a sucker for Japanese food. My childhood home was decorated with an assemblage of Japanese-related art and reading. (My father was a martial arts teacher & had a soft spot for Kendo.) When my father got his first college degree, I remember going to the only Japanese restaurant in Cincinnati in the 80s - The Samurai - but I don't remember the food. The Samurai was a Japanese hibachi grill & before we could eat, my grilled both her hands on the table. We made a rush trip to the emergency room. But the allure of Japanese food stuck, and the mystique grew. I learned to love buckwheat noodles. Shabu shabu was my go to birthday dinner when I lived somewhere I could get shabu shabu. Sushi is my friend. So when my Lisa told me that a Japanese restaurant opened in Dent, less than 5 minutes from my mother-in-law's house, I was thrilled. Here's the rundown: sushi is good and standard. The dumplings and the shumai are both must haves, particularly if you're dining on a cold evening; the noodly, porky goodness is perfect to take the chill from one's bones. But the udon is where it's at. My Lisa believe that they make their udon in house & I don't know if that's the case, but the noodles taste like they're made homemade. They are plump and flavorful, without losing their chew. The sauce is light enough so as to not detract from the noodles & the vegetables aren't at all mushy. The only downsides to the restaurant that I could see was that the TV over their sushi bar was distracting & they didn't have buckwheat noodles. Small things, and enough to take them from a 5 star to a 4 star in my opinion, but piddling things. You should go here. If you're in Dent (And why wouldn't you be?) this is the place to go. We enjoy coming here. The chef/owner always makes a point to get to know his customers and the food is quite good. I was a little confused about the other reviews because everything we have had has been delicious. But everyone has their own tastes and ours are delighted by the fare here. Even the sushi is something to be happy about (and I have had sushi in Hawaii, Japan and various other places known for good fare) The restaurant is small, but that is not a bad thing. The reason it gets 4 rather than 5 stars is because the price is a tad high. But that won't stop us from going back. read more

Who knew there is decent sushi on the west side? We just happened to come across Bamboo House, tucked away in a strip mall on the far west side, one day. After checking out the cleanliness of the place (very clean) we ordered a pile of rolls. Fresh and delicious! The plating was also done very artistically and the prices were about average, maybe even lower than I would expect. We had our 2 year old with us and the two people working (I think they were the owners) made us feel welcome with him, which I appreciate. He had the veggie fried rice while the rest of us had rolls. The decor is eclectic and the place is small, but who cares? It is a casual place. The food and the service are great. looking forward to returning. read more

We used to go here a lot. Their sushi is very good. However, the past two times we got take out, we arrived after 20 minutes like they told us and when we got there they hadn't even started our food. So, the owner went back and made our udon as fast as possible and both times it tasted burnt and disgusting. Recently carried out sweet & sour chicken and steamed veggies. Veggies were fresh and cooked very well with good flavor. However the chicken was very tough & breading had an odd taste to it. Fresh Chinese food on the West Side. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't eaten there about 5 times in the 3 weeks it has been open. John is a one of a kind sushi chef who is a master of his craft. Helen is such a nice woman you may have to hug her. Just about everything here is made FRESH, IN-HOUSE. So worth the trip, not too expensive, and if you love sushi, you love this. I've had the Sex Roll 3 times now and it is one of the greatest things I've ever tasted, and the presentation, beautiful. Karen has had the House Special and the Chicken Teriyaki, both were delicious and great portions. Best fresh fried rice you could imagine, so light and delicious. Plus homemade chinese dumplings, you've got to be kidding. Helen and John tell me they make these themselves in a large machine in back. Mmmmmm...!!! We are just going to keep going back, and as the sign on the door says, Liquor License Coming Soon. If you are a fan of Chinese food and Sushi, this is not your average Chinese take-out. For shopping center sushi, this place isn't bad. They have great presentation and the sushi was pretty good. Their prices are a little steep ($13 for a specialty roll), but I guess Cincinnati sushi should be pricy. We've been coming for years as I prefer sushi with very little rice in the roll and obviously the best tasting sushi grade fish. Granted it is not cheap, but think quality vs.quantity.
