This time around, I ordered a few dishes from the lunch menu along with some items from the regular menu. Here's what I had. House Tom Yum - A pretty tasty bowl of noodles in a tom yum broth. It wasn't too sour, but the flavors were good. A simple and tasty dish. (4/5) Crispy Hainan Chicken - Really good, almost like fried chicken. It came with a large portion of rice and a decent-sized piece of chicken. It also included a bowl of soup, all for around $12. Worth it. (4.5/5) King Noodle - This is the only place I've ever seen this dish, and it's good. Fried noodles smothered in a rich gravy with seafood. Overall, it was really tasty. (4/5) Overall, Banana Bay is always pretty good. I will say the service is a bit lacking, as we had to flag down the staff whenever we needed something, but the food tastes good. Nothing we had is authentic. Had spicy Shrimp fried rice, papaya salad, crispy pork with Chinese broccoli. Ordered the papaya salad mild. It came with whole dried shrimps, no palm sugar taste. Dried shrimps are supposed to be smashed with garlic and chili to enhance the flavor but this papaya salad tastes just bland. Spicy shrimp rice is the most disappointed of all. Chef seems to forget to put salt, shrimp paste and anything to make it spicy. The mild and blend papaya salad has more flavor than this spicy shrimp rice. How could that be??? Where is the shrimp paste taste? Can you at least fake it with fish sauce? The only thing authentic in this dish is probably the Thai jasmine rice. I dont know how an owner can come into work and be proud the way it has been left corroded, literally torn apart at the seats and dirty as fck on the floors, tables, counter and walls, and do nothing about it for years. And then your wait staff have the audacity to seat patrons on booths with seats with HUGE torn holes with the upholstery foam fillings exposed with yellowish dirt stains. I can only imagine what the condition of the owners own home must be like if he cant even get multiple booths seats repaired at the very least in his own restaurant. Its so sad, this place used to be a happening spot. Its more than half empty for a reason. i would be embarrassed to bring anyone here. Do better. The food is not bad but hard to enjoy knowing if the patron area is this trashed, whats the condition and sanitation like of the food prepping area? Banana bay for those who live around here has been a staple! Appreciate that they open up late for those who want a late night grub and get bogo drinks. They have so many different dishes, drinks, and desserts. They have definitely upgraded their look with constant decorations based on the holiday and bringing in live bands and musicians. Pad Kee Mao 3.5/5 had perfectly cooked tender noodles, a good amount of spice and flavor, basil, and some bell peppers. I picked beef for this dish but didn't know it came shredded. It lacked protein and vegetables and was mostly noodles but the flavor was good and since I had the crying tiger, this was a good pairing. Hands down such an experience coming here!!! Haven't been here in years but the place still is very lively and upbeat for a great night out. There was a live music band that started playing at 9pm and the voices of the lady and the man were very impressive. To the Filipino folks, this really brought a sense of home!!! One of the few places I would visit at night, for food, drinks and entertainment. I tried the crispy Hainan chicken, it was delicious but i wish they have the traditional garlic ginger sauce. So so sad that I have to write this review. I finally tried this place after always passing by it and hearing about it from my friends. The ambiance and decor is nice. It was empty; it was a weekday. I sat down and the waitress took our orders and brought us sharing plates. The plates were stacked on top of each other and when I lifted the first plate, the second plate was dirty!!! I've been to Banana Bay multiple times over the years and the food has always been consistently decent, especially considering there's not many Thai restaurants in the Rowland Heights/City of Industry area. Parking is usually tough to find, especially if you come during peak lunch and dinner hours. This time however, we decided to have a large party (around 70 people) at Banana Bay. They have a private room that can comfortably seat around 60 people, but Banana Bay offered to section off the back portion of the restaurant for our large group. We ordered a variety of catering trays including Pad Thai, Yellow Curry, Chicken Satay, Pad See Ew, Pad Kee Mao and Calimari all ranging in price from $150 - $200 per tray depending on the item. The food when ready when we arrived and served in large chafing dishes. They also had a large dispenser of self-serve water for guests which was helpful for our big party. We ordered 9 dishes plus a tray of rice and had plenty of food leftover. I appreciated how the food was set up for our party, but did wish there were servers to come by and check in on us occasionally as that was non-existent. I went up to the bar two separate times to order Hennessy Shots for a friend, and was acknowledge last despite waiting at the bar before other patrons came both times. Totally biased review incoming!! Banana Bay is pure nostalgia for me. I've been coming here with my family for years, and I've got a lot of fond memories, especially with my grandfather. Flavor of thr food is good. The seasoning and sauces are great, but the quality of the meats is terrible especially the ground ones, which tend to be way too fatty. The calamari is chewy rubbery. Pretty standard Thai overall, but comforting in that familiar, dependable way. The place is big, the decor leans a little tacky, yet somehow it works. Great lunch specials, too. We got take out from Banana Bay for dinner because we were just indulging ourselves today. Everything was still fresh and flavorful. Here's what we ordered: Crying Tiger ($18.50): Grilled rib-eye steak, Thai-marinated and seared. It had that beautiful char on the outside with juicy tenderness inside. Tangy and smoky. Con was just a little tough/stringy in some cuts. Drunken Noodles ($17.50): Not as spicy as I was expecting. The chili and basil combo was fragrant and addicting, and the wide rice noodles soaked up every bit of flavor. The peppers and mint gave it layers. The chicken was kinda ground up and gave an interesting contrasting texture. Pad See Ew ($17.50): Comfort in a container. The noodles were soft but not mushy, with a beautiful smoky wok hei flavor. The Chinese broccoli gave just enough crunch to balance the chewy noodles, and the chicken was tender and well-marinated. Pickup was smooth and right on time, shoutout to the staff for being quick even during a dinner rush. I have so many memories of this place back in the day. We used to make the drive to Rowland Heights to hang out because it was open until 1am. I believe they are open from 11am-midnight almost every day and until 1am on Friday and Saturday. The food used to be good, but now it is okay. Came here for the first time after hearing some great reviews, and it definitely lived up to the hype. I had the Crispy Hainan Chicken--perfectly crispy, and the rice was on point. We also tried the Thai Fried Rice, which was flavorful and well-balanced. To finish, the Mango Sticky Rice was a solid choice--fresh and not overly sweet. We attempted to get their attention multiple times to bring us the remaining chairs needed, but the staff members were busy taking care of other parties. The multiple times we got unnoticed in the beginning asking for help got awkward. The ambience also brought down the overall experience significantly. The restaurant was drastically loud due to hired DJs taking rounds to perform their music. However, this restaurant isn't a club. If this restaurant needs to provide high chairs to babies, I don't see how club music would be appropriate for the many families here. Celebrations at restaurants are for reuniting with family and friends and having meaningful conversations while eating tasty food. That can't happen when you have dubstep and EDM blasting into our ears. It could be fun for some people but certainly not all, especially on a Thursday night. The ambience was chaotically incoherent in that the TVs were also playing game shows and the news at the same time. The food was tasty and savory. I had pad see ew with chicken and other fried rice dishes. I didn't sense anything oily, and the dishes I tried tasted fresh. The plastic utensils made eating a little inconvenient. Serving spoons would've helped with the shared dishes, especially the multiple fried rice plates we ordered. Very delicious overall but wish it came out later towards the end and not with the entrees since it was just sitting there for a while. Calamari: It was nicely fried and didn't taste heavy or oily at all. Definitely a must get! Hainan Chicken: The chicken was breaded lightly but perfectly crispy and had a ton of meat. It also came with a side of soup and was refreshing and hearty. Pineapple Fried Rice: This was a huge portion and was more than enough for two people to share. There was a good amount of chicken and pineapple in the dish but not too much where it was overpowering. It was also pretty flavorful overall. I don't love pineapple fried rice but this was one of the better ones! Chicken Curry: Unfortunately the taste and flavor of this dish was pretty lacking. There was a ton of chicken overall but other than that the taste was not as fulfilling and the chicken unfortunately was a little dry so I would probably skip on this dish next time. Crying Tiger: This was a huge portion and the meat was very tender. I do wish it came with a side of rice though as the meat was pretty salty at times. Luckily I paired it with the pineapple fried rice so it wasn't too bad. Pad Thai: This was also unfortunately not a great dish. The flavor was lacking and although it was a huge portion we couldn't finish. Thai Boat Noodles: This dish was pretty good - the toppings, portion and soup all tasted flavorful. Overall this is a great place for a group dinner - lots of options to choose from and the restaurant is big enough to accommodate large groups. read more
