I really enjoyed the food. I know that some reviews have mentioned the price and potion size but I find that the food is reasonably priced and if you can't finish the food you can always box it to go. Our waitress kept our glasses full and was very pleasant. I ordered the sticky rice with manga but she informed me that they were out. I was sad about it but she made me feel happy about not being able to get what I wanted that I wasn't mad or disappointed. That's great customer service. I ordered the A2: Tofu Tod which is deep-fried bean cured served with sweet and sour sauce and crushed peanuts. I've never been a big fan of sweet and sour just because I don't like the sweetness of sweet and sour. I asked if they had any other sauce and she said no. I tried it with the sweet and sour sauce and it was pretty good. It wasn't as sweet as other sweet and sour sauces that has been served at other places and it went well with the tofu. I also ordered the T3: Chiang Rai Eggplant with chicken (medium spiciness). This dish was fantastic. The eggplant was crsipy on the outside and tender in the middle. The sauce was very flavorful. The dish came with white rice. I like spicy food and the medium spiciness was not very spicy to me. I would order hot/high spiciness if you really want a kick. I gave this place a second shot and got my girlfriend the fried tofu and drunken noodles. Man oh man, the tofu was completely bland. There are so many more Thai restaurants in this area now! I've just moved back from NY and am pleasantly surprised to see that there are many more Asian places. We had the Tom Yum which was authentic albeit a little too sweet but still delicious. Then we tried the Chiang Rai eggplant, which seems to get the best reviews on here. I agree with everyone, the eggplant is cooked perfectly. The outside is lightly crisp and the inside is deliciously soft. The sauce was flavorful with lots of veggies. Then we had a basil dish w/green beans and peppers. A little too many peppers and the scallops were small but ok. Overall I would recommend dropping in if you want authentic Thai flavors! read more

This is my favorite Thai place around, especially for lunch. They're fast, prices are decent, and their hot and sour soup is some of the best I've ever had. It's like the same food as Bangkok Bistro cafe on Van Dyke which leads me to believe they are the same owners, which would make a ton of sense! Portions are generous and I usually have leftovers but there's a few small problems. One, too much rice! They pack on the rice offering with your dish. Just too much. Two, any chicken or meat you order with your dish? Get ready to play detective to find the pieces amidst your dish. Very very small portion of added meat. Three, spicy is not spicy. I get medium plus and have to ask for even more. Not even a sniffle. Overall it's a good spot. I always go back but these little things are my only gripes. This place is my very favorite restaurant in the Troy area and I stop in a couple times a month for lunch. Normally I eat a dish in the restaurant and order another to take home to have another day. One dish in particular that I love is called Chiang Mai Noodles - I order it with chicken and medium spice. For me it is a wonderful mix of rice noodles, onion, carrot, tomato, scrambled egg and sauce, topped with cashews. I have only found it at one other restaurant way back in the early 90s. I like it so much that I almost always ordered it on every visit. Now I mix it up more and like the curry dishes and the pineapple fried rice particularly well. There is no dish I have had there that I haven't enjoyed, however on occasion I have found the taste of a specific dish may vary somewhat from visit to visit - though not frequently. Thai is my favorite style of restaurant and I have visited a number in Troy, Sterling Heights, Rochester Hills and Dearborn. Bangkok Bistro Cafe is without a doubt my 'go to' place. Others have claimed it doesn't taste like 'true' Thai food and I don't know one way or another about that -- but, authentic or not I like it and will be back again and again. Also, I have NEVER noticed dirty dishes left on the tables or had any interactions with employees that caused me any concern. In fact I usually ask for special things - like extra rice, cashews or sauce for my take out dishes and have always been accommodated at no expense (even though I offered to pay extra). read more

I'm getting pretty sick of trying Thai restaurant after Thai restaurant only to be disappointed over and over again. It's like I go to the same restaurant every single time. Everyone has their own take on Thai, and it's always prepared to a different degree of shitty blandness depending on where you go. Bangkok Bistro is no exception. The service is fine. I called in my order and it was ready when they said it would be. The food wasn't good. It filled up my stomach, but it wasn't really enjoyable. I had Pad Thai with tofu, which is usually what I try first at a Thai restaurant. I figure it's the equivalent of going to Burger King and getting a Whopper. If they can't get the Pad Thai right, they are unlikely to get anything right. The Pad Thai with tofu was very very bland. It was as if there was no sauce on it at all. And since I ordered it with tofu, the tofu was flavorless. Maybe their other dishes are better. But don't come here for the Pad Thai. read more

This place is little known but one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the whole Metro Detroit area. They do not advertise their vegetarian options very well, but are very accomodating in substituting any protein with tofu. Our favorite is definitely the Chiang Rai Eggplant hands down - the best. The Waiwai noodles which are like thai style ramen noodles are also unexpectedly good. Our waitress is always very friendly and helpful. Prices are definitely on the higher end for a Thai restaurant, but it's also one of the cleanest and nicest. You can see their kitchen from a side window and they're very good at keeping it clean. So my rating is not a full five but definitely close. My son and I got pretty simply meals but they tasted great! We both got hot and sour soup with shrimp chips, soup was good but a little salty. I got pad Thai noodles extra hot no bean sprouts, it was very delicious but a little short on heat for me. I love very spicy food. My very picky kid ate shrimp fried rice and liked it a lot. Food came out steaming hot which is another plus and our waitress was sweet and filled our drinks periodically. I definitely recommend if you're in the area. Oh and they have huge portions! This is by far, the BEST THAI FOOD in Troy, MI area!!! If you live on the northern part of the real "O.C.", then this is the place for you! One thing that absolutely struck out to me is how homey it is! Very friendly and trendy!!! The owner of the restaurant wears many different hats. She comes around serving the food, checking up on you, and just your typical another "mother"! She's totally awesome and FANTABULOUS!!! Now, SHE is the one that greets you and makes sure that you're enjoying the experience. Can't comment on the service as I got a carryout order, but I got a medium spice with chicken and it was pretty spicy, even for me! Tons of flavor though and I had enough for 2 servings. The lunch price was $8.75 (don't know if it is more for dinner) and I saw a sign on the door that Monday, February 22, all day you can get chicken pad thai for $5. I don't know where the other reviewers have eaten Thai food before but I assure you this restaurant is no where need the genuine article. I travel to Thailand on a regular basis and the meal I had here was far from what I eat in Bangkok. I grant you that I only ordered two items however they were the two that any good Thai restaurant should be able to execute perfectly. To start with the Tom Yum broth just tasted salty and didn't have much flavor to it at all. That's like a burger joint serving you crappy fries and then you hoping for an excellent burger..... Never happens. That should have been my indication to jump ship but I went against my better judgement and hung around for the shrimp Penang. When my Penang did I arrive I saw something I have never seen before anywhere I have had this dish. There was so much green been pepper in the clay pot that it became the predominant item in the dish. I would have been much happier with a smaller portion size minus the Everest of green peppers but I guess the restaurant thought that wowing patrons with large looking portion sizes would make them overlook the taste component. News flash, it does not, at least not with me. The Penang had none off the signature flavor elements you would expect and all you taste is the basically lightly flavored coconut milk. As if all the aforementioned issues were not enough there is the price you get to pay for this Far East let down. These two "lunch items" alone set me back $22 with tip and all I drank was water. In my opinion I think you should pass on this place if you have a high bar for Thai food and if you already know people who go here maybe you can undertake an intervention and help them find new place where they can truly experience good Thai food which is remarkable when done right. read more

I ordered the curry noodle and got a pool of salty curry liquid with about 10 strands of thick rice noodles (see photo). The noodles taste like they were boiled just before al dente, then thrown into a salty curry. I drove out for during my lunch time for this carryout. If it weren't for the fact that I had to be back at work, I would've gone back and requested a refund. I've been eating curry noodle for years and this is the first time I got a dish this liquidy and salty. A hard no for me. I can't believe they served this. I've been to this Thai restaurant multiple times. It's my favorite place around and my "go-to" for Thai. I've never had a bad meal here. The Chai Ra Eggplant is awesome, so is the red snapper fish and the crab rangoon. The portions are pretty big, especially dinner size, so if you're not super hungry you could split a meal with someone. I also like their ice in the drinks. I know it sounds weird but the small cubed ice in the Thai iced tea or Coke makes it taste better for someone reason. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant to others. read more

Be careful the spicy scale is not calibrated to the traditional Thai spiciness scale. I can handle the spice but their medium felt more like a hot. Everytime my boyfriend would ask me where I'd like to go to dinner, I's quickly respond by saying "Thai". So, I heard good things about this place and decided it was time to test it out. I really like spice, so I got Pak Curry (medium). It was just okay. First, it wasn't really a thick, creamy, coconuty curry, but more like soup. Next, it wasn't that spicy. It was decent and I understand I might be a bit of a Thai snob, so I'm willing to give this place another shot. But, if this is the best Thai I can get my hands on in the area, I'll probably won't continue to respond with "Thai" when asked where I'd like to dine. I've ordered mostly take out from this restaurant and most has been decent, and their Tom yum soup is pretty good in my opinion. That said, I have experienced lack of flexibility with their offerings. There is a noodle dish named "Mee Thai" which from the description sounds wonderful. Even more wonderful if I could have it prepared with tamarind sauce instead of brown sauce, but twice in about 3 months I have asked for that variation and was told blatantly "no". The bigger issue is that this dish is supposed to contain chicken, beef, pork and shrimp, but alas - not one shrimp to be found. With all the thai restaurants around, I will probably be going elsewhere. The men's restroom and the area leading up to it in the back of the restaurant is pretty dirty and gross too. read more

The only reason for 4 stars is that the Pad Thai was just meh. There is a broad flavor/method spectrum, when it comes to Pad Thai though, and some people may love it. That being said, we will absolutely, positively be going back. The Chiang Rai Eggplant is one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten (and I've eaten a wide variety of things, in my life). The eggplant was somehow light and fluffy and caramelized, all at the same time. It was almost like they put an incredibly thin layer of tempura and deep fried it. I don't know - it was just absolutely incredible. The fresh rolls were well, fresh (and large). So often, the shrimp, chicken or cilantro are beyond their peak but these were wonderful. Don't be fooled by the fact that it's in a WalMart parking lot (we almost stayed away). It was wonderful. I love Thai food (as a matter of fact, we had our wedding reception at a Thai restaurant) and this was some of the best I've had. Do yourself a favor and check it out. read more

Friendly service, but I was a little put off by the overwhelming smell of subway bread (it's next door and the celing must be open to it or something, cause it's way over powering!) Me and my sister shared tofu Todd(to eat with our dinners, vegetable pad Thai, and pineapple fried rice. First, presentation was nice and we got HUGE portions! The tofu Todd (deep fried bean curd) was okay..it was too wet in the middle for my tastes-I like when my tofu Todd is more dry and crispier. We loved the fried rice, it was delicious, fresh tasting, and so flavorful! The pad Thai was good and sweet, but lacking some flavor. I've had better tbh. We got mild (which is my safe route because mild at other pad Thai places I go to are always spicy enough!) so if you like spicy, I would suggest getting a higher level. Once we were settled, we were expecting the traditional Thai mini soup but NONE was given. When asked the counter guy said "it is only given for lunch". Then "what we are eating at 2PM is not lunch?"
