They have went from being reliable and on time and generally a good taxi firm, to being unreliable. Even on quiet weekday evenings it is a long wait for an available taxi (at least 45 minutes) and quite often a lot longer at weekends. Last night (Sunday) was the last straw for me and I resorted to unusual tactics to get home. I ordered home delivery from the Chinese takeaway beside the taxi office and got the delivery driver to take me home! What can I say, I was hungry and wanted to get home. So, Kare Cabs have fallen from Grace in my eyes and I will be reluctant to use them anytime soon.

There offices are located in a convenient location on Bangor's High Street, a matter of yards away from the pubs and clubs. After a sober night on the town I met my sister and her friend and one thing was on the agenda, to get out of Bangor before the pubs and clubs kicked out because things tend to get a bit raucous. So we headed for Kare Cabs, for a start they didn't have an office and we had to talk through a steel door over an intercom. This was at the operators own leisure by the way. When we finally got to speak to someone we were told that we would have to wait 30 minutes for a taxi home. The thing about taxi's is that if they outline clear expectations to their clients then customers will not get disappointed. On this occasion Kare Cabs promised 30 minutes but we waited around 50 minutes. This did not bother me too much as the entertainment pouring out of Bangor's pubs was enough to keep me distracted but it seemed that they were serving clients out of turn because others offered more lucrative fares. On the positive side I have to compliment the driver as he made an unscheduled stop on our trip home and charged us the small fee of £6 for a two stop journey. I suppose to be fair to the company it was a busy Saturday night in Bangor and it is not always easy to control night time revellers. So on this occasion I am going to go easy on Kar Cabs and give them 3 stars.

I think I even knew the Premier Taxi number before my home phone number. 4...5..6...7...8...1..Job done, taxi booked! Because of this simple number I have probably used this taxi company the most. I have to say that I have never really had a major problem with Premier. Of course they do the usual thing that taxi companies do when the taxi is late, you know? It generally goes a bit like this: Me: "Hi, I ordered a taxi for 5 minutes ago and it still hasn't arrived?!" Premier: "Hold on one wee minute love.............(Long pause).......Ok darling, he is just turning into your street now!" Everyone knows that "turning into your street now" means that the taxi will at least be another 5 minutes, I think its taxi language but you should consult your phrasebook for confirmation. Anyway, Premier is good apart from the above but that is to be expected when you have a number that everyone can remember.

Essentially what you want from a taxi companty is that when you ring them they pick up, they send you the taxi at the time they say they will and that you aren't overcharged. Bangor Cabs does all this with the minimum of fuss. Taxis in general are getting quite expensive in Bangor but it would be unfair to single out this company for that rather annoying trend.

This is certainly the case with North Down Cabs, they have a really good reputation in Bangor and I would recommend them to anyone really. Also, the office stays open quite late and you can usually get a taxi quite quickly even late at night. The decor in the office is exactly what you expect but its clean and tidy and there is rarely if ever any trouble, which isn't always the case in Bangor taxi offices.

The train services are ok, but just about. They are massively overpriced, with a return to Belfast costing over £7 and that is just ridiculous. I get a student pass and that comes to £6.80 for a day return. In the winter months there are nearly constant delays and there is never any information given to help you out or let you know what is going on. That and on a quick 30minute journey it is not uncommon to have your ticket checked 3 or 4 times, including at both ends of the station. Ridiculous and an embarassment compared to public transport anywhere else I have ever been in the world.

But all that is in the past because in 2001 Bangor opened a brand new Bus and Rail Centre, it even sounds less intimidating. The station now resembles a water park with its ultra marine blue colour schemes and curvaceous roof. Every day I begin my journey to Belfast at Bangor bus station, or should I say rail centre. It boasts a coffee shop, newsagents and booking office which is handy as my 7am routine includes buying a coffee, newspaper and a single visa transaction. That visa transaction always helps to wake me up. A return to Great Victoria street is 7.20 which is outrageous considering the short distance. Despite the accessibility and personality of Bangor's bus stations it does little to console me when I tot up my monthly travel bill.

The whole process was really easy - we were at the bottom of High Street and they said they'd meet us at Wolsey's to avoid us walking to the their offices. The driver was polite and well mannered and he didn't mind doing multiple drop offs around Belfast - he did go a strange way to Belfast but I think it worked out the same. Overall a good service at a decent price - no complaints here.

I have been in the office plenty of times and always found this place a bit of a port in the storm after a big-ish night out in Bangor. The office is located at the top of high street which means that it is near all the pubs and clubs in Bangor but not so close that you get the place rammed full of drunkards and people fighting like mad men and women. The staff are friendly and you will never have to wait too long for a taxi in here. Its a properly good wee taxi office and all the taxi drivers I have experienced have been dead on and you can usually have the kinda chat you can expect from a taxi driver. The prices are pretty standard for Bangor to be honest, that is to say, it costs a lot to get a taxi.

I know they're not two words usually associated with stations (and don't worry, I don't use them often), but they certainly fit the bill for the first integrated bus and train station in Northern Ireland. With its split-level building designed to make life a wee bit easier by separating the bus section (lower level) from the rail area (upper level), as well as a cafe, a newsagents and seating areas, Bangor Station is well laid out and easy to use. The bus service (provided by Ulsterbus) connects Bangor with the likes of Belfast, Newtownards and Donaghadee, as well supplying Bangor with its very own town service. The rail service (provided by NI Railways) links Bangor with Belfast Central, and then carries on to from here to Portadown. Passengers can easily alight at Central and switch to the Enterprise to Dublin, or indeed change for the likes of Coleraine, Portrush, Carrickfergus and Londonderry. Very handy indeed. All in all, Bangor Station is first class and certainly up there with the top stations in Northern Ireland. Ps. Hello to Mr Friendly Ticket Man, who didn't mind my stupidity when I forgot to show him my train ticket on the way out of the station. Ever so nice, he was.
