Just took my first yoga class here today, and I did not enjoy it unfortunately. Im very familiar with heat and humidity in a hot yoga class but today it was really too much. I could see others uncomfortable as well. Within 10 minutes, all of our clothes were soaked. I was so stressed by the heat/humidity I couldnt enjoy or focus on my practice. After class some other students and I let the instructor know the heat was too much, much more than a typical hot yoga class. Unfortunately our class went over by almost 10 minutes and as I was heading to my car, I already saw the cop clipping the violation ticket, I would've appreciated if we ended the class on time since there's meter parking only. read more

Took my first class here with Mark. A couple of notes here. Also, if you have a few minutes, I recommend scanning their IG page to get an idea of what you're in for. 1. The class gets very, very hot, between 90-95 degrees F. For the hour of power class, the sequence is fast-paced. At one point, I ended up skipping every other chatarunga in order to keep up (sorry, Mark). Also, not many breaks built in so I took plenty of self-imposed breaks. We hit a lot of different poses in that one hour. I wasn't bored, that's for sure. Panting and dripping sweat and conscious of the giant puddle I was birthing, but not bored. I loved the focus on some of the lesser-done moves, like crow. (Seriously, every yoga class is going to do bridge. Also, petition to banish ab work from all yoga sequences. Signed, someone who hates bicycles with a fiery passion.) Stinky foot smell scale: 7/10. I got used to it after a while, though. 2. Mark is a beloved teacher judging on how full the class was and how many regulars there seemed to be. And he was truly awesome. One of the best, clearest yoga teachers I've ever taken, who would do the moves with us as he went along. I noticed halfway through that he wasn't using music and seriously, that made such a difference. I felt like I could concentrate on what he was saying and what I was doing without getting caught up in whatever song was playing. That said, he does hands-on assists (no heads-up is given at the beginning of class so this is me giving it). Some people (including me) don't mind it - in fact, I'm giving an apology in advance for how soggy I was; others might find it distracting or intrusive. Granted, this isn't specific to this one teacher. If you go on the Baptiste Power IG, hands-on assists is listed as one of the core features of their practice. I suppose it's up to each individual person to weigh that and decide if maybe another studio feels right for them. 3. Studio is nice and spacious with windows (I hate the windowless interior ones that make you feel like you're in a basement, looking at you, CPY). It gets crowded AND there's definitely a strategy to picking a spot, hence why it would behoove you to get there early. It seems like the ends of the room (closest to the door and windows) are the coolest, while the center and closer to the front get the hottest (since you're under the row of lights overhead and also right in the instructor's line of sight). I didn't cotton on to this quickly enough and by the time I had gotten myself set up, it was too late. Front and center and a literal puddle by the second sequence. Also: no mirrors. On bad body image days, I appreciate that, though sometimes catching sight of myself in a bind or doing eagle gives me a confidence boost. 4. Parking: metered street options, plus a lot right across the street. The studio is in a bustling part of Brookline, with lots of restaurants and cafes nearby. read more

No words to describe how fucking PUMPED I am that Brandon C. finally came back to his roots to teach at this studio. The space is gorgeous, they are doing 30 days of unlimited yoga for your first month, and Brandon teaches on the weekend (Fri and Sun). I wish he taught the daily 5:45pm and every single class on SAT and SUN, but for now this will do! He is honestly the most inspiring, interesting, REAL TEACHER out there in the entire Boston and MA area. I am so pumped to be able to be his student again. I've been practicing Baptiste for 14 years. What I love about it (other than the amazing heat) is the free style nature. All of my teachers have always encouraged me to do what my body needs. Unfortunately this studio is ego driven - instructors get insulted if you don't do EVERYTHING as they want. If you leave to get some air, they admonish you. If you need something else beyond what they want, they call you out. If I want that military style, I can go to ashtanga or Bikram. I do still enjoy Mark's class thus the 3 stars. read more

This studio is unlike any other in the world. This is the first yoga studio I ever want to. After falling in love with the practice here, I've since sought out what feels like every yoga studio from New York to California...and there is no place on earth like Baptiste Power Yoga. This practice must be experienced physically to be fully understood. This yoga is physical, challenging, and an insanely in-depth work out. There's also something lovely about the "whole-body" methodology here. Say your interest in yoga is piqued by one particular, maybe surface level goal - like better biceps, a flatter stomach, a general feeling of relaxation, or some feeling that yoga will just be good for you. Man, you will find so much more than that! This practice, will touch everything from the soles of your feet, to the back of your hamstrings, to the tension in your shoulders, to the clearing of the anxiety in your mind. This exercise routine builds muscle and core strength, makes you more flexible, functions as a self-massage, and seems to naturally compel you to eat foods that are more delicious and more healthy and light..... At the same time (or on other, different occasions) it can be very relaxing and a more spiritual experience, or simply a place to clear the mind. The best part of BPYI, is its accessibility. The method of the instruction is always comfortable to all, as it encourages everyone to practice in a manner that feels most comfortable but most honestly challenging for them that day. I feel absolutely no "competition" here, and only compare myself to others if they are somehow inspiring, or If I am every so often, in child's pose and happen to notice someone's side crow or something like that and am in a brief moment of awe. There is a super welcoming community vibe here. Brandon and Naima are totally awesome. The teachers are all terrific and I look forward to their classes for different reasons. I love this studio! I am so thankful that this studio repopened. Baptiste power yoga has helped me through many challenging times in my life and I can't possibly say enough good things in this one review. It is a physical practice, but accessible for everyone. As a student of Baptiste Yoga since Baron was teaching daily at the Cambridge studio in the early 2000s, I have watched the Baptiste Yoga scene shift away from its roots over the years. I can't say how excited I am that Brandon and Naima, who've been keeping it real at their Northampton studio Shiva Shakti, are bringing back the magic and integrity of the real Baptiste practice to where it all began with their Brookline studio! To start on a positive note, I really enjoyed Coeli's class and would highly recommend her as an instructor. He class is very healing, mindful, and seriously feels like a meditation. She is encouraging and will support students to find variations that work for them. I also like that she starts off a little slower then some of the other instructors, whose classes I have felt more rushed. I wish I could say the same for the owners (Naima and Brandon) whose classes have made my experience at Baptise disappointing. I have found them condescending, and not the supportive and encouraging type of instructors I have usually had when practicing yoga (ex. if you are feeling overwhelmingly hot, I think its important to listen to your body and leave the room if you need to and drink water to rehydrate at any point in the class). Considering the numerous negative reviews they have received at their studio in North Hampton on similar complaints I have to their instructing styles, I think they need to look inward and change their approach of interacting with their students to create a more supportive, embracing environment. I am going to finish my 30 days at Baptise and continue going to both Coeli and Rachel's classes, but I am leaving this review so that the owners can develop a different approach of interacting with their students. Yoga is your own practice with the instructor as a "guide" and I think if you want to spread your branches in tree pose or use your hand instead of a strap in a pose, you should be able to do this, and the multiple classes I took with the owners, I was scolded for doing just that. read more
