Although, it's not the place for giants as there are low ceilings or if you're not good stairs as it's a bit like the Burrow from Harry Potter. The upstairs rooms on the top floor are deluxe double beds, with an ensuite, a large old fashioned bathtub, tv and complimentary tea and coffee. If you prefer a shower, the rooms located in the courtyard near the pub are the one for you. Make sure to take advantage of the barn style pub and restaurant, which serve up good quality seasonal food at reasonably prices if you're not after the usual pub grub. I enjoyed a classic beef burger which hit the spot and the tasting plate, accompanied by local beer and cider. For breakfast, there is proper cafe quality coffee and tea is by UK brand teapigs. There is a range of hot and continental options. I had the eggs royale, which exceeded my expectation of hotel breakfasts. After researching and sussing out a few places to stay, this one seemed the best, a real small town gem. I'll definitely be back!

The dining area is on two levels above the street level. The service is very friendly and prompt. Food is imaginative, delicious, but somewhat lacking in the oomph factor. The sautéed livers with pancetta on brioche was the winner among the appetisers. The server informed us that they were out of salmon and goats cheese, so two of the five appetisers were unavailable. The lamb with the neck croquette was well cooked, flavoured, but somehow didn't hit the spot. The rump was a tad dry. Probably just the wrong day. Well done on the dessert. Both the date pudding (they ran out of figs which were an addition to this one) and the ginger cheesecake, were very done. Great place to stop by if you're in the Mendip area.

I often find that you cannot judge a pub by its exterior. We were pleasantly surprised this afternoon. I don't know who put the spaniel by the door, but it was the perfect welcome! :) Welcome at the bar, not crowded but very cosy with a lovely open fire. We were guided to a lovely table by the fire which was perfect. We had a lovely lunch too. My wild boar sausages with leek and herbs were fantastic, all meat and no filler I could detect. The mash was yummy and the gravy. The veggies were water logged but I don't hold that against them. (my meal was less than £9.) My companion ate ham, egg and chips and it looked good. The puds that arrived at the table next door looked pretty good and were appreciated. Hobgoblin on tap, Butcombe bitter amongst others. Put it this way, if this pub was in London they'd be queuing round the block to get in every night. The actual building is 17thC and there's been a pub on site for over three hundred years now. In it's latest incarnation (of must be getting on for twenty years or so now) it's also known as Milk Street Brewery. Yup, it's got it's own brewery out back - and the beers are a small but select range of utterly delicious ales. The most famous is the aptly named 'Beer' beer, and Funky Money, also Zig-Zag are highly reccomended too. I can't wait to try this season's new brew 'Bobbled', launching on 1st December. I don't know how they manage to pack in so much. There are music nights, quiz nights, 'event' nights, and a children-welcome policy of usually up top about 9pm. There's even a small but delightful beer-garden out back for smokers. Buy the t-shirt and drink the pint - and if you catch Sausage Sunday you'll be glad you did. My best mate's in-laws stayed there recently and had a lovely room in the back annex (nice and high up, not right over the bar) that was overlooking the River. The charm of this place is that whilst most of the other Market Place buildings now have the georgian facades that were orginal to their re-vamp back a few hundred years ago, the Blue Boar retains it's original 17thC facade. It's always good for pub-grub, I've enjoyed many a tasy, hearty meal in there. No fuss or fancies just good decent pub nosh. You can get a decent pint of ale there, and if putting the world to rights isn't your thing then there's an excellent juke-box to listen to and a large pool table.

We stayed there previously, about 5 years ago and nothing had changed although the rooms had obviously had a bit of TLC, very clean and comfortable with plenty of tea and coffee in the room, we only need basic as the room is only somewhere to sleep after being out for the day and evening. we went out for a chinese meal in the town and a bit of a wander and then it was back to the Blue Boar for a bit of light entertainment (well Karaoke), I even had a couple of songs myself. it is a great atmosphere in this pub and we will definately be visiting Frome again and there's only one place to stay as far as I'm concerned and that the Blue Boar. But inside, it's a mind-boggling retro example of lino and formica, and unmodernised since the 70's. Still, it's a locals local and it's clientele are loyal. They do a good pint of cider there, at a very reasonable cost, if that's your fancy. No beer garden unfortunately so smokers are obliged to stand right out on the narrow roadway. But if you want an unusual taste of Frome-life tradition, then stop by for a pint!

What I loved most of all was the large number of dogs in attendance, making this a true country pub (I know, I should venture out of London more often ...). The house wine was excellent and they had a good choice of beers, as you'd expect. I will make sure to find an excuse to return for a proper visit soon.
