Located in Capitol Hill, parking is mostly on the street, which can be challenging during the busy peak hours of late afternoon and evening. I came on a Monday evening, so parking wasn't too bad. Street parked about two blocks from Bar Cotto. It is spacious when you walk into Bar Cotto, with seats at the bar or tables. I was with a party of three, so we were seated quickly since there weren't many people dining there at that time. The ambiance was very chill, with music that wasn't played too loud, and the lights were warm, hovering over individual tables. Much of the light came naturally from the large window facing the street. When the sun sets, the lighting changes to turn on a warmer glow that can make the dining experience pleasant for couples enjoying a nice meal there. Dining here is suitable for groups of 2-8. Regarding food, we ordered two pizzas and a side for a party of three. We ordered the Carbonara, the Prosciutto Funghi, and the Brussels sprouts as an appetizer for the pizza. Everything tasted so good! Since the pizzas were large and filling, this was enough food for three people. For drinks, I ordered the Twilight in Parma, which is a great cocktail for those who enjoy a bit of a sweeter drink. The service was excellent! It's not often you find a happy hour on a Friday, but this place offers it every day from 5-6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close, with happy hour available throughout the restaurant Sunday-Thursday and bar only on Friday and Saturday! Unfortunately, as we were ordering, the staff informed us that since we didn't sit at the bar, we wouldn't be eligible for the happy hour prices. Had we known this ahead of time, we would've definitely sat at the bar, but it wasn't mentioned when we were seated, which was a bit disappointing. Despite this, the food was great. We started with the meatballs, which were excellent and came with two hearty pieces. The bolognese was decent, but nothing special. The pepperoni pizza, however, was fantastic - perfectly made. The sauce and pineapple tasted a little too sour, not fresh. The cheese was alright. I left the restaurant with a stomach ache. If you are celiac I definitely advise not coming here. I had called earlier asking about cross contamination, and the person on the phone assured me everything was celiac safe. Their happy hour is great! My favorite was the Aperol Spritz. I think this is their most popular drink and I can definitely see why. Huge wine glass filled with a very citrus-y bubbly well-balanced drink on a hot summer day. Their other drinks were solid too but this one blew me and my friend away. Warning that their vesper martini is quite strong! Food was decent (a good deal for the price!). The Rigagoni on the menu (did they mean to say Rigatoni?) was a good-sized meal for one. Everything was very good and I felt like the portions were more than enough for two people, especially the pizza which was huge! Used to love this place but after last night, I definitely need to reconsider. Friend was in town visiting so I thought I'd take him to Bar Cotto. What a mistake. There was a wait when we arrived. That wasn't a problem. The disorganization was. The poor wounded puppy greeting guests was clearly overwhelmed. Not sure if he was just new/untrained/unfamiliar with their systems or if there was just an intellectual issue with him but it made for a bit of an awkward and unpleasant waiting experience for the people jammed in the corner. And he was none the wiser to realize this. Drinks and appetizer were fine and each of us ordered a pizza. Mine came out. It was just ok. It was very undercooked and soggy in the middle but we were starving. Five minutes later, we inquired where my friend's pizza was and the bar tender said it would be another five or so minutes. That was surprising so I asked if that was their new practice: to bring out people's entrees at staggered times. Some restaurants do that. He was clearly upset by this question. And responded: "dude, come on." Given the price point and ambience of Bar Cotto I was surprised by this response. Whatever happened to assuming best intentions? Perhaps the owners should remind their bar tender that their restaurant is supposed to be an upscale restaurant providing some service. Defensive quips aren't necessary. About five minutes later the bar tender came over to say that they had burned my friend's pizza and were starting over. He said it would be free but we would have to wait, probably another 15 or so minutes. We didn't want to so he threw down the check - offering no apology and certainly offering nothing to make up for this. While the restaurant was full when we arrived it was less than half full when this happened. The two "cooks" at the pizza oven were flirting with each other the entire time and it's my guess that is why the pizza was burned and the timing was off. Regardless, they shouldn't be empty at 9:00 on a Saturday night in Cap Hill, but now I know why they were. We left and went elsewhere to get my friend food and encountered crowds everywhere we went. I don't think I need to go there again, which is a shame, because Bar Cotto used to be great. At least it was when their employees cared enough to show it. read more

Very small inside and a bit confusing on where to wait/check in. We put our name down and the "host" said about 30-40 minutes. After everyone else was seated, we figured we'd be sat soon but when deciding to wait inside instead of outside the same "host" acted like he had never seen us before. Then asked how many people in our party... Once we were finally seated by the bartender it was very unclear who our server was. About 3/4 different workers were supporting with our table. The person who took or order didn't write it down since he was holding dirty dishes from another table. Sadly, he got our order wrong and I was already too bothered to ask to switch it/wait longer. I feel I would've had more patience if parties behind us weren't sat before us. It felt a bit frustrating since I chose this restaurant for my birthday dinner. Caesar salad had really fresh romaine but was missing some acidity - maybe needed a smidge more dressing or just a lemon wedge tossed in or something. Meatballs had REALLY good flavor, but could have used the tiniest bit more sauce, like maybe a tablespoon more would've been perfect. Margherita pizza arrived cold w/ congealed toppings, but 10 mins in the oven at 350 deg solved the problem. I don't know that I feel the need to do the Caesar salad or Margherita pizza again, but the meatballs are a can't-miss. Maybe ask for a little cup of extra sauce on the side. read more
