I went to dinner with my brother who has a severe food allergy. This information was shared with the waitress, who checked ingredients on the bread. When I ordered an appetizer for the table, I requested she make sure it was egg free. She agreed. When a different server delivered it to our table, there was a fried egg on top. This was obviously very concerning, as it was literally the exact opposite of what we needed. When our waitress eventually returned to the table, I informed her of what happened and she got us a replacement. That was the main problem, and the reason I'm writing the review, but overall service was not great, the food was fine, and the restaurant didn't really do anything to correct for the error they made - we were still charged for the appetizer. I don't recommend going if you have food allergies, though the 50% bottles of wine on Sundays is a good deal. read more

We came in as a group of 10 for boozy brunch on Sunday and it did not disappoint! The mimosas are pre-made but still delicious and strong. I ordered some poached eggs as part of the $24 special and though the kitchen forgot to add in my smoked salmon, the waitress was very apologetic and gave it to me on the side. This place hit the spot! I came in later after work and snagged a seat at the bar...the bartender was very friendly and helpful! The bread is amazing...when they brought it out I thought it looked like a lot but I honestly could have eaten it all night. I also ordered a glass of white wine and the cacio e pepe. The pasta was great and you could tell that it was completely made by scratch! It was ok. We got there during happy hour, but all that meant was half price appetizers and certain wines. The appetizers were more than a little over priced, but half price did make them a deal. The meatball appetizer was good, but not great. She really liked her beet salad though. The entrees were different, and they were good, but if I'm going to have Italian, and have to pay for all those carbs in the gym, I really want it to be much better. The food was just Bland Bland Bland Bland Bland... We had to ask for salt and pepper shaker. It really was disappointing. The quality of the food was fine; it was just that they didn't do enough to create interesting flavors. What they put in seemed good but just not enough of anything, not enough herbs, not enough spices, not enough salt, not enough flavor... the tiramisu came out as a frozen block. The sauce for the Cacio e Pepe was watery and didn't taste like much. Additionally, our server was unfriendly and condescending. I had asked if the sauce was typically like that and she grabbed the plate and said she'd have it re-tossed. She brought it back with the same watery sauce but with a lot of Parmesan on top, which I guess helped. Bar Roma had some hits and misses the night we went. The Maiale meatballs were amazing and by far my favorite dish of the evening. They had the perfect amount of spice and flavoring. In my opinion if didn't need the bacon strip, as it didn't really add anything to the dish, but it didn't hurt it either. We also very much enjoyed the warm bread pudding for dessert; it was rich and delicious. I could have easily eaten two of those! There was a great selection of wines by the bottle at affordable prices. Sadly, I was not impressed by pastas. The Cacio e Pepe was not as creamy or peppery as others I have had, but I did like it more than the Pappardelle. The Pappardelle's sauce was too runny for my liking and it was somewhat bland. Bar Roma is absolutely beautiful on the inside and we were not rushed during our meal, which I appreciated. Our server was nice, but did have to double check what we ordered both for our main dishes and dessert. (Although I would prefer he did that over putting in the incorrect order) I would give Bar Roma another shot, but probably skip the pastas and try more of the appetizers/salads. read more

I love my neighborhood and I live in Andersonville. I alway support both Andersonville and Ravenswood. We invited a lot of our friends from different neighbors areas of Chicago to support local businesses for the Andersonville taste. I'm so embarrassed that I did that now. We took the Spoon route and part of that route was Bar Roma. I have been there as customers many times. But, this time was terrible. Tom the manager made everyone in my group felt uncomfortable. He called people names in the line because he stressed out and couldn't control himself. He made some sign with his hands to many people. After all that, he still came to us to be rude and were at the sidewalk to go to hop leaf. He was the most rude person ever, unwelcome human been and stressful person working on the industry. I'm writhing this to bring an awareness but I will also write to the Andersonville chamber of commerce. If Bar Roma wants to be part of the test, I will support it. But, they should consider whether they want to me in the taste next year. If so, don't put managers in charge like Tom. It creates a bad experience for everyone. read more

Simply stated, the food is way overpriced. I ordered the Parmigiana di Melanzane(eggplant parmesan) for $25.20, and although decent in flavor, it certainly wasn't the best eggplant parmesan I ever had, but probably was the most expensive. They even charged an additional $1.80 for extra bread! Not all of the eggplant was cooked properly, as there were a few pieces that were too hard to cut with a knife. It's funny another review referenced Chef Boyardee, because that's exactly my take. Perhaps tomato based sauces aren't their specialty. I will say each dish was plated beautifully. I ordered the Fristo Misto, Insalata di Misticanza and the Pappadelle. The pasta and service were both disappointing, the salad and seafood were really good. I occasionally make the mistake of dining near closing time. ..never a great idea. I suspect my waiter had a long day and was ready to go home. We certainly didn't feel welcomed. Love this place. It's esthetically pleasing and the happy hour is quite hoppin. The food here is just ok though. It doesn't really pop to me as far as flavors. We had the fried artichokes which were nice, and crispy and the aioli they serve with it is scrumptious. We also shared the fried frito (yeah we were on a roll )appetizer of calamari, shrimp, and smelt. I think if you've never had smelt like myself you probably don't want to. I digress anywho we also had the fettuccine with squid ink and all the seafood in a pomedero sauce. Not bad but just ok. All in all I think they are famous for their meatballs. Yes yes and yes! First of foremost, you want to come during Happy Hour which starts at 5pm. This is where you want to be because their appetizers are half off which is a huge price difference from their dinner menu. You also want that mini carafe of wine which equals out to be close to 2 drinks for 6 bucks!!! What you want to order is everything! Seriously. Get that burrata which is the best I've had, get the meat and cheese plate which is enough for 3 people, get a salad because you wanna be healthy and it's just delicious (I had one with peaches which I was crazy about so sub it with a caprese) and don't you dare leave without getting the meatballs topped with homemade ricotta! We've done both brunch and dinner at this place, and it's always been stellar! Tuesdays are a great day to go, featuring a 3-course meal option, a great way to taste a number of dishes. Also, brunch is hopping, featuring a must-have bottomless mimosa special and eggs benedicts that come out perfect. I felt inclined to give a rave review and a shout out for going above and beyond - we were a group of 12 and they accommodated us beautifully. Furthermore, we had left our credit card in the check presenter and the server/management was kind enough to do the work of seeing what number was attached to our reservation. Also, with the introduction of the Impossible meatball, your veggie-minded friends can now participate in the meatball festivities! I entered to a smiling host and a full bar, and ordered a drink from a welcoming and attentive bartender. Several kinds of cocktail options led me to a new choice of Rum on the rocks, and then my group got a table. We ordered every meatball except the Impossible, due to the carnivorous nature of the group who lauded the notion, and I found that while the chicken held no place in my palette, the spicy pork is one I'd readily go back for. I then ordered the ox tail, YUM. My plate was so clean when I was done the server asked if I was still hungry, ha! (In fact I was so full I literally had to stretch when I stood up.) My two friends took me here to celebrate my birthday last month. There's a bar area near the entrance where they grabbed a drink before my arrival. We were warmly greeted then seated promptly for our reservation. We followed the host to the other room and were seated at a corner table near the windows. The interior space had nice decor and a cool ambiance. I was really excited to try out the Cacio e Pepe dish, my favorite Italian pasta entree ever. First we started with an order of the Caprese off their specials for the day, the Manzo meatballs, and the Suppli Primavera or Saffron Risotti croquettes. The caprese was my favorite of the three. The other two dishes were just okay. For dinner, I had the Cacio. I was disappointed since it was mostly pepper and not much cheese - I was expecting a cheesier sauce. The pasta was cooked okay. My friend had the Braciola de Maile pork chop dish, which was pretty moist. My other friend had the special pumpkin pasta dish which was alright. We split a side order of the Panella-Crispy Chickpea Fries which were not crispy at all. For dessert we tried the Crema Buciata hazelnut custard. It was different and I'm glad I tried it, but maybe next time I'll try the Tiramisu for comparisons other Italian places. The cocktails did standout and I thoroughly enjoyed both the Tommaso Collins and the Fig N Honey. The service was also great! I just wish the food was just as great not just a-okay. read more

I've been here twice the first time was for dinner and the second time was for brunch. Both times I've had a good experience. Yesterday for brunch with had a big group and our server was very attentive and friendly. $25 Sparkling Bubbly Mimosa brunch is a good deal especially for big groups. It's unlimited Mimosas, I ordered a Bloody Mary to start and it tasted pretty good and as for my meal I got the frittata. After years of wanting to go, I finally made it to Bar Roma during Andersonville's Restaurant Week back in March. It was the first time for the other two members of my party as well. I arrived first and was greeted by one of the hostesses. After being told that my table wasn't ready (I was early), I was shown an area by the bar in which I could wait. They seem to have quite a few hosts, and more than one of them made sure that I had been addressed/helped, which I appreciated. A short while later I was shown my table and later joined by the rest of my party. Our sever, Julie, was very friendly as was the other staff we encountered. The restaurant seemed very busy, but the staff seemed very attentive and quick to react to anyone's, well at least our, needs. I remember looking up at one point to see if I could find someone to ask a question and one of the hostesses was by our table in an instant. We never had to wait for water or too long for our food despite the level of activity in the restaurant. I ordered the pre-fix menu and Julie (and the chef) were very accommodating to a substitution I requested due to a food allergy. Often, when you have something substituted, you seem to get less, but in this case, it seemed like they gave me more than what my companions had in their meals! I had their basic "insalata", hand rolled cacao e pepe ravioli (with chicken for me), chicken parmesan, and bread pudding with gelato for dessert. Again, it was Restaurant Week so the portions were small as expected, but everything was very tasty. Between the great service and food, I definitely look forward to another visit. It was upscale food and service without the upscale stuffy atmosphere. I see why they've been in the area so long. read more

We have had the pleasure of going to Bar Roma a couple of times now, since they opened last month, and we love this place! The food is amazing, and the service is great! We actually went our first time, on opening night, and service was spot on! In many cases, opening night for a restaurant can be a little off, not here, you would have never known they just opened their doors mere hours ago! The last time we were there, which was NYE, after having an unpleasant experience at another establishment, we were looking for dessert, decided to go back to Bar Roma, and we were so happy we did! We wished we would have had NYE dinner there instead! Again, the service and food was great! I came here the other night with a girlfriend and we had a nice time. The food was okay- I had high hopes for the meatballs after reading about them and they were good just not ya know, the best meatballs I've ever had. I know it's new but the whole seating process was just confusing. They wouldn't seat us in the main dining room despite there being several open tables because it was "reservation only". Outside their "reservation only" dining room they have bar seating and then communal hi-tops. The bar was full-ish and the hostess was awkward about seating us at the hi-tops. We asked if we could sit at the hi-tops and she recommended we wait for the bar seating...huh? We ended up siting at the hi-tops and as far as a seating experience it was fine. On top of the meatballs we had butternut squash soup ($7) which was tasty but pricey for the portion size. We also split the special pasta which basically had the ground up meatballs on top so I kind of wish we had tried something different. The drinks were okay..I was informed they ran out of Old Fashiond's after I ordered one so I assume this is just a new thing that they'll work out. Overall a solid addition to the neighborhood. I hope to come back once they've worked out some of the kinks but certainly wasn't the best first impression but I'm sure I'll give them another try at some point. read more

From the unnecessary use of tuna as a placeholder on a caesar salad . To the pappardelle my favorite pasta taken out of its beauty . I wouldnt mind if he were the "jolly" drinker, but he was very short with us and a little rude with the other patrons. Dont get me wrong, I've had my fair share of gruff bartenders, but this didn't seem like the place for it. They've also added a decidely tacky To-Go cooler, right next to the front door! Its not cute. Why not put that thing behind scenes?? The space was less cozy with it there for certain! The service is probably fine, I sat at the bar with my gals. I was able to get a last-minute reservation on Christmas Eve in the dining room the day before. All the staff was very nice and welcoming. Both dishes we ordered were perfection.
