Today, after a morning of shopping, I decided to have lunch at the Nordstrom Café in Century City. I usually dine at the Grove location, where I've always had pleasant experiences, so I expected a similar level of service. I initially sat at the bar, but despite being there for several minutes, I wasn't greeted or acknowledged by the bartender. I understand that staff can be busy, and I wasn't expecting immediate service. However, a simple, "I'll be with you shortly," or even a quick acknowledgment would have been appreciated. Instead, I was completely ignored. Thinking perhaps the bartender was only responsible for preparing drinks and not taking orders, I got up and went to the hostess stand. The host was kind, promptly seated me, and was seated in a booth. Moments later, I watched two Caucasian women sit down at the bar. They were immediately greeted, given menus, and attended to without delay. Seeing that stark difference in how we were treated was incredibly disappointing. At that point, I no longer felt welcome. I felt embarrassed, overlooked, and, unfortunately, discriminated against. Rather than continue waiting in an environment where I didn't feel valued, I chose to leave. I believe every guest deserves to be acknowledged and treated with the same courtesy and respect, regardless of their race. As an African American woman, it was difficult not to notice the contrast between how I was treated and how the next guests were welcomed. I chose to spend my money elsewhere, where I felt my business would be appreciated. I love it here. Casual vibes but great food. It's never crowded and food is top notch. My favorite entrées are the tomato soup with crostini (order extra and thank me later!) and the chicken tacos. They used to have a great Santa Fe chicken sandwich. I hear the turkey sandwiches are bomb! service is always good and the atmosphere is clean and modern. Honestly I didn't even realize this spot was called Bar Verde. I always call the restaurant inside the Nordstrom, "the Nordstrom Cafe," but apparently that's just the cafe portion that's on the ground floor. Anyways, always a solid staple for lunch to pop into when you're shopping at the mall. Much better than any of the fast food spots, without the 3 hr wait for Din Thai Fung. They have a super cute outdoor seating area which I recommend for nice weather days and the service was good. I usually get the BLTA and my friend loves their tomato soup and fries. Food is quite good, but also not earth shattering. A good go to spot on your shopping days but I wouldn't come here just to eat. Oh my. Though it's been a couple of years since originally discovering and loving Bar Verde, I was today reminded why I have not been back lately. Simply put, there's a steady decline in food quality. Though the room is relaxing and has a nice chill vibe to it, that's not enough. I recall fantastic lunches, a killer brunch once, and a couple of lovely dinners in years past. A couple of years ago, a lunch I had there was less than stellar. Today's lunch was a step below that. The French Dip has little flavor. Though the meat is ok (served at a quirky combination of medium rare and medium well), it's a forgettable sandwich. The parmesan baguette tastes warmed over and a little crumbly, the 'sharp' white cheddar is super dull, and the au jus....ugh. Imagine a store-bought beef stock with some thyme/tarragon flavorful additive. Really. You might fare better to take the second half of the sandwich home, and add a Dijon mustard to it. I speak from experience. Also, the fries were even less impressive. Mushy, re-warmed shoestrings that do not taste. Not even the Heinz ketchup and the ranch dressing on the side helped. There are now more pastas on the lunch menu than I recall. The Crab Mac and Cheese sounds promising, and it wasn't bad, but nothing to get excited about. In the bite that I had, it was super bland, in need of at least pepper Also, I found it a little soupy with an unappetizing fishy brine taste. We had no interest in dessert today. The service was fine. The price point is very reasonable for the location. Still, Bar Verde has lost the verve and special flavors that made it memorable. read more

I decided to give Bar Verde another try after a horrible delivery experience from their other location because I really do enjoy their food. This time, we ordered cocktails, a burger, and a salad to split, and our server--who was friendly and attentive--offered to have everything cut in half for us, which was a nice touch. Unfortunately, the issue that's been consistent every time we've dined here happened again: the food took almost an hour to arrive. That kind of wait for a burger and salad feels excessive, especially when it's not a one-time thing. When the food finally came out, the server explained that half of our burger had been dropped, so we were served the remaining half and half or less of the usual fries, with the assurance that a fresh replacement was being made. We finished what we had and then waited another 40+ minutes--with no sign of the second half. When the server eventually returned and said it would be out "soon," we just said to forget it. If I had made the mistake, I would've made sure the replacement was rushed to the table--not treated as a new ticket in the back of the line. Also, there is never a manager. To their credit, they didn't charge us for the burger and gave us a 20% off coupon for next time. But offering a discount to return and spend more money after a disappointing experience doesn't really feel like a resolution. read more

My mom, sisters and I had an amazing lunch at Bar Verde this past Saturday. The hostess and servers were friendly and amazing, the food was incredible and the place was very clean. The restaurant is located in the Nordstrom Store at the Century City Mall. The place has inside and outside dining with a nice entrance that is next to the bar. I was immediately greeted and was seated quickly as well. The host was nice and my server quick. I ordered the lobster bisque, calamari, chicken sandwich , crab macaroni, and salmon salad. The food came out so fresh and eye appealing. We devoured the food quickly and was really satisfied. I've never eaten here before but wil surely come back. Open air, nice and roomy. The service was great, our waitress was amazing. Didn't quite get her name but she was great and gracious. Drinks was good as well as the starters and main. Came by for an early dinner, place wasn't packed at all and sat at the bar. The food was so delicious and the drinks were great. Service was awful, it was the blind leading the blind clearly no manger around. They didn't know how to make the drinks, I had to tell the lady how to make my cocktail and anytime we needed anything it took at least 15 minutes at least. They don't know how to do more than one thing and it's just sad they all need training and then this place would be great! This was not a good one. I admit it was completely my fault for coming here and making the mistake of buying a terrible lunch. I guess I was remembering this place for what it was years prior. The cilantro chicken lime tacos were great, but I was thinking of something different that I *thought* I had enjoyed on a previous visit. Was craving a turkey club and I didn't want to drop a high amount on something like Potato Chips Deli so I decided to come here, thinking that at one time I had a decent meal and didn't feel I had spent so much. First off was something that is happening everywhere; they said they were short-staffed so there was a wait regardless if you want something to go or if you wanted to dine-in. Since I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, I left my # to be contacted within 10-15 minutes. When 20 hit, I walked back and was told they just about to reach out to me, however, a random woman walked in behind me and was able to be seated immediately (she was not on the list as the rest of us were) so I'm not sure how this was right. Instead of staying, I decided on the turkey club with fries to go. Took about another 20 minutes so this entire sequence was nearly an hour. Thank God I wasn't on timed lunch break. As for the food, it was pretty awful. The meat didn't appear fresh so I had piles of bad turkey sitting aside and the good stuff (bacon and avocado) was either spread thin or rationed where there was barely enough. No aioli for the fries so I had ranch. Fries were okay but this was a complete waste of $17+ for a meal that wasn't enjoyable by any means. I guess I didn't choose wisely? Next time, I'll skip Bar Verde when I crave a turkey club. read more

Food was great but the cocktails were even better! If you fancy something smoky with a hint of heat coming from the jalapeno then "Smoke and Heat" will blow you away, especially the bold taste of alderwood giving that extra kick! Another good alternative to something thirst-quenching that I loved with less heat was the "Instant Gratification." If you enjoy the taste of ginger beer, another favorite would be the "Nor'easter." Who would have ever thought that a café located inside Nordstrom can offer such an impressive craftsmanship on drinks? Delicious! As far as small plate orders.... 1.) For starters, the Hamachi Tostada and Cilantro Lime Chicken Tacos are a MUST! I'm a huge fan of anything yuzu and raw fish so this was the perfect combination to get the palette going. The tostada was nicely toasted, crispy and the fish was super fresh. The chicken tacos were absolutely delightful. I'm usually not a chicken tacos person as I prefer beef/asada but our wait staff recommended this plate. Boy, what a hit! That cilantro lime vinaigrette and the crispy taco shell gave such a wonderful light crunchy bite. Definitely my top two favorites! 2.) Fried Calamari - Hm! I wasn't a fan of this dish because nothing was special or unique about its preparation or taste. The sweet chili sauce threw me off guard as it reminded me of the orange chicken sauce but on octopus. My friends loved it but I digress. I would opt out from this one during my next visit. 3.) Neapolitan Pizza was average in my books. First off, presentation was divine. Dough was well prepared and tasted like any other typical crushed tomato and basil with fresh mozzarella pizza. Again, another dish that I thought was good but nothing extremely out of the ordinary. 4.) Tagliatelle & Clams! Huge winner! The ratio of clams to al dente noodles was graciously portioned. Flavors were bold, tasty, and garlicy and the right about of zest coming from a dash of squeezed lemon! My favorite main entrée! Service was attentive and thankfully I came during a slow weeknight after my shopping splurge. Love this entirely revamped Nordstrom and amen to the brilliant mastermind behind Nordstrom's creator to have an eatery inside a shopping mall. I've been eating at Nordstroms restaurants for over 10 years at different locations. Everyone always gets really surprised how much I love Bar Verde/Nordstrom restaurants. The food never disappoints! I especially love their cilantro lime shrimp salad, side of fries, and iced tea. The food is solid across the board -- I even own four of Nordstrom's cookbooks! Service is a little slow at this particular location, but that's ok. My only gripe is the prices have definitely increased substantially. If I recall correctly, a side of fries used to be around $3. Now it's $7.50. Crazy!!! I do notice they try to skimp out on recent orders. For example, it used to be standard for the olive aioli dip to come with fries, but now they only give ketchup. They also used to be generous with the amazing complimentary mint chocolate at the end, but now you have to ask for it. It's a little annoying to remember everything. The bread also used to be free and given without asking. I guess nordstrom restaurants have left a special place in my heart. My grandfather and I would used to eat at nordstrom's all the time growing up. It's so comfortable, relaxing, and for my grandfather's favorite, they serve alcohol. read more

We walked in here on Saturday 12/16/24 and nobody welcomed us, I tried to find someone to ask to be seated but I couldn't. My wife is 5 months pregnant and she needed to sit and we sat ourselves at the patio. The waitress came in and took the order after 2-3 minutes a supervisor showed up and he tolda me that we couldn't sit as we wanted. That might be true however resturant was empty , it wasn't busy at all. He asked to move another table so we were definitely fine with it. I strongly believe that he moved us up to show us his power. My friends and I went to lunch here on a Saturday after seeing a movie at the mall and had a wonderful time. The waiter was so friendly and asking us about the movie we saw and didn't rush us when we were taking forever to order and trying to catch up at the same time. Overall the food was nothing special but still a great lunch. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip for an appetizer and it was filling for 3 people. My friend ordered the tacos and they were very small and recommend only ordering it if you're getting the tacos as an appetizer. The berry salad was good but I wish I would have added a protein to it. I like Bar Verde because it's on the top floor of Nordstrom and I feel a lot of people don't know about it so it seems exclusive (I recommend sitting on the patio!). The bathroom situation is a little weird as they don't have one in the restaurant and it's in the actual store. Now, parking will be a mess and expensive if you choose to park in the garage. Bar Verde is a pretty sleek, expansive bar on the top floor of Nordstrom. And the best part is, at least during Sunday afternoon, nice and empty. There's also a cool outdoor seating area with a ton of outdoor seating. The view isn't as good as Eataly roof deck, but it's a good second with cheaper fare. We got a couple of drinks here and they were pretty solid. Not a bad beer selection too for a bar in shopping area - allagash white and racer 5s. Had an excellent lunch for $17, which these days isn't too bad. Ordered a salad and the appetizer cilantro lime chicken tacos. The Pear, Kale and Blue Cheese salad is full of flavor with farro and arugula and candies pecans. I really enjoyed the flavors here and the blue cheese isn't that strong if you are not a big fan of it. I love blue cheese so I wish there was some more of it, but it's more balanced which in the end is a good thing. It's a filling dish and I could've skipped the tacos. However, the cilantro lime chicken tacos are one of my favorites. It's $6.50 for two small crispy shelled tacos. So don't expect a lot. They used to sell it with the three tacos but it was $9 (from what I remember.) I could easily eat ten of these. We've all been there. You're sitting around with some friends or perhaps already in the car with your partner and the idea of getting something to eat is proposed. Naturally, after endless questions about what everyone is interested in, every potential hero of the day reaches for their phones and begins digging through Yelp or any of a hundred other sources. The reviews you find are either overly mean or are far from descriptive enough to give you a sense of a restaurant's potential. Time and time again, this has been my experience. For my own mental health and my stomach's happiness, I decided to do something about it. With that, my new restaurant series, Gnaw, was born. Enjoy! The Stage Century City Mall is a mall unlike any other. Ranging from high-end department stores to brands native to LA, it is a rare blend of something for everyone all in a beautiful outdoor setting. For my first culinary/writing adventure, Yelp recommended "Bar Verde" on the top floor of Nordstrom. Now, this is a restaurant at a department store which isn't usually a combination for the height of culinary excellence, but even people who spend the day shoe shopping can work up an appetite. I, on the other hand, have decided to review everything Yelp recommends for me... So, Bar Verde, it is. The Service Our waitress was attentive, hilarious, and engaging. She was present to our needs without lingering. As a former waiter, she made me proud. The Food What I ate and drank is pictured above. If I were to use five adjectives to describe the food, I would say inventive, crispy, spicy, approachable, and balanced. I started with the "Hummingbird" cocktail which was a mixture of Sombra Mezcal, Olmeca Altos Plata Tequila, pineapple juice, fresh lime juice, agave syrup, and club soda. It was refreshing, relaxing, and strong; the perfect end to a warm summer day. Next, we moved on to the Brussels Sprouts. They were slightly overdone for my taste. We still devoured them, though. It made me think, why did we all wait so long to start eating these things. Finally, I finished the evening with a spicy and blackened chicken sandwich with a side a fries. Nothing out of this world, thousands of restaurants in LA serve this dish. Sometimes, familiar is the best way to go. The Price For two people, our total bill was $70+tip. Based on what we ate and drank, this is slightly overpriced in my mind, but then again this is a restaurant in Nordstrom, so when in Rome. The Takeaway For what it is, Bar Verde is a decent escape from the hectic world several floors below. If you run across it and need some solace, I recommend stopping in for a quick bite to eat. It seems odd at first, to make your way through Nordstrom's men's clothing department to the restaurant's 3rd floor entrance. But Bar Verde was an unexpectedly nice surprise for lunch with work colleagues. Modern, clean contemporary decor with a quiet and relaxing atmosphere and great views of Century City. Our server was friendly and efficient with excellent menu suggestions. We started with a small plate of Burrata with Apples, with a drizzle of pomegranate molasses sauce which nicely complemented the tartness of the green apples. Bread is provided upon request with a dipping oil. Which, of course, we devoured. My main entrée was the Brick Oven Steak Salad. One of the best steak salads I've ever eaten. Mouthwateringly good. Seriously perfect. I'm from Texas and I love steak. I'm not so big on salads, but this is a win/win combination. Friends ordered BV Burger, Chicken Satay Salad, and a customized pasta penne dish made with shrimp instead of chicken. I stole a fry from my friend's plate, crispy goodness. Everyone was very happy with their menu selections. We all cleaned our plates, and were too full to even contemplate dessert. I discovered Bar verde at the mall about 3 years ago. Our family use to go a lot for lunch and also order take out and we enjoy good service and great food. This year we have seen the service and food decline significantly. In the past, there would be a greeter who would always say hello and take you to your table. The last few times we had an unfriendly greeter that would not even say hello and proceeded to act as eating at the restaurant was an inconvenience to them. This past Friday we decided to go to dinner and there was no greeter, two tables in total occupied and 3 employees in the main area. After a few minutes of waiting, someone came to ask where we wanted to sit and we decided to sit at the bar thinking we would get better service than in the past sitting at the tables. The place was almost empty. The drinks were good but we had to get our own utensils, none were given to us when appetizer arrived and we ask the waitress twice to didn't bring an extra plate. The people that were sitting outside had to come inside to get their bill. I had a pasta dish and my husband had a fish and both were loaded with salt and you could not taste anything else. It doesn't matter the day or time, it is consistently in decline. New management is needed urgently. read more

Probably some of the worst customer service received from Nordstrom and from a restaurant within the Westfield Century City mall. As soon as a large party was seated we were ignored. No one checked on our food. Our drinks were left empty. We had to flag the hostess down to order dessert (and the only reason we stayed for dessert was because it was a birthday lunch). After being ignored for almost an hour, I talked to the young female manager of the day. After letting her know how unhappy we were with the poor service, she shrugged her shoulders and said "the large party set us back" and walked away from me. My daughter tried the lime chicken salad. Everything was tasty. My crab roll had a nice portion of crab and the brioche bun was excellent. The lime chicken salad was flavorful and had tons of ingredients. The spaghetti and meatballs was perfect. We will definitely return. read more

When a friend of mine said he wanted to check out Bar Verde I was a little confused. He's a huge foodie and he wants to go a restaurant in a department store? He mentioned that he had checked out Bar Verde by himself a week before for lunch and wanted to check out their dinner menu. Trusting his judgement I went...reluctantly. Arrived on the 3rd Floor of the Nordstrom at Century City Mall I made my way to my party. The ambiance is not what I had expected. It was really chic! I was expecting a starbucks / cafe vibe where you pick up a sandwich at the counter type of establishment. They had a huge patio where I could imagine a birthday party, bridal shower, or a girls night happening. Now onto the meal. Drinks drinks drinks! Their cocktail menu is amazing. Full bar and all their signature cocktails were amazing. I tried about 6 ( because that's how I roll ) and every single one was delicious. My favorite was the cucumber cocktail. So refreshing but spicy just the way I like it. HAMACHI TOSTADA - Very fresh and such a beautiful dish. Definitely ask for a wedge of lime CILANTRO LIME CHICKEN TACOS - My favorite. I could eat 30 of these. The shell was fried perfectly to give enough crunch with every bite. FRIED CALAMARI - I've never met a calamari I didn't like. TAGLIATELLE & CLAMS - Great once again ! On a roll! very generous with the clams. NEAPOLITAN PIZZA - Nothing special but not bad. Its a safe dish. CRAB ROLL - Huge chunks of crab but it was a bit bland. The roll was amazing though. Surprisingly, there are very few options for happy hour at the Westfield Century City Mall. It seems as though there are only about three or four places that actually have a happy hour menu, and Bar Verde is always my go to! The patio seating is fantastic! They have heaters for the cooler season and it's also covered and shaded for when it's hot. There is a clear glass kitchen so you can peek in and watch all the items being made, which I love. And the happy hour menu is not only reasonably priced but also incredibly delicious. I like to mix in a few of their non happy hour menu items sometimes, usually dessert, and you will not be disappointed. I am STILL thinking about that amazing carrot cake with pumpkin spice gelato. And finally, all of their employees are super friendly. I believe our server was Jenn last time and she was truly a gem. Everything she recommended was phenomenal. The food was delicious. We had the hamachi tostada, mushroom penne, chicken tacos, and the grilled Caesar salad. I give that 5 stars. But the service was horrible. Minus 2 stars. The manager was the one taking care of us but there was definitely a miscommunication between him and our server because we were never actually helped throughout the night. It took them about 8 minutes to actually come and greet us after we were seated, another 18 minutes for our drinks to come out, and then 5 min later all of our food came out at the same time (appetizers, salad, and entree). When we were done eating, the manager came to check up on us and we voiced our complaint but his response was it was the grand opening of Eataly and they had not scheduled accordingly so dessert on the house. I'm sorry but cookies on the house is a reaaaaaally poor way of trying to solve the issue. We wanted to order more food/drinks but it was difficult to do so with no one checking on us until an hour after we had sat down. I would come again if I was at Nordstrom, realized I was extremely hungry, and only grabbing a quick bite at the bar. read more

First time eating at this cafe. Like it for lunch in the heated outside patio overlooking century plaza construction which is so cool. Ordered tomato bisque and loved it! Shared brussel sprouts and my friend got his Turkey club sandwich. Food came fast and staff is super friendly!
