CZ is a collectively-run business where the workers are also the owners and hierarchy is dispensed with. The vibe is relaxed, all seems to run smoothly and pretension is non-existent. The menu is a mix of meat dishes, veggie dishes and vegan fare, all organic. Locally and ethically sourced products, whenever possible, is Cafe Zähringer's way. Of my few visits, I have only ever had flavorful meals attractively presented. I took my family on their first ever visit to CH to CZ for dinner and they very much enjoyed it! Having lived through the Summer of Love in San Fran as young adults, I'd like to say that this place brought 'em back, in a good way. Some of the cuisine we sampled was: Bärlauch pesto over penne, gorgeous creamed broccoli-bell pepper soup, halloumi plate accompanied by different types of salad, and tofu with veggies in a curry broth. The family was satisfied and so was I. On a warm day nothing really beats sitting outside under the trees with birds chirping having, as Ken M. said, righteous 'hippie food' at Cafe Zähringer. When I arrived, I went up to the counter and asked one of the employees if the donuts were vegan. I asked him this in English and he replied that they were and then showed me and explained every other item they had that was also vegan- in English. His flexibility with language was very much appreciated. The bakery/restaurant is large and has a variety of different seating options- inside, bar seating, small tables in the front, and larger tables in the back. Everyone who works here is very friendly and willing to help. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. I got a delicious prepared vegan sandwich for only 9 CHF. The coffee was also very good and the donut was perfect. It was really hearty and actually sufficed as a breakfast. It was much more filling than the typical American fluffy donuts. It tasted very fresh and was not sickly sweet. I really recommend this place! They open really early in the moning and go through 9 PM or so.

At the urging of a local friend, I purchased a Gnaedinger gipfeli last week for the first time. As promised, it was buttery-good. I've since been back for more of the same. Yesterday, I was hankering for a bit of chocolate, so I ordered a 'schoggi-gipfeli' (chocolate croissant). Gnaedinger offers two kinds: the usual gipfeli with a standard chocolate filling, and a 'special' gipfeli with Gnaedinger chocolate with fendant centre in the middle. As a relative newbie to the Schweiz, I can't say that I know my way around a Swiss choco-croissant, regardless if it's made with fancy chocolate or not. Still, I opted for the 'upgrade' as I was curious about the fendant-filled delight in the middle of the pastry. The schoggi-gipfeli was worth the 3.30CHF, but, let me say to the uninitiated, expect to be eating, basically, a croissant with a decently-sized chocolate bar lodged into its belly. Part of me wanted to remove the bar and eat it separately, but, as I was sitting with my bounty and a coffee near others across the way in Starbucks, I didn't want to draw attention to myself. Other good bits to be found in the Bakery/Confectionery zone: bread, rolls, sandwiches, laugenbroetli of various description, truffles, cakes and tortes.

I was meeting 2 very good Swiss German friends from Zurich -- one a manager of major flagship retail store on Bahnhofstrasse for 20 years the other a Zurich politician and lawyer. We arrived, it was empty outside -- we gathered 3 tables as there was no one outside to assist. A woman came out (perhaps under the influence) and was extremely rude and demanded that we need to go into the empty bar (inside) ask her permission as she is the boss (she is not) and then assemble the tables. I again -- looked around at the empty outside area and said again in English and in German that we are 8 people (not knowing if she spoke German) and where would she like us to sit? She looked around at the empty tables again -- said she is the boss and demanded she must be informed. I again said, ok we'd please like a table for 7 people where would you like us to sit here outside -- there were several empty tables. She rolled her eyes, huffed and walked inside. We sat for about 15 min... unattended. I walked into the (empty) bar inside and said in German to her (she was behind the bar with younger man that worked there) we'd like to order 3 beers, a water and a coke. She laughed at me. I said what is so funny? She said, "your comical accent" in German. I then looked at the other bar back and said, "May I please order 3 beers a coke and a mineral water?" He was very nice and lovely. My 2 other fiends met me and ordered champagne -- we had a lovely time. I went inside to pay the bill and left the man a 10 CHF tip on 90 CHF (service is included in Switzerland - but I like to give extra to be nice) and asked him if we should place the tables back where they were. He said absolutely not -- that he would do it. I will never go back. Funny, I know the owner of this cafe. And, the behaviour was super strange from this very frustrated, woman employee. I would have left in the beginning had I not agreed with my Swiss friends to meet there.

I came here to enjoy a good book and cappuccino by myself. I can't comment on the food as I didn't get anything to eat from the menu. The cappuccino was rich and velvety with a decent layer of foam. Just how I like it! This is a great place to enjoy the weather and just people-watch. The staff members aren't overbearing at all. My waitress was a friendly lady, who was helpful and also gave me space.

This pension is located above/next to the cafe/bar of the same name. It's in a residential area but a short walk from tram lines and the Wipkingen train stop. These give quick access to the airport and downtown. You check in at the bar and receive a coupon for a free beer/coffee which is a nice touch. The 5 rooms are named after various fruits. I stayed in Cherry which is a single twin bed room. Despite being above a busy cafe/bar, my room was quiet and had a view over the street and patio for the cafe. The single bathroom is shared so there might be an issue with waiting, although I had no issues during my stay. I'd definitely stay there again if I return to Zurich. For the cafe, I took advantage of the season and drank gluhwein which was delicious. They were fairly crowded on a Thursday night which I took as a good sign. There is indoor and outdoor seating, with a fire pit outside. The morning I left, I had tea and scrambled eggs with chives. Tasty and a good start with some protein for the day. The cafe was lively even at 10am with lots of local residents. Check this place out if you're in Zurich!
