We were heading to a soccer game in Boussu to see the local team, Francs Borains play. Well you cannot go to a game on an empty stomach, so we spotted this place on the way. The frites looked pretty good but I have had a week of frites, so opted for just the pita sandwich. Well, I assumed it would be wrapped in that flat bread but nope, it was a full sized baguette (French bread) so lots more to chew. I had samurai sauce on it. My buddy had some chicken brochettes. Like most friteries (if not all) the food is all thrown into boiling fat. Not great for the arteries but not bad tasting either. Drinks wise, we had a Jupiler beer each. Other than that beer, there is also water and some soft drinks. There is also a big television in the place, so could be good for frites and football/soccer! read more

If I have to grab a fast food burger, I would prefer Burger King. Well, there are no Burger Kings…read morein Belgium (except the one on a US military base). Second choice would be McDonalds. This time however I found myself right next to a Quick, the Belgian McDonalds. All I wanted was a couple burgers and a couple coffees. This took about 15 minutes though! The place wasn't crowded. I got waited on 3 minutes after I walked into the place. The young lady was nice, took my order, smiled and brought me the coffees immediately. It was the burgers that took forever. I don't know if the kitchen staff/burger maker was on a smoke break but it took forever to get two burgers! Actually by the time they came the coffee was quasi-warm. I guess I shouldn't complain; customer service is not something that is important in Belgium. I just wish they would change the name to something that didn't make you think you'd be served and fed Quick-ly.

Stopped by while on vacation in Mons. We were biking around the city and looking for a place to…read moregrab a beer. The tavern is tucked away right by the soccer stadium. It was obviously a popular spot with the locals since there were plenty sitting at the bar. The service was great despite a language barrier. I do try with my French but it only goes so far. We each got a burger with fries and there are tons of sauce choices. I like spicy so I went with the samurai. The wife went straight mayo. Great beer selection at a decent price. Like the other few cafes close by, they put out stalls to sell beer to those going to the game. Taverne 44 is also a "friterie" where they serve those famous Belgian fries (with many different sauces including mayonnaise!) and other friterie snacks such as burgers, brochettes, frikandels and so on.
