It is almost impossible to find a good barber for a long mens haircut. Every other barber I have tried in the past would cut my hair too short ... then I had to grow it out again ... and try someone new. Luckily I found Mike at Barbershop Deluxe! He is great at doing classic mens hair cuts. Mike does great with my naturally curly longer hair. You don't have to explain much and he will make you look great. I came in for an appointment with M.Arida. I'm still wearing a mask indoors and they were super accommodating with it and gave me a really handsome cut that I like more every time I see myself in the mirror. I've been coming to this barbershop for the past 8+ years and always get a great cut, whether it's from my main barber or someone filling in. There are a wide range of barbers to choose from for just about any hairstyle and hair length. The shop is conveniently located in the Back Bay next to the train station. The atmosphere is friendly and casual. It's almost always busy, which is also a great sign! Boston Yelp, you confuse me. Half of your businesses don't exist and the other half have 5 stars when I can barely scrape a star together for them. I went to Barbershop Deluxe because, I mean, Deluxe, right? The guy I got was super friendly and nice and totally gave off that "I can be your local barber vibe". And everything was cool until he started actually cutting my hair. Guy had the weirdest technique. He would do a little flourish with his comb each time he took it away from my head and then swing it back with the result that the haircut was 10-15 minutes of him hitting me over the head with a comb. And he wasn't even systematic about it, he just randomly cut hair around my head, then switched to clippers which (fortunately) he didn't hit me in the head with. He then proceeded to misalign my sideburns. I know that sounds nitpicky, but even I can even out my sideburns and I', totally uncoordinated. He also did one of those neck shaves, which are always awesome, except when you barely graze the skin with the razor and leave little patches of hair so I look like I have alopecia. End result: A kind of crummy haircut I could have gotten at a $10 hole-in-the-wall that I paid $30 for. Nothing against the guy, he was nice. Nothing against the shop, it seems cool. But if they're gonna hire a guy like mister brush flourish, I'd strongly advise against going there. read more

Walked into this barbershop or salon? Was told they take appointments but might be able to fit me in, one of the barbers who ended up cutting my hair asked around but to no avail as he begrudgingly agreed to do the dirty deed.His name Justin..I explained what I wanted while he perused his phone intently and kind of understood my request- he immediately began working like he was shearing a sheep- grabbing on my head, pushing the clippers and blade into my skull and the blades were getting hot, I felt like I was getting branded- not since basic training has someone rifled through my hair like that. I realize Justin has several good reviews here but are they real or planted by repeat customers or friends. Between Justin on the phone and chatting with his coworkers, playing DJ and bitching about his coworkers, I wanted to get out of the chair before he took it out on my head...As a first time experience this sucked. The sides were shorter than I wanted and the top left a bit too long. Upon inspection and leaving, things could have been worse but then, it did ...$40 seriously, apparently each barber has his own price. If I wanted to be treated like shit and had to pay for it I could have gone to a discount shop. While this isn't a reflection of everyone who works here I would try someone or somewhere else. read more

Six years later i live in the suburbs but still head into the South End every three weeks and didn't think twice when my son was ready for haircuts. Mike keeps us both looking fresh with a wide range of cuts. From professional to edgy, Mike can do it all and loves to experiment if you'll let him. Truly a master barber. There a lot of things in my life that I love - my family, my friends, volunteering, ice cream, BJs, etc. However, there are few things that I Iove and care about as deeply as my hair. I had a trusted hairdresser in my previous home in DC, but she wasn't cool with traveling 500 miles every time I needed a haircut, so I was forced to look to other sources. After some careful and thorough research, I decided that I would give barbershop deluxe a shot. I read rave reviews that touted Mike's great talent and creativity, so I decided to take the plunge. Lasses and lads, I was not disappointed. When I first sat down in Mike's chair, he started off by asking me about myself. My style, my interests, etc. I could see as I was telling him all this that shit was happening in his mind, and he was actively deciding the best course of action for me and my hair. I appreciated this personal approach that he took. Fast-forward to 25 minutes later. I emerged from his the shop looking like a badass, circa 1915. I have no idea what the style that Mike gave me is called, but it was f*cking fantastic. Besides his great talent for hair, Mike is also a really cool guy. He gives some great advice - from where to get cheap, vintage clothing, to how to approach the Boston legal system. He's a no-bullshit kind of guy, and I like that about him. Anyways, I love the vintage, classic, slick look that he gave me, and I will be coming back for more. I moved from Brooklyn to Boston a year ago and immediately found my favorite tailor and my favorite pizza shop. What I didn't find was a barber. I'd been a longtime customer of New York City's venerable FSC Barber and my first six months in Boston were marked by "okay" cuts at Big Dogs and Floyd's. I decided to give Mike at Barbershop Deluxe a try when the now-defunct Phoenix called him "The Best Barber in Boston" and mentioned his work with historic cuts. I booked a cut that day and never looked back. Barbershop Deluxe may not have a catchy name or an old-timey Ball and Buck / Art of Shaving aesthetic, but it makes up for both in skill. Mike is an expert at his craft with a phenomenal understanding of history and hair. He knows what your hair can do, can't do, and can recreate that cut you loved on Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire. I've run into a few scheduling snafus due to the shop not calling when Mike is sick or unable to make it to work, but he's always taken it upon himself to make it more than right. Did I mention that you can book online? We didn't have that in NYC. If you're looking for a historic throwback cut and you live in Boston, Mike is your guy. If you end up in Mike's chair, be prepared to get lots of compliments from friends and random strangers at bars. Just make sure that there's still room on his schedule for me. read more

After my beloved stylist left Boston, I needed to find a new place to lower my ears every couple of weeks. I went to Barbershop Deluxe with an open mind - hoping, praying it would be what I wanted it to be. Some cursory discussion on the Boston subreddit made it sound like haircut mecca: a blend of the charming, affordable barbershops of yore but sans the old, apathetic, uninspired attitude of your more typical, old world barbershop scissor jockeys. Between the reviews and a Boston Phoenix piece on the creative, customer-specific styles the place specialized in, my interest was piqued. Unfortunately, what I found was just your run-of-the-mill hair cuttery. Yes, it was cheap, but the attitude was less "we specialize in creatively making men look good" and more "we make hair shorter." Ugh. The cut was rushed, uneven, and lacked the sort of pre-cut "what do you want to do today/how do you wear it?" banter that really sets a first-time customer's mind at ease. Double ugh. And it was cash only. Triple ugh. If you're a conservative guy who works in the area, wants a quick cut over a lunch break, and isn't quite as discerning and narcissistic as I apparently am, this might indeed be your haircut mecca. I discovered Barbershop Deluxe a little over a year ago when I felt that my then-current stylist wasn't giving it her all. A Phoenix profile on Mike Coronella led me to to the shop, and I've been going there since then. Mike is extremely knowledgeable about a wide variety of period styles, and what works best for the individual. He is friendly, professional, and takes his job very seriously. While Mike is the one who cuts my hair, I have noticed that the rest of the staff is very curteous and helpful. Christina in particular pointed me in the direction of some products that are helpful for people with pomade-heavy styles like myself. The shop is clean, and the rates are extremely reasonable. Initially when I came across this shop, I was very hopeful in finding a barber shop I can call home (after going to countless shops in the Boston area). I first went to Mike, he was OK at first (figured it would take a cut or two to get used to my hair). After a a few cuts with Mike I noticed he would constantly be looking away or at the door - not really paying attention to cutting hair. Then one day the cut was just terrible - too short on the top, crooked (he even said "wtf" to himself). So I moved on from Mike and started getting cuts from Al. Al was an awesome barber - great conversation and person all around. I've probably gotten 10+ cuts from Al and loved them all. Unfortunately, I moved out of the city and have found a new shop. Mike just made my husband look super hot. I love this guy! My man's dislike of expensive, pretentious haircuts has led him down some bad roads (Supercuts, aging townie barbers), so when he started expressing the need for some maintenance up top, I decided to stage an intervention. I had read an article in the Phoenix about Mike and his encyclopedic knowledge of vintage haircuts and suggested giving it a shot. The shop is conveniently located near the T and is completely unpretentious. Mike is very conscientious and took the time to suss out what would work for my husband and even asked me what I liked on him. When vintage haircuts came up, he suggested a 1920s Great Gatsby look. It came out brilliantly, only took about 20 minutes, and cost $18 with a first-time online booking discount. My man left happy and agreed to never go to Supercuts again. Can't beat that! read more

This place is awesome. Simon L. recommended it to me right after I moved to Boston in September and I've been going every two weeks since. There are three chairs in this cute, classic, garden level Barbershop. I see Christina Morelli (and y'all can tell her I sent you). She's peppy and has been a barber for 9 years. We've worked into a casual friendship. I go every two weeks because I love sitting in her chair. Speaking of chairs: these are the REAL DEAL. Old school, well maintained worn dark green leather with seriously old school metal foot rests. After my haircut, she uses warm shaving cream and a straight edge on my neck. Classic. Prices are totally reasonable. $23 for Mens Basic. $18 if you come every two weeks/are a student. Sorry ladies, men only. Oh and there's no shampooing, just the occasional spritz of water. Call for hours, usually open tues-sat 2:30-8. They love walk-ins and can usually fit you in soon or tomorrow. What's not to love? read more

Go to Mike. He is fantastic. I'm so happy that I started going here. Before going to BSD, I hated getting my hair cut. I never really had a great idea of what I wanted and barbers/hairdressers never gave me great advice when I'd ask them for input. During my first cut with Mike, I came in well overdue for a trim and had previously tried a different shop that did not do a great job. After I first sat in his chair, Mike stared at my head for a good 5 minutes at different angles. He then let me have it: "What are we doing here?.. who has been cutting your hair?...There is no direction with your hair whatsoever...this is going to take a lot of work". Some people may be turned away by this kind of forwardness, but this was EXACTLY what I was looking for. A barber with enough confidence to tell me what looks good and what will work best for me. Finally. So by the end of my first cut, Mike had planned out and explained to me a whole strategy for how we were going to fix my hair. Now, after about 3 or 4 months of going to Mike, I love my haircut. I was even in a friend's wedding party and the photographer stopped me to tell me she loved my hair cut. I had a truly bad haircut here. The guy's name is Patrick. I just asked him for a normal haircut, buzzed on the sides and back. He proceeded to box my head with two electric razors, spray me with so much water that it was dripping from my nose, and tried to cut my ear off with a comb. There are parts of my hair that he didn't clean up much at all. The sides of my head now have these pointy corners sticking out. This barbershop looks quaint and old-timey but no one is paying for the atmosphere of a barbershop. At least he was a nice guy? Edit: the owner offered a refund and fix for the haircut. I'm a newcomer to Boston and happened to be in the area on a Saturday evening, checking out some apartments. It also happened that I was in dire need of a haircut. Having read the Yelp reviews of Deluxe, I decided to give them a call, although with the expectation that they would be booked out for the last closing hour. To my surprise, Mike (who's also newly employed there) was available. I guess in places like this one everybody has their preferred barber and it's harder to break in a newbie, so they tend to be more available at start, until they build a loyal client base. Well, I decided to try my luck with Mike and did not regret it. Lately, I've been digging the Don Draper slick look, so I decided, just like with everything new around me, to get change up my hair style a bit. So I told Mike that I'd be interested in doing something like that (esp due to my job's conservative environment) and he was happy to oblige. In fact, he told me he prefers to specialize in period haircuts so I was really lucky I got the right guy. Furthermore, he studied the Don Draper look in so many details that he knew exactly what was needed. And little do you know, within 15-20 mins of scissor work and neat tapering, I had the look I desired. No room for complaint or dissatisfaction. UPDATE: Went for the second time, adjusted a few things based on the previous one, and the result looked even better. I guess you could say I'm a regular now. So this is my very first yelp review, and I'm writing because I had a GREAT experience getting a haircut from Mike! I am about to go on a round of interviews for corporate type work, and I needed a new professional cut. After reading from an earlier yelp review about Mike's experience with the "Don Draper" look, I figured he would be able to set me up with a good look. I told Mike about my interview situation and he knew just what to do. In about 15 minutes I had the best cut I've ever received. I truly will be coming back to him for the rest of my life!! I was unaware of the appointment system as it was my first time going to this shop. They let me know that when I went in, but within ten minutes Albert had me come up for a cut, and I'll tell you, he did not disappoint. After washing my hair, I told him what I wanted and I even had a picture at the ready, but I trusted his judgement. After about a half hour my haircut was complete, and I was about as psyched as I've ever been on a haircut. I really appreciated the timely manner in which I was seen even without an appointment (which I know is probably the exception and not the rule), and the price was right. On top of it all, which the most important part of going to the barber, is that I loved my cut. I've already told several friends about the place, and I will certainly be returning soon! read more
