I went in for a bottle or two of Merlot and spent an hour in there! I came away with some local Kin Toffee Vodka and some great local cheeses. The wines held are pretty big from all over the world. Anne Berry was very helpful with selecting the wines and processing the order. Since then we have continued to make the annual Christmas purchase, we also stop in to purchase wine, beer and spirits when we visit family in Douglas as the shop is walking distance from the house. Their primary focus is wine but they also offer a good selection of spirits, beers and specialty mixers. The shop is conveniently located in a residential area with plenty of parking. I was thrilled to see my new favorite Sauvignon Blanc for 7.5 quid. I got 2 bottles and a 4 pack of Heineken. As I was checking out the clerk said, "that Heineken is alcohol free" Whoa Joe wouldn't like that. I didn't know the difference since I'm not a beer drinker... You save a fortune purchasing this in advance. It ended out being a great decision because we had to wait almost 2 hours to get checked in to our room. The next day we decided to take a tour of Bownes the town that we drove thru on our way to Windermere Beech Hotel. It was great because I saw Bargain Booze once again and they remembered me from the day before. I got some more of that wonderful wine once again. They do great deals on cases of beer and stock lots of the main brands. They also do some great real ale options aswell although you can buy these by the bottle, they do some good deals such as four bottles for five pounds. They also sell an awful lot of different wines, the whole back wall of this shop is allocated to them. I find that I can get my favourite wine, Blossom Hill, here a lot cheaper by the bottle or if I buy more than one you get even more money off such as three bottles for nine pounds. The spirits are also much cheaper than anywhere else. They also sell snacks and tobacco, soft drinks and mixers. The parking is very accessible and there are always lots of spaces.

And slowly, as time has gone by, I have grown from the sullen teenager bored by the rows and rows of wine to a young man entranced by the scale, size and scope of this fine establishment. Basically, Byrnes has been around for years. Family owned and family run, it's a massive booze shop of the highest quality. As you enter there are shelves that seem to reach up to the sky, filled with sherries, gin, vodka etc. But this is just the teaser, as you head down to the cellars that await. Three damp caverns await you filled with wine from around the world. If these guys don't have it, they'll get it for you. Expect the place to be packed on Saturdays as you carefully manoeuvre around the place. Well worth the trip.

I know they sell a lot more than just whisky (wine, gin, ale, etc. - but I went in to look at the whiskies so it's a whisky shop to me). The range is huge in size and scope. This includes whiskies from Scotland (obviously), Ireland, Wales, USA, Canada and (shudder!) England!!! There are some gaps but there are also some rarities in there. Prices were very reasonable too, considering. Some select whiskies were actually cheaper than you'd find in the Whisky Exchange in Edinburgh. If I'd had more time I'd have looked at the Real Ale section more and probably spent more money!
