Barry takes the time and has attention to detail when it comes to cutting hair. If you become a client of his you will find he is not just a typical barber. He has a very old school approach from his shop to chairs and even how he conducts business. I live west of Bakersfield and drive the hour and 30 minutes one way every 3 weeks to get a haircut from Barry which their are a lot of barbers that I bypass in Bakersfield on my way to his shop. Posting on behalf of my signifcant other... I've given this jerkoff at least 3 solid attempts to see what he can do but everytime I show up his attitude and personality just arent worth my time. This last chance I opened up their door to be told, "yo man, you fucked, I'm done" and him and all his "boys" broke out in laughter....what actually happened that was funny? Piss poor attitude, can't imagine what his work could be a like. JUNE 11... I won't be coming back to Barry's Barber Shop. Very, very loud, talking politics and cussing & degrading women around my TWO year old son then stopping during the hair cut to talk more while my son is waiting in the chair to have his cut finished. It took over 45 minutes for his cut to be finished because he kept stopping to talk... Heard the C word thrown around a few times too. read more

Glowing reviews for Barry on this and on other sites, and they do great work, but I've gone in too many times to find only one barber working (often not Barry) and an interminably long wait for service. The final straw was when, after waiting ten minutes while the only barber in the shop cut someone else's hair, he said "Hey dude, do you mind if I take five to eat my lunch?" Yes, I did mind and I walked out without saying a word. He followed me out while whining, "Look man, I'm not a robot. I don't know what you do for work but I bet you don't work without a break" More insulting still since, in my former occupation, I often got no break or my meals were interrupted by public safety calls. I responded that it's not his fault they OFTEN leave the shop staffed by only one barber, but it's also not my fault and that I didn't have the time (right then) to wait on him. Though he offered to go ahead and cut my hair right then, do you think I was going to let him touch my hair in his obviously agitated state? Nope ! Doubtful that I will ever go back. read more

Charges a premium for a hair cut but does not do what an good barber would do. Thing like shave neck, trim eyebrows or ears.

My barber of 40 years was sick, so I went to Barry's Barber on July 8th to get a trim before leaving on a trip. Big Mistake. This ought to be Barry's Butcher Shop. I got in the chair of a dark haired guy by the window and asked for just two things, a trim and to not cut my hair too short because it will not lay down (he never told me his name; now I know why). What I got was a military-style, whitesidewall disaster. He cut my hair so short that is now untrained and growing in all directions just as I had cautioned him against. Nothing, absolutely nothing grows slower than a bad haircut, and this one is awful. I won't be going back to this place and don't recommend that anyone else go either. read more

Barry does a great shave! Only $20, takes about 20 minutes. He puts a hot towel on before and after. My husband really liked it. He said he'll get one every time he's in town. Plus the shop has an old school Galaga arcade and candy. read more

We went in yesterday to get my son a much-needed haircut. He is nearly 15 months old and it was only his second haircut. I was nervous because his first haircut elsewhere had been a disaster. Jessi was very kind, patient, and sweet with my wiggly baby boy. She made sure to give him a great cut and was careful to account for his many unfortunate cowlicks :) I was very happy with the work she did and would gladly come back. This place is tucked into a small shopping center, and is no nonsense, no fuss. For a quick cut, I was satisfied! I am thinking of sending my husband here for a straight razor shave for his birthday. This past Saturday, July 13, was my first time getting a haircut in Tehachapi. As a person of color, I'm really timid when it comes to trying new barbers because it's hard to tell which barbers actually know how to cut African hair. I went to Barry's off of a recommendation from one of my friends and the lady who cut my hair made it seem like she understood what I meant when I asked her if she could do a shadow fade. When she was cutting, she left my sides uneven and I had to point it out to her how uneven it was and in her attempt to fix it she only made it worse by shaving too much off of one side. I later heard from my friend that I was supposed to go to Barry himself to receive the cut and no one else. My concern is why the lady made it seem like she understood what I meant and instead gave me a reason to buy a hat right after my haircut. I'm going to try and contact Barry so I can see if there is any way to fix my hair and I will pay because it's worth losing the feeling of embarrassment. read more

Finding a good barber is always difficult, which is why I am glad to have found Barry's in Old Town, Golden Hills / Tehachapi, CA. New to the area I was in need of a new barber and happened to walk in to Barry's. I am pretty particular about my haircuts and Barry does a great job. I found everything I look for in a great barber shop is here: 1) Friendly Staff 2) Skilled Barber 3) Clean Facility They are usually fairly busy but seem to be efficient at moving through clients.
