I came to Elan many years ago as a "fur newbie" with an "old lady fur" that I bought at a resale shop. It had been neglected and needed some TLC. They were able to breathe some life back into it. I have moved on and bought a custom coat created for me. Since those early years my daughter and I have come across a few lovely furs that of course were also somewhat neglected. Elan works their magic and gets them wear ready. You must store your furs properly for many years of enjoyment. When I think of fur, I think of Elan and how wonderful they are. I inherited a fur coat and needed an appraisal. I walked in hours after calling to have it evaluated. Within seconds, Anna knew the type of fur (I had no idea) and how old the coat was. For $55 I got official documentation for the estate (or insurance purposes) and a recommendation on how to care for the coat or sell it if I need to. If I keep it, I'd very much consider cleaning and storing at Elan Furs. read more

This spring I stored a long mink coat and a short mink jacket. I told Anna that I wanted the bomber jacket sleeves altered and I paid for it. She took my measurement and said that she would call me for a fitting. She never called so I called her and she said that it was done. I said that I didn't have a fitting. I went in to get the coat and they had altered the wrong coat . Instead of apologizing she said that I got a free alteration. I said that you change someone's car without their permission. They then altered the bomber jacket but said that she hadn't included $450 dollars for a new lining that it would need. Ok- I paid that..which I thought should have been told to me at the beginning. I wore my coat about 6 times and the bottom of the lining came out. I took the coat in and a lady was disgruntled because they couldn't find her coat. Please... I will NOT go back. have to agree with the other negative reviews both here and on Citysearch. Customer service is nonexistent, from the clerks all the way to the owner, Anna. I stored 2 coats there because I had seen they were in business for such a long time, thinking that I would support a small business rather than taking the coats to a luxury department store. I had previously had a very bad experience with one of my minks getting stolen by Howard Bresnick at the Chicago Fur Outlet/ The Furry Godmother in Lincoln Park; I was thrilled to find a business that I thought I could trust in Barth Wind Furs. I stored the coats in May 2014 and just picked them up on Nov 22, 2014. I had tried calling to see if they had changed the hooks on my long mink coat and to see what the charges would be. After being dodged by Anna for 3 days in a row, I finally just went to the shop in Morton Grove to just get my coats. Of course, needless to say, the hooks were not changed. I was very angry, but decided to just take my business elsewhere. So today, Nov 24, 2014 I took my long mink to Macy's at Water Tower Place to get the hooks changed. Lo and behold, I was told by the manager who was inspecting my coat that the coat had never been cleaned! (the lining still had salt stains on it, the lining was all wrinkled, both of which should not have been the case if it was actually cleaned.) I was mortified! So of course, I called Anna and requested my money back. I paid $75 for each coat to be cleaned, glazed and stored. She started yelling at me! Imagine!! She was the one at fault, I was out the money, and she had the nerve to be condescending and NASTY. I called Macy's to get their professional opinion in writing, which I will then submit to the BBB and to Anna so that I can get my money back. She just lost a customer for life. Had everything gone properly there, I would have considered purchasing my next fun fur from Barth Wind, but there is no way I will EVER do business with them again. I strongly suggest that you heed the reviews shown here and on Yelp regarding this terrible business. Go to Macy's or Bloomingdale's instead. read more

I am so done dealing with this furrier. While the proprietor has a nice demeanor, they overcharged me for re-doing my coat and I have had repeated problems with storage (including not being able to find the coat, saying I never paid and making me pay twice to get my coat from storage, incompetent office staff, etc). The last straw was going in today to pick up my coat. It was not ready. The girl asked me FOUR times to spell my name. They waited on a woman who came in after me, before me. I have given this business way too much money to be treated so disrespectfully. I imagine they are better to people who spend even more money than I have? I will say that both another employee and the owner reached out to rectify the situation and went beyond my expectations to deliver my coats well after that service was offered. I have been going to Elan Furs for more than 25 years and have bought three coats from them. Previously I had bought a full length beaver coat from Marshall Fields, and while the service was good and I really liked the coat, I dealt with someone different each time I went. My mother had been a long term customer of Elan, back when it was Barth Wind, and after visiting Elan with her I switched to Elan. The service is much more accommodating than just buying, storing, or altering a fur, because they will teach you about your fur. First I bought a full length mink from them. They altered it, cleaned it, and stored it. After only two years I realized that the mink didn't suit my then current lifestyle. I needed something more casual. I was smitten with a black sheared beaver that was way too big for me. They didn't push me at all. However, after a few visits, Anna offered to make major alterations and take in the mink towards the cost of the beaver. I had only worn the mink three times. The sheared beaver stroller turned out perfect, and to top that off I was happy with the deal Anna gave me. It was unexpected and I'm sure out of the norm for them. While all this was going on I was also eyeballing a black lamb lined belted coat but just couldn't justify spending the additional money on it. Each time I went back to Elan either for an alteration, to pick up or drop of a coat, I looked at that coat. One day it was on sale at a drop dead price, so I snapped it up. What I'm saying here it that I never felt pressured to do anything with my coats. Suggestions were made, but it was always my decision. Have my coat(s) always been ready on time? Not always. But neither was Marshall Fields. They are a small business with a great selection of furs. They know fur inside out. Last, and I can say this from experience, businesses strive for "the customer is always right" code. But guess what? Shit happens. And when it does, most businesses work to rectify problems. It makes a huge difference if the customer works with the business too. If not, in addition to the customer being angry, the business may not want you as a customer anyway. So keep that in mind next time you aren't happy with the service you've received. Please note I am not speaking specifically for Elan here. read more

I've stored and cleaned my furs at Barth Wind Elan Furs for as long as I've lived in the area - about 30 years. Anna, the owner (for many, MANY years) is simply fabulous! She is so low-key, never pushy, and ALWAYS willing to do accommodate the customer and go the extra mile! She has great taste, is honest, and gives great value and excellent customer service. Not to mention, she's just a delightful person! I had an older raccoon coat that I brought in, debating whether to update it or not. She could have told me that I should do it, as it could have been a nice profit for her. Instead, she honestly told that give the fur type and style of the coat, it probably wasn't worth it. I appreciated how direct and forthright she was, and that she wasn't just out to make a profit. Also, some time ago I came in with my mother's ranch mink coat. Another area furrier (who shall remain nameless) had told me that her coat was no longer in good shape; he'd pointed out some issues with it. He implied that I'd be best off trading it in for a new one. My mother was meticulous about caring for her furs, and only bought high quality garments, so I was rather surprised and dismayed to hear this. When I came to Barth Wind Elan, Anna told me the exact opposite - that my mother's fur was of the highest quality female pelts, and was quite valuable. The minor issues that the prior gentleman had pointed out were, in fact, easily correctable, small repairs; not indicative of poor maintenance, and most definitely not a major issue at all. I so appreciated Anna's honesty; I saw firsthand that she was about developing good customer relationships, and not just out to 'make a buck', unlike the other proprietor. From that day forward, she earned my trust, 100%. Barth Wind Elan picks up and delivers; they make it so easy and convenient for the customer. Also, I failed to mention that, with Anna's help, I made minor modifications to my mother's ranch mink coat, and it's just perfect for me! Her taste is impeccable! read more

I won't shop at Elan's again. I am storing at Saks Fifth Avenue now. Why? I'm a 83 year old cancer patient who bought a $7,000 or something mink when I now need $10,000 something for cancer meds and I'm compromising that I told the proprietor I only wanted to spend $2,000 on a fur, "ha". She pushed differently, and I know about pushy sales, as a leading sales person once, I did it myself,but I never exaggerated a pitch especially to a client I knew was on a limited budget as the proprietor knew of me. she told me she had a client who was a hundred and twelve years old and still went to work every day (huh?) and when asked to meet the client she didn't produce her. When I came into Elan's two years ago or so with my sister, and we were tense and it was obvious, the proprietor acted (amazingly quickly) on my distractible mood with my sister and used her pushy sales pitch, emphasizing her coat would last forever (as if an 81 year old cancer patient needs that). I'm treated with respect and professionalism at Saks. I'm staying with them and shopping alone. read more

My mother called Barth Wind Furs to tell them she was in the hospital/then nursing home and could not pick up her furs from storage. This was in January. The fur contract expired in February. I went to pick up the coats and they wanted to charge me an additonal $195 to pay for the coats. So we had to pay another years worth. I told the owner that I would pay for February (that we were one month late - but she would not budge and I had to pay for the additonal year. I have to admit I went crazy in the store. Very bad practice. DO NOT GO THERE! THEY ARE THE BIGGEST RIPOFFS AND TOOK ADVANTAGE OF A SR. CITIZEN! BAD BAD. read more
