First off, I am in restaurant manager, and I really cannot believe that the person who answered the phone actually said this to the person who made the reservation. I was a guest who attended, but the person who could not attend was my son's grandmother. The dinner was delicious, server was great, and I had just gotten in town so honestly I was out of it, and should have called the restaurant to see what could have been done... and as we sat next to an empty table next to us- the entire meal- with an extra chair that we could have pulled up for my sons grandma- it kind of appalled me that whomever was in charge at the host stand didn't think to ask a manager to try and accommodate. We were not a party of 10, and for a restaurant that's main demographic is family's and loyal locals, this is prett unacceptable. I don't like yelpers- but coming from management I really needed to leave this review, after we dropped close to $400 for my son's birthday and his mimi couldn't come. Most amazing sundae ever. Went the day before thanksgiving. I had called earlier in the day to see if I could get squeezed in and they did. I got the prime rib. The garlic mashed potatoes were so good. Prime rib was perfect. My husband got the strip steak with cowboy butter and it was amazing. First off, I reserved lunch for 3 at 12:45 since we were unsure if we could make it by 11:00. Fortunately we arrived early and explained everything and the hostess kindly sat us to a booth. If it wasn't for our waitstaff and bartenders attitude, I'd give our review 5 stars. The bartender and I got off to a bad start and didn't change throughout out 2 1/2 hour lunch. It took 30 minutes for our waitress to return to our table after water service. We finally ordered our cocktails, one never came so I went to the bar to ask if she had our last cocktail order. She rudely said she had no tickets and walked away. Long story, so moving on.....another 10-15 minutes later our waitstaff was flagged and we've been ready to order everything not knowing when we would see her again. We all had 3-4 pear martinis that are always delicious, the glass pear garnish is absolutely the best! The home smoked salmon appetizer was the best decision, cooked to perfection and no skimping on portions. We all had the sashimi tuna salad, another brilliant choice, if I could afford it, daily, I'd be there! Since we were celebrating a 70th birthday, we had a complimentary key lime pie, divine! Bartlett's is one of those places that isn't usually top of mind but I always walk away wondering why I don't visit more often. It's consistent, delicious and suitable for most occasions/groups. The menu is on the smaller side, for example, the current appetizer menu consists of only three items (spinach artichoke dip, smoked salmon and grilled artichokes). All are winners. On a recent visit, I wanted to order the grilled artichokes but I heard from the waiter that the latest shipment wasn't up to their quality standards so it was not offered that evening. Really shows the pride in the product and care that Bartlett's has for its customers. To me, the french dip is an absolute must order. I never go for french dips but Bartlett's version has me hooked - so soft, savory and satisfying. Ideally split it with a dining companion because it gets heavy. What a lovely venue for an outing with family! The atmosphere was nice, although I got eaten alive by mosquitos. Spinach and artichoke dip is very tasty. The tortilla chips are likely from a box. Salsa is pretty okay, not the most balanced for my taste but merely a matter of preference. The tortilla soup was rather lackluster - I guess it's best to stay clear from anything remotely ethnic in an American restaurant. The au jus was fantastic!! Bartlett's, previously Houston's, has been serving fine food in Austin since 1990. In 2010, the owner of the Austin location Tim Bartlett took the Austin location independent and renamed it Bartlett's. Sadly Tim died at the early age of 61 in 2013, and after a couple of ownership changes, the restaurant has made few changes and the current chef Arik has worked with Bartlett's for years prior to becoming Executive Chef. The food is always great; everything on the menu is well thought out and well executed with quality ingredients to work with. In the very rare instance that something goes wrong, believe me Bartlett's will make it right - and then some - example below. The food is heavy on the meat side, with some outstanding salads, but they're all paired with some sort of protein. So vegetarians, you'll be happy with some of the appetizers as well as the sides and of course salads minus the protein. It's not like you won't be eating well. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip as an appetizer, and it is outstanding. The artichoke dip is creamy and mixed with spinach, a hint of garlic, some sour cream and Reggiano cheese. The artichoke leaves were fresh and easy to eat. Also ordered the tortilla soup - don't miss it. It comes with chicken breast cut up and the broth is thick and cheesy with tortilla strips and avocado slices on top. This is not your typical soupy chicken tortilla soup, it's a thick and hearty chicken tortilla soup. The salads are also outstanding, of note is the Grilled Chicken Salad and the Asian Noodle Salad with Beef Tenderloin. All the meats are grilled over an open flame as opposed to frying, which adds an outstanding hearty taste for every dish. The Grilled Chicken Salad has charbroiled chicken breast, thinly sliced on top of mixed greens with a honey lime vinaigrette and peanut sauce dressing with tortilla chips on top. Wow. First time I ever ate this salad I sat at the bar and ordered one and it was so good I actually ordered and ate another one. I think they serve it in heaven and you never get full. Same with the Asian Noodle Salad - the dressing is spot on, the beef tenderloin prepared perfectly and mixed well with the thick noodles in the salad. The salad has mango, peanuts, avocado, Thai herbs and an Asian dressing. You can order either of these dishes with or without protein. For dinner, I ordered the 100 Hour Marinated Ribeye and my dining companion ordered the Applewood Smoked Pork Chip. The 100hr Marinated Ribeye is one of the best steaks I've ever eaten. The ribeye is a thin cut, and at 14oz plenty to eat but not too much. The marinade has pineapple, soy sauce, ginger, and garlic and is great. Even though it's marinated for 100 hours, it does not break down the protein in the steak and it's still meaty. There's a little note on the menu about this steak that they only make so many and when they are sold out, they are gone. I have been to Bartlett's once way too late for my normal dining pleasure (about 8:30PM), and I was told that they just sold out for the evening ...horrors! I jokingly asked if they had a 90 hour marinated ribeye available...ha-ha, no. But the manager came over in the middle of our meal to apologize and asked how our dinner was and of course it was great and gave me a card for a free 100 hour marinated ribeye the next time I came in. Now that's class and that service.The Applewood Smoked Pork Chop was also outstanding, brined in orange and vanilla mixture, and served with a delicious red onion jam. All entrees are served with sides, and there is no issue with substitutions. As a matter of fact, I ordered a side salad for my ribeye and I asked for the grilled chicken salad without the chicken as the greens and dressing are great. There are several desserts on the menu as well as a secret hot fudge sundae, which is seasonal. If it's in stock, ask for it. You get a huge bowl of ice cream with sundae fixings and a pitcher of hot fudge. The Apple Walnut Cobbler is also outstanding, served warm with vanilla ice cream. The cobbler is not too thick and the apples are sautéed in a brown sugar mixture. The Key Lime Pie is also great, tart and bright. The ambience at Bartlett's is very clubby and romantic. It has dark brown woods, with a softly lit dining space and soft lit lights at every table. The dining room is so well appointed that unlike most other restaurants where you can't seem to hear yourself think when it's full, Bartlett's is just the opposite. The bar can get loud because it gets full while people are waiting for dinner, but that's what a bar is. The service was brisk and professional with at least three people waiting on you at your table. I highly recommend Bartlett's for a special occasion or any occasion where you want to splurge ; it's a bit on the pricey side, but I'm a firm believer in ' you get what you pay for', and the value for what you pay at Bartlett's is outstanding. read more

TLDR: All the good things you're reading about this place below are true. Worth it, especially if you have the $ to splurge. All right...after several years of hearing about this place, I finally went. And dang, was it good! The thing that tipped me over to try them was a dish that is vanishingly rare here in Texas: fire-roasted artichokes! And they do them correctly - with a nice smoky, fire-roasted flavor, sea salt, and lots of olive oil. Treat yourself and try this if you like artichokes in any manner. The hickory cheese burger is similarly amazing. The use of steak trimmings in the burger patty is easily evident as the flavor of the beef is front and center. Highly recommend this if you like hamburgers or your pocketbook is allergic to pricey steak. :-) Service is excellent, and they provide a warm towel service if you have the artichokes or the ribs. (I hear that you can request it, however.) Definitely one of my all-time favorite restaurants in the Austin area. Everything a steak house should be. Their ambience is romantic and quiet enough for conversation while still being large enough to have lots of space for everyone and not feel overly exclusive. The service was friendly and attentive - they even split our sandwich into two plates when we told them we were sharing. The food was delicious. We ordered: The French dip with shoestring fries The brined pork chop with wilted spinach The pear martini The orange blossom bourbon daisy The key lime pie French drip was flavorful, perfectly cooked, and delicious. The shoestring fries were on point and actually shoestring (I can't tell you how often people mislabel that and bring out normal fries)! Sat at the bar, for the first time. The bartenders are attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. Wine list is amazing. Beer list was adequate. Hard liquors also great variety. Now the food is definitely something to enjoy! Split the Famous French Dip Sandwich Au Jus (perfect portions split for lunch). The bartender with no hesitation took the order with no mayo and the bartender even went and got fresh horseradish instead of the cream horseradish. Seemed like many locals were meeting up for lunch. I've been going to Bartlett's since it was Houston's most recently for a small birthday dinner and can honestly say I'm never disappointed with the service or the quality of the food. The management is very friendly and the service is great. Servers are all very friendly, knowledgeable of items and attentive as in filling water glasses but not to the point it's overkill. Atmosphere is what I consider to be a very classic steakhouse restaurant. It's dimly lit for added ambiance and very comfortable with both booth and table seating. I'd recommend it as a great place for a nice date night meal, a birthday or just a nice lunch or dinner. They also have a great bar area, for those looking for a place you can have nice drink and an appetizer or dinner. If you're looking for a place to dine solo but don't want to sit in a booth or table you can sit at the bar and they will take good care of you. They do serve walk-in's but I do recommend making reservations if you plan on going for lunch or in the prime evening hours say 7 pm - 9pm and especially on weekends and near holidays as they can be busy. As for the food goes, I know it may sound strange considering it's a steakhouse but trust me on this one, they make an amazing veggie burger the absolute best I've ever had with shoestring fries and I ask for the garlic sauce for dipping it's amazing and by far the best in Veggie burger in Austin as far as I'm concerned. The table is drilled to the floor so there's no way to move the table. Anyways, we waited for that booth for about 20min. We then, we're welcomed by our waitress, I forgot to ask her name but she was not friendly or kind at all. I remember my first time I went to Barnetts we were given hot towels to clean our hands, this time she went straight to get our order. We had to ask for water because she didn't even offer it. We ordered our food salmon, steak and a side of broccoli, our food took a while to get out. We waited for our food for about 20min, and our waitress didn't even come once to check on us, I was still missing my drink. We called one of the other waiter and he kindly gave us more water and brought my missing drink. Mind you our original waitress was nowhere to be found. Anyways, we then got our food it was delicious, the salmon was perfectly cooked and moist, the spinach it was too much for me. And the broccoli was the star of the lunch. We didn't order dessert. Overall, we had an okay experience, I had been telling my husband that Bartlett's was a nice steakhouse and since we were celebrating our anniversary it seemed like a nice choice for us.
