The tile walls, gold chapels, Greco ceiling were ornate & spectacular. There are tours in English & other languages along with a museum. It originally was a shrine that housed relics. Sao Roque (1295-1327) was canonized for his healing of plague victims and his feasts day commemorated on the 16 August. After Sao Roque's death he became a symbol for the protection from the Black Death plague which ravaged much of Europe. King Manuel I of Portugal believed that a relic from Saint Roque would protect Lisbon and he constructed a small shrine to the west of Lisbon to house the relic. The holy relic provided little protection for Lisbon which suffered horrendously at the hands of the plague. But the church has remained spectacular.

Theres a part where you can walk by some glass cases and it has a sensor where it triggers a light to come on. When I walked into the room it was off. I continued to walk around and it remained off I was in there for about 5-10min before I walked in front of it. I finally made my way to the case and the light clicked on. I thought cool and looked at all the things then it turned off when I walked away and stayed off. Then when I revisited some of the things I was looking at before and the thing came back on while my back was to it. In my mind I thought finally someone else is in here with me. I turn around and nothing, then it turned off. It did this a few more times while I was in there theeeeeeen I decided fuck that I'm going to leave the room I'm not guna die today. Yes I can melodramatic sometimes, I've accepted this about myself. Lol some other weird stuff happened and I thought cool I get the point I'm leaving altogether. Lol overall they had some cool film stuff to view but this place is creepy.

Masses are held here, and tourists may tour for a fee (currently 7 euros per adult, 5 euros per child aged 7-12, and free for younger children) on most days of the week. The building consists of the Baroque-style main chapel, the High Chorus with stained-glass windows, the Transept with Romanesque vaults and a dome, the nine Gothic-style radiating chapels, the Patriarch's dressing room, the chapel of Bartholomew Joanes with Renaissance paintings, the Baptistery, and the sacristy that is not open to visitors. My husband has been inside fancier churches such as those in the Vatican, but Lisbon Cathedral is probably the fanciest church that I have ever entered. Our visit to the Santuario de Cristo Rei was great. The monument is a smaller version of the…read moremonument in Rio, Brazil. To get there from Lisbon, you have to take a short and affordable ferry to the city of Almada. Almada is a cool, much slower city, and more affordable. After arriving at the Almada port, you can get to the monument via taxi, tuk tuk, or walk. We chose to walk. Although it took us about 40 minutes, we were able to see the city. It should be noted the walk is hilly. Regarding the monument itself, it was very nice with excellent views of Lisbon, the bridge, and the waterway. For a fee (around $9 euros) and a several minute wait, you can also go to the top of the monument for an even better view.

It took us almost an hour of waiting and 75 steps to get to the top. There are bars for your…read moreprotection. Purchase tickets before you wait in line on a separate building right when you park . There are steps to get to the aouvenir shop where there's an elevator to get you down. Despite the waiting (-1 star) - it was worth the wait.

One of the most beautiful buildings from the outside in all of Portugal is the adjacent Jeronimos…read moremonetary. This church, like all Catholic Churches in Portugal can be visited for free. In addition to hosting the tomb of famous explorer Vasco de gamma it is notable for its soaring ceilings and arches and the elephants seen around the inside, ancient symbols of power. As a gothic style church it is quite austere and has a solemn contemplative feeling with dim lighting. As Lisbon is getting more touristed, when we arrived around opening time, 10 am, we were behind several large bus-tour groups. While there is no fee to enter, they do control the crowds by metering the number of people at a time. We spent no more than 20 minutes inside and we had the benefit of a private guide who explained important features of the structure and architecture. Definitely worth a short visit. Come later in the day, say 4 or 4:30 for smaller crowds.

I attended the mass already and I walked around the church. I recognized him. He was the one lighting the candle at the beginning of the mass. He was by the other exit door on my way out and there was a door open so I was trying go around that way so I will end up where I came from. I understand at times they don't want visitors but someone already inside the church, & attended mass. I didn't feel like arguing with him. I don't know if it is just me or the churches I attended near where I was from, there are visitors coming in during mass. They do welcome visitors. If they wanted to leave they leave quietly. Aside from that man's attitude, it is a beautiful church.

It was certainly an inspiration. The church interior is magnificent. The architecture of this building built in the 1500's is very interesting. We also had an opportunity to visit the convent next door. There is a Diorama set up the Corpus Christi procession. Every religious order of the day is represented by full color figures. The side walls are almost completely covered with the Portuguese blue tiles. It is spectacular to see.

When checking out and reviewing the palaces we could check out in Sintra, I didn't really see too…read moremany people talking about Monserrate Palace. I looked at pictures online and the architecture looked pretty nice, so I decided that it was worth seeing while we were here - a decision that I'm glad I made. After visiting Regaleira in the morning, we took an Uber here. You can also take the bus but we were on a time crunch and decided an Uber was pretty worth it. It's honestly not that expensive so I'd even recommend that option. This palace is pretty far from the rest of the mainstream castles and palaces like Pena, Moorish, and Regaleira so a bus would definitely take some time. We had already pre-purchased our tickets online so they scanned it from our phones and off we went. Even thought the line for buying tickets was nonexistent there, I totally recommend doing this as you get a small discount from buying online beforehand. We headed straight for the palace. It truly is one of the underrated palaces. It's no Moorish Castle as it's not big nor grand, but it's quaint and charming in its own way. There's way less people here so it's not as chaotic, and you could take nice pictures. It has a beautiful hallway, and I absolutely love the ceilings. Always remember to look up at these types of structures because the ceilings may surprise you with beautiful designs. Aside from the palace, the garden is also nice to walk around for a bit. Again, I like how quiet and peaceful it was compared to the other castles and palaces. It felt serene to walk around the park. The lawns were so green and lush. There were a few ponds as well as mini waterfalls. Although, the gardens are definitely skippable if you're on a time crunch. I don't think it's an absolute must-see, but if you have the time, I would definitely recommend a stop at this palace. As a tourist, you're only here once right?

There are Cenotaphs of famous people from Portugal in several places. You can go upstairs and step out on balconies and get great views of the entire area. There is also a museum on the 3rd floor that gives you a look into the first president after the Monarchy was dissolved. this is a must see if you want to learn about the history of the country
