Amazing food bursting with flavors. I tend to get the Thai Basil with Beef. It's amazing. I think about it and my mouth waters. lol. They've hired some new waitresses so the atmosphere is a lot friendlier and they're very attentive. I usually order to-go but the place is small and comfortable. In the almost 5-7 years that I have been coming to Basil House, I have never been disappointed. Stick with the R2 (spicy fried rice) and you'll definitely have a great meal and have leftovers. Pissed. This was probably one of my favorite places to go to in Texas city. Usually go on lunch. Went today and ended up finding a medium size roach in my pho of meatballs..... disgusted.... my boss told me couple years back, her husband and her saw an employee pour back the rice they didn't end up eating back into the pan. But I thought I would over look it since they had new management and it was years back. But noooo. A roach in my pho.. when I confronted the manager he said if I would want anything else??!!! First visit and most certainly not the last! We had the Thai Lettuce Wraps which were SO good. It is plenty big enough to be a meal, which we were unaware of before ordering. We both ordered Pho, and the chef was very accommodating to pan fry up some tofu for me instead of beef (a preference for me). The tofu was cooked perfectly. I grew up in Galveston County, and every time I visit them it is mandatory that we make a trip to Basil House. It is amazing that such a place exists in the cultural wasteland of Texas City - Where restaurants like Casa Ole and Fortune Chinese Restaurant have been open most of my life... if for no other reason than the chemicals in the air have burned all the taste buds off the tougues of the locals. But I digress... Basil House is as good as any Thai restaurant I've had, and much better than most. The wait staff isn't the fastest, but I'm not trying to have someone hanging around my table anyways. The only thing I have had I didn't like was the vermicelli noodle bowl that comes with the golden curry... that is a fluke, but everything else is top-notch. Fresh and GOOD! And BTW, I couldn't imagine anyone acting like Carley in a restaurant would be happy with anything they'd ever get. Why anyone would order something and try to alter the basic recipe is beyond me. When I ordered I told the waitress several times I could not have ANY fish sauce or fish anything on my food. When it came out I could smell fish on it. I asked her about it and she said it didn't have fish sauce on it. I asked her to tell me exactly what was used and she said soy sauce and spices. I asked her what else and she said Oyster sauce. I told her that oyster sauce has anchovies in it and that I couldn't eat it. She started to argue with me saying oyster sauce wasn't fish sauce. I explained to her that I couldn't eat the food with anchovies on it and anchovies are fish. She offered no solution and continued to argue. So I left having not eaten and upset. I do not recommend this place and they are over priced. read more

My husband and I are continuously on the hunt for the best Thai food in the Houston area, which covers a lot of ground. My husband spent many years living in Thailand so he knows authentic when he tastes it and this is it. We ate there last night and had the best Larb, Thai fried rice, Red Curry w/chicken, and Pad Kee Maw (drunken noodles) I have ever eaten...yes, we ate a lot. The chef masterfully executes the beautiful balance of sweet, sour, salty, and hot that is Thai food. Beware, though, that you must ask for the dishes to be 'Authentic Thai'. They offer Americanized versions of each dish which I think is a mistake. Funny thing was, we almost didn't go in because it is a pretty rundown looking place. Don't let that stop you...it is VERY clean. They don't serve alcohol, but you can BYOB. We will be returning often. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to eat the best and most authentic Thai food in the Houston area...hands down. read more

And so I just got out of Basil House just now, carrying a to-go box with my left over. 1 lunch serving seems to be good for 2 people. At least for me. They have the most delicious soup in town, I loved the orange chicken, and their salad with some peanut sauce on it or whatever they call it. My husband and I are impressed with the food quality and taste, the ambience, the excellent customer service, and the price. My husband and I paid 28usd only for the entire lunch which includes the Thai tea, full course, and dessert. Will be back there for sure. read more

Hole in the wall Thai/Viet restaurant where AC isn't used. Found that my chopsticks had already been opened and I'm quite sure they recycle rice too. However, this is Texas City we're talking about. You won't find better than this. Turn a blind eye and stick to noodle dishes. I recommend ordering to go in the Summer, because it gets hot! Gave it another chance. Used to love this place, but it has greatly declined in the last few years. They changed staff, maybe owners. The food is not as flavorful as it used to be. Tastes like they started using a lower grade beef for the soups and stir fry, very bad quality. Too bad, used to be a good place. read more

Hole in the wall type of authentic place. Been here once with my husband recently. I tried the green curry which was AWESOME and my husband had pad see ewe which wasn't the greatest. i have eaten lots of thai food, all over the U.S. Although i love thai food, many of the good thai resturants are either expensive and have a sort unrelaxed, uncomfortable atmosphere. the food at basil house, is absolutely top notch, the best thai food i've ever had. everything is good. i've eaten there dozens of times and never get sick of it cause there are so many different dishes to try. everything is simple and tasty. my favorites include the green curry with eggplant and mushrooms, the creamy red curry, and the hot and sour soup with mushrooms and tofu. its a good place for vegetarian/vegan customers like myself, as nearly everything on the menu can be altered to substitute meat with tofu. it is a small family owned restaurant and the owners are wonderful people. most items are around $10 a plate and although its not the cheapest its, its amazing for the quality. read more

I frequent this restaurant at least once a week, and have tried about 3/4 of the menu. Everything has always been wonderful! Each dish has its' own flavor and the vegetables are fresh and not overcooked. The wait staff are very attentive without being obtrusive, and my drink glass is never empty. I came here specifically for the thai lettuce wraps. When unread the description it was exactly what I had been looking for in the Houston area. Most Thai places call this dish "Nam, or nam tod" but the description was the same. Was so excited to find a place that made this dish, I drove out of my way for it! When I ordered I made sure to ask the waitress to make the dish with extra crispy rice (as I love the crispy rice) as well as extra extra spicy. Food came out and I took my first bite. NO FLAVOR. NONE WHATSOEVER. Also the rice was not crispy at all it was soggy . To say I was disappointed would be an extreme understatement. I couldn't possibly finish the entire dish with completely bland food at a Thai restaurant. I flagged down my waitress since she didn't bother to come over and asked her if she would bring me some Thai Peppers as well as some lines so that I could season this dish myself. She brought over some red oil with pepper flakes in it as well as some limes. I asked her for some fresh Thai peppers instead of the oil. The waitress was very helpful and brought me everything. I squeezed the limes in the fresh Thai Pepper's into the dish as well as some of the red oil. The dish tastes somewhat better but still not as great as I had hoped. I was so disappointed I didn't want to try anything else. The portion that was given to me was pretty great for the price , but what good is quantity when you don't like what you're eating? Don't think I will be returning here. Hopefully I'll find a better place that serves this dish. read more
