Veggie Thai Noodle Soup: For under 7 bucks you get a huge bowl of soup loaded with noodles, sprouts, chives, tofu, multiple kinds of mushrooms, and bok choy. The broth has nice Asian spices and I tasted a little citrus in the heat that woke my taste buds up. It was delicious. Tofu Chow Fun: Nice portion loaded with veggies. I tasted a little peanut flavor in the heat. Not over spiced at all. The veggies were cooked perfectly as were the noodles. The tofu is fried and then added in. Makes for a nice texture change. If I wasn't so full from the giant bowl of soup I might have finished my Chow Fun. Think the Chow Fun was around 7 dollars. My entire bill was only 15 something and I had a Thai Ice Tea as well. I stopped in around 3:30 in between lunch and dinner. Place was empty. Hostess/cashier was very friendly and more than willing to help me decide what to order. I could tell the chef and the hostess were talking about me so I gave them a thumbs up. The chef ask her to ask me about the food and I happily told the hostess to thank the chef for a very nice meal. I'll definitely will be back there soon. Man, oh man. I did not realize this place existed until a couple of weeks ago. What a travesty. I live a few blocks away. How did I not know about this place? This restaurant is super great for a quick bite. The wonton noodle soup is an awesome option for the dead of winter. The over-rice platters are so unctuously satisfying. The steamed buns are certainly not the best, but I don't think anywhere else in New Haven offers any real competition either. All in all: solid solid solid. It's a super casual restaurant, and there are tons of options on the menu ranging from noodles and rice to vegetables and soup. I wouldn't say that any particular item is done exceptionally well, but everything I have tried has been pretty good and Basil is definitely a solid choice for Asian food in New Haven. My new favorite restaurant. The food was exquisite! Subtle delicious flavors!! YUMMM!! It's BYOB, which was kind of a bummer bc I didn't know and would've liked a glass, but they let me know as soon as I walked in and made up for it in service. This is cheap food wow. If you're a college student this place is so ideal!! Nothing was over $10 it was insane. I got the vegetable lo mein and it was a hearty portion that came out only a few minutes after ordering. The service was not only quick but the staff was incredibly friendly and efficient. The food was overall good but not great. It tasted essentially like every other take out Chinese food I've ever gotten, and it was clear that it was not made fresh. However for like $7 I'll take it. I love the food at Basil. It's fairly light - feel good after eating there. It's cheap. The portions are not huge. Very casual, clean dining room. They now do delivery from Uber. Takeout is super fast. I like that if you get soup, they pack the noodles separately from the broth so they don't overcook. The menu is mostly Thai with some classic American Chinese dishes and some more authentic dishes. Basil has my favorite coconut curry noodle soup in New Haven (and there are a lot of choices!). Very seldom do I write bad reviews for a restaurant as I used to work in the food industry. I know how fast paced it is and I know how easy it is to forget things, but today I ordered from Basil for the first time through UberEats. I ordered a vegetarian drunken noodle and a chicken drunken noodle. My vegetarian dish was very obviously cooked with the meat dish, such that there were scraps of chicken mixed into my noodles to the point that it was inedible to me. Thankfully my meatless diet isn't due to religious reasons or allergies, but what if it was? Kind of ruined my day and my perception of the restaurant. Sloppy presentation. Nice little place to hit up when you're cruising around New Haven! My wife and I have really been hurting for some good, cheap Thai food since leaving Chicago - We found it!!!!! I had some really yummy steamed pork dumplings, then some Tom Yum Seafood Soup with rice noodles. FINALLY with some good, but very complex heat! This was a win all day! and a huge bowl to boot! My wife had the Yellow Curry w/ vegetables. and brown rice. Also very good! So glad we just took a little chance and went in. The Thai food here is very good, I've only gotten delivery, but their pad see ew, panang curry, and spring rolls are all delicious. However, I would stay away from their chinese food. Recently, I ordered won ton soup and vegetable fried rice. Both tasted the same - like MSG. After effects of my meal was extreme dehydration. Where to start? How anyone can knock this place is just as mind numbing as trying to understand a positive review of Ivy Noodle. Since their prices are on par with Ivy Noodle and a block away...coupled with the fact that they are open later than most (midnight on weekends). lets simply compare it to that. And in that respect: Basil is a godsend. My first time there I immediately had a great feeling about it right from the start. I got the red sauce chicken curry extra spicy with brown rice and was very pleased. When you consider what that $6/7 will do for me at Ivy Noodle, or even Great Wall (buffet) for that matter... its down right gourmet. I don't know what the other reviewer got, but this was Clean food, Not greasy in the least. The shredded pork with preserved veggies was also delicious, clean, flavorful and cheap. The next time, we got Shanghai dumplings and those were also pretty legit. A lot of these Yalies seem to be oblivious to money issues and will compare a $6 curry to a $13 curry at some other 'more authentic' Thai place, because it's all the same to them, just a drop from the endless parental bucket. For a poor dude like myself, this is a primary factor in my appreciation of a place. Someone tell me where my $6 would be better spent? In a year a half here, I haven't found it. This is not a place I go to have a 'dining experience'. This is a quick and awesome alternative to the shit hole next to my apartment. This is one of those cheap college restaurants. It has the essentials you could want for a very low price. They're also very quick and efficient without having terrible service. I stuck to the traditional Yellow Curry with rice this time around. The curry was pretty good, nothing too spectacular but of decent quality. I wouldn't take a friend who's visiting New Haven, but if you're in need of a quick cheap place to grab some dinner after studying (that isn't fast food), I would stop by here. Pork buns and Kirin beer can make anyone's day, especially if it's your birthday. I lived pretty close to the Yale area and was all about the restaurants. I can honestly say I had visited every single one except for Basil. I was extremely partial to Ivy Noodle and didn't think I would care for this new place. That's when my brother told me to get over myself and just try it. I'm so glad I did! He suggested we go to this place since I'm really into eating a lot of food for a good price. I really wanted to go to Ivy Noodle (now Ivy Wok), but he swore up and down that this place was good. Can't say no to him, plus, he was paying. It was amazing. Pork buns! Pork buns! My first time ever eating a pork bun and I fell in love. Fried rice! Nice servers. Everything I would want to eat in a lifetime, I ate that day. I even went back the next day with my parents and sister. Mom wasn't too happy about me drinking, but she had a few sips herself and liked the beer. A lot of people compare Basil to Ivy Wok (formerly Ivy Noodle), but I think it's a waste of time. Both places have great flavours and their own kind of charm. For the most part, Basil is your quintessential casual college restaurant when Ivy Noodle becomes too dingy and you're getting sick of 1am pizza from Yorkside or A1. That doesn't mean they do an excellent job. setting: at least it's clean. cups are plastic and worn--same of the forks. service: they're usually understaffed if you catch them during rush hour. expect to put in an order, get the order, and then get your check. There won't be much attention in between and it's hard to wave a staff member over. Also, keep in mind that your food will not be coming out in any specific order. If your entree is done before your appetizer....too bad hope you like eating the main course first! food: simply ok. their food leans on the saltier side, which I like, but am willing to admit isn't canon. Don't do the soups here...it tastes like water to me. And especially don't do the seafood soup unless you enjoy a mountain of the fake lobster/crab sticks. You're much better off going for anything on top of rice or their fried noodles and rice selection. The things about that is they have really good sauces and in general it's hard to mess up fried noodles. My friends love the curry here but I've yet to try any so I can't quite vouch for it. If you're looking at the dim sum portion...it's not too bad. It definitely beats out York St. Noodle's miniature pops. Pretty tasty. Drink: avoid the bubble tea at all costs. The pearls are never the right consistency...does no one taste this before serving?? Get thai iced tea without the pearls if you must. Dessert: They have cute creative desserts but it's all prepacked and premade. If you've no qualms about it, have a field day. They're fun to share. This place is run by the restauranteer of Kari (which appears to be closed now--bummer!). So what I normally do is to order things that I used to have at Kari, mainly their curry noodle soups and the Rendang (also, don't forget the Roti). Oh yummy goodness! I don't know why people keep saying that the portions are small. I saw people eating rice combo plates that were huge. And the noodle portions are the same as what East Melange used to serve. And who can argue with the price? The service is very friendly and efficient, but when I went, they were really busy and obviously needed one more staff. I am taking one star off for my bubble tea. For some reason, the bubble teas are more like bubble shakes because they blend the tea with ice and then put the balls in. You know what happens to the tapioca balls when you do that? They freeze. Tonight, I tried the Indonesian Bihun Goreng ( stir fried rice noodle ) with shrimp...Admittedly, I have a few favorites dishes, but this dish is in my top 3!!!! Stopped by here for dinner on Sunday on the way to MA. We were skeptical because there was no one in there around 7ish/8pm on a Sunday night, but everything was excellent! We got an avocado bubble tea, mango juice, roti kanai, Chinese eggplant with salty fish, and beef massamun curry. The Roti Kanai would be my least favorite dish of all, because the size was so small, and the curry dip only had one tiny piece of potato. I prefer the one at Penang in NJ. The Chinese Eggplant had a vibrant purple color, the dish had pieces of chicken, and the crispy pieces of salty fish were just amazing! The Massamun Curry was good too, not too creamy, not too watery...just the right consistency! I can't speak to how their other dishes were (like the noodles that others have tried), but I'd be willing to go back! read more

I ordered the Tom Yom vegetarian soup and was quite pleased. Great serving size, flavorful, and chock full of veggies. AND at $5.95-- a steal. Considering that we were thinking of going to Miya sushi where a small miso is $4... yeah. STEAL. My amigos ordered a noodle dish and another soup-- btw you choose your noodle with your soup. I got the glass/thin noodle and it paired perfectly with my Tom Yum. My friend ordered the spicy beef with a thick udon that he enjoyed very much. Like everyone else has said, this place has great prices and delicious food. I think someone even mentioned a desire to drink the massaman curry with a straw, which I wholeheartedly agree with! My girlfriend and I ate at Basil's last night, and yes, it was delicious. Great vegetarian options too. The Thai Tea and Thai coffee were less sweet than we've had at other restaurants (a nice change), and the tea was far better than the coffee. We tried two small appetizers, a soup, and two entrees in all. Portions are great for the price and I'm a frugal guy who likes to eat! The ingredients in our dishes were fresh but more importantly they were hot off the stove - a BIG plus in my book. All of our dishes were excellent and collectively we decided that the massaman curry dish was our favorite. The restaurant was clean, and while full of people (mainly Yale students on the swimming and hockey teams,) there was no wait to sit down. Because the place was busy, it was particularly loud. We ordered red curry and drunken noodles and both were great. We had another noodle dish that I thought could have been better -- It was a thicker noodle and was 6.95, and I can't remember the name, but its reason I put this rating at 4 and not 5. Also why it's at 4 was that the dumplings were more chinese style and a thicker dough that I didn't like-- would have preferred thai style. read more

Basil is one of these places that my friends go to after the gym for some quick authentic Chinese food that's both good and cheap. I've had many a feast there and enjoyed myself greatly. I'm a big fan of the place and here's why. Pros: 1. You can get tasty legit dim sum here. And not just dim sum like dumplings. I mean lo bak go (turnip cake), siu lung bao (soup-filled dumplings), and chasiu bao (roast pork buns). It's one of only two places in New Haven that I know of that serves them. They are also the only restaurant that I know of in New Haven that serves mayo shrimp with walnuts. It sounds really gross if you've never had it... but, it's an awesome dish. Super tasty and I highly recommend it. 2. The food is cheap like you'd expect from a good Chinese place in NYC (except this is in CT). For $15 I can give myself diabetes in under 30 min. :D 3. There are a lot of different types of foods to choose from. If you're in the mood for thai, they have a bunch of different types of curries to try including massaman curry. They also have soups and rice dishes. One of my favorites is the "three meat" rice dish, which is just three different types of meat over rice with veggies. 4. The staff are super nice and very attentive. Water gets refilled fast and they are always smiling. 5. You can eat somewhat healthy here. You can choose to get brown rice instead of white rice with your food and you can also order veggies like bok choy and choy sum. Friends of mine who watch their carbs usually order the choy sum with chicken satay and some brown rice and it's delicious. Cons: 1. Their bubble tea is not the greatest I've ever had. I don't know what it is, but it's just not that great. :( 2. This is petty, but a personal peeve of mine is that they have watermelon juice listed on the menu, but NEVER EVER actually have it available. This makes me very sad. Based on other Yelper reviews we decided to hit Basil. We have been looking for a cheap Malaysian place in central CT and since there really was not a lot to choose from we said ok to this Asian fusion place (Cantonese, Malaysian, Thai, Japanese, etc). I think they are Cantonese because... I understand their language! (maybe Chinese-Malaysian?) The best apps were turnip cakes (fried and crispy outside- almost as good as those in dim sum places but too moist in center so these fell apart with chopsticks), Shanghai dumplings (juicy inside but no soup dumplings on menu) and roti with curry dip. Scallion pancakes were overcooked and squished flat and dry. Avocado boba tea was very refreshing and creamy. Like nothing I ever drank before. I did not like the huge grape-like bunch of boba at the end. Like boba poop. I would have preferred to just drink avocado milkshake. Crispy pan fried noodles (Cantonese dish) had like two small shrimps with tails in it with lots of bok choy. However, noodles were very crispy and tasty. Their famous dish is the salty fish, chicken and Chinese eggplant casserole in clay pot. I am used to the pow of the salty fish but non-Asians may find it too salty. The beef redang in clay pot was the highlight of the entrees because the beef were soooo tender and I wanted to drink the sauce with the boba straw! Indonesian mee goreng with pork was ok but it looked like pork lo mein. Chow tueh teow was tasty with broad flat noodles and bean sprouts just like chow fun but with different spices. The ma po tofu had a tasty spicy sauce but the peas and carrots were probably from Birdseye (off putting). I prefer Hao Sichuan's Chengdu version. The prices were very reasonable for the mid sized plates. You would definitely pay more for the big platters you get in Chinatown. 6 dishes with 4 apps among us 7 persons were very reasonable for $137. No wonder the place was packed with Yalies!
