Basilica di San Marco or the St. Mark's Basilica is dedicated to St. Mark, the patron saint of the city and a house for his relics. This is without a doubt the most important religious site in the city of Venice. At the time of our visit, there was construction on front of the building, but it was still beautiful. It is a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture with Gothic influences. There was so much incredible detail that went into every inch of the building. I did not get to go inside but the outside was already impressive. A great spot for photos. read more

The focal point for the Piazza San Marco, The church is quite a structure. Be forwarned, buy your tickets ahead of time of wait in a ridiculous line. Venice, much like Florence, is all about the lines. The interior is spectacular and the views of the Piazza is fantastic from the upper reaches. The main issue I had and yes it petty is that unlike the Mosques there is a charge or int his case multiple charges once you get in to say head near the altar etc. This drives me nuts. Beautiful cathedral that's a popular tourist draw. You can book a tour beforehand to skip the line, or you can wait to enter. It's 3 euros per person to enter and both cash and credit card are accepted. There's a separate entry charge to go up the stairs to the roof (7 euros) and another separate fee to go into the Gold section (Pala d'Oro) (5 euros). There's a rope that delineates the section where you can walk around. We went around 10am and it was about a 40 minute wait to enter. Numerous online guides suggest getting there earlier rather than later to spend less time waiting in the queue. I would suggest having one party hike your spot in line and going to take photos while waiting, as there are a lot of sights to see. There is an active community that prays here too. Make sure your shoulders and knees are covered, otherwise there are scarves for purchase from the street vendors. Lockers are located in a different building. read more

We toured St Mark's as a prearranged after hours group tour. The tour starts at 9pm and you enter the church after dark. Our tour guide, Elena, was wonderful. She was born and still lives in Venice so she had lots of stories about local life on the islands. The lights are only on in the church for about 30 minutes during the day so to see it at night with all the lighting was very special. The mosaics sparkled in the lights. You enter the church through the typical exit. When you enter the main section of the church, the ceiling is dark. When all the tour groups are seated they dramatically begin to increase the lighting. There are so many scenes to behold. So beautiful. You go into the crypts as well and see the many arches and low ceiling. Definitely a must see. read more

Basilica is considered city' most important monument. It is dedicated to Saint Mark, patron of Venice, whose remains it's housing. It dates back to 11th century and it is beautiful showcase of Byzantine architecture. Impeccable marble floors and plethora of gold mosaics is the best way to explain it. Gold reliquaries are said to be brought by Venetian crusaders after Constantinople's fall. It is quite busy, actually the busiest attraction after Rialto bridge, so if you want to visit, make sure you reserve spot online, or you might spend up to an hour waiting in a line without any shade. We visited in May of 2024, before the start of busy season so it was not as busy. Still my favorite sight was during the sunrise hours. read more

Admission was 3. Euros but the line looked endless moving quicker than it looked. There was a lot of construction & repairs as the basilica was damaged during flooding in November 2019. We paid 6 more euros each Pala d'Oro is the high altar retable of the Basilica di San Marco in Venice. It is universally recognized as one of the most refined and accomplished works of Byzantine enamel, with both front and rear sides decorated. We paid 7 more euros to go into the museum filled with tile, art, fragments, sculptures, tapestries, models & a lot of info. We went above & below the basilica. The cathedral is the 3rd oldest, begun probably in 1063 to express Venice's growing civic consciousness & pride. Like the 2 earlier churches, its model was the 6th century Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople, it was adjusted to meet the needs of Venetian state ceremonies. read more

Beautiful and breathtaking. This basilica in piazza di San Marco is a must see while in Venice. We did a daytrip to Venice while on our vacation to Italy and this was our first stop. We didn't get a tour but we were able to go inside and see the beautiful architecture, the mosaic work along the walls and the domes. The views from outdoor terrace is amazing. Photos don't do justice you have to see it in person and take it all in. Venice has a special place in my heart now and I cannot wait to go back and actually stay for a few nights. Like most things in Europe (and all over) - heavy restoration is underway to the outside facade of the building - but the inside is resplendent in all its golden glory. For some reason, I did not make it inside this beautiful church during my last stay in Venice with my mother, this time, we booked tickets in advance, online, which included the additional tour/access to the Pala D'oro. I've seen a lot of churches in Europe at this point all across the continent and this is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. It is ancient, it is detailed, it is beautiful and sprawling. The outside is extremely ornate with tons of detailed statues and spires and the inside ceiling is basically covered in golden religious mosaic tiles. If you are in Venice, this is a must see. The lines to get inside are extremely long during the day and probably take an hour at least if you didn't purchase tickets in advance which is easily done online and you have a separate entrance for ticket holders where you can scan your phone 5 minutes before and after your stated ticket time. Highly recommend you do that - if we hadn't, my husband would never have stood in line to see it. lol. read more

I did Rick Steves' free audio tour. It was a good one. I forget how much admission was. The free audio tour made it more worthwhile. We were lined up before the place opened. We waited in queue maybe 10 minutes past opening. Not bad. It was difficult to see some things due to people in the way (inside) and construction/restoration work (outside). Not a must if you have a day in Venice, but if you're into Cathedrals or are around for 3+ days, sure, go for it. read more

It is a beautiful church, but there are so many in Europe. You can walk around inside for a few seconds and be finished because going anywhere else except for the main area requires a fee. It's impossible to review an incredible place like this, except to say you absolutely must go! I wanted to share some info here for people with mobility challenges--the stairs are ancient (obviously) which means they are uneven in the middle, so pay attention to where your feet are especially going down. And if you are afraid of heights like me, I still would encourage you to at least look out the door at the incredible view. I was holding on to the railing the whole time like an incredibly stressed barnacle, but it was definitely incredible. If you really can't bring yourself to do it, don't feel bad: the 4 actual bronze horses are kept inside to protect them, so you can see them closely. Finally, if you are reading this review you've already heard this a million times but be sure to cover your shoulders. This also applies to men and nonbinary people who are rocking an open shoulder look. Get a scarf (not entirely see-though, don't risk it like one unhappy woman on my tour) and you'll be fine. read more

The church was built in honor of St. Mark the evangelist, whose remains were stolen from their home in Alexandria, Egypt, and hidden in barrels of pork and cabbage leaves by a couple of crafty Venetians, intent on bringing him to rest in Venice. most renowned and famous building in Venice ( besides Rialto Bridge), St. Mark's Basilica is a sublime piece of architecture that has stood the test of time since its creation in 1092 and remains one of the most important religious buildings in Northern Italy. Four bronze horses that guard the entrance to thousands of square feet of mosaics to the Pala d'Oro. If you look closely at the church's center gable, you can see a statue of St. Mark along with Venice's emblem: a lion with wings. Forget the glittering gems at the Tower of London: The Royal Family has nothing on St. Mark's Basilica! The Pala d'Oro (Inside the basilica), a Byzantine altar screen of gold, is studded with hundreds of gems--literally. They include 1,300 pearls, 300 emeralds, 300 sapphires, 400 garnets, 100 amethysts, plus rubies and topazes. Wow now, this is something which British really wanna have in their museum ;) The bell tower in the same square was collapsed once, not so long ago. It collapsed in 1902 To be fair, it had survived several earthquakes before that. Although it buried the Basilica's balcony in the rubble, fortunately, the church itself was saved. The detail in the steeples of this church, the domes, so delicate, bold, yet exudes strength and beauty. It is an artisan's and architect's envy. It's structure is a true work of art. This is one of the most beautiful buildings I have seen, it truly is a work of art. The most famous of the city's churches and one of the best known examples of Italo-Byzantine architecture. Originally it was the chapel of the Doge, and has been the city's cathedral only since 1807 and its history being extremely intriguing. There is no admission cost for a tour unless you are going during a holiday or want to see special areas of the church such as the bell tower or treasury. We did purchase the tickets to see the bell tower, it is a significant climb up a very narrow stairway, but I think its well worth it. The interior and exterior are equally amazing, I was very impressed with the mosaics that span along the walls and the domes. I cannot say enough for the architecture and the care they put into preserving it. Feel free to sit down as long as you like and take it all in. Cheers! read more

There is so much music playing and there are so many sites to see. It's amazing and eye watering at the same time. I love the sound of bells, and that is the first thing I fell in love with​ my visit to Venice. The walk to the Basilica di San Marco was tricky if you are not familiar with the area since Google map app can be a bit confusing in times. However, it is fun to walk through all the narrow side streets. There is​ lots of window shopping and cafe or restaurants to choose from. I would recommend getting​ to the location either very early in the morning which would be less tourist, or by sunset​ to enjoy the view and it is just amazing. Please do watch out for your wallet, camera or purse from pickpocketers​​ in the crowd. So next time you are in Venice, just do what the Venetian do...find a nice spot, order a glass of spritzer​, listen to the church bells and have a good time! read more

This is one of the most beautiful churches in Italy and any pictures you see don't do the 24k gold mural glasswork justice. Plus photos and cell phones are strictly NOT allowed so please respect that and have some device free time for a hour or so to just take in the history and art. A must see inside is the "golden shovel" behind Saint Mark's body there is nothing else like it and the name...lol doesn't do it justice at all. Even if you don't go inside the Basilica there is a lot of historical art on the outside too! The large murals outside tell the story of how Saint Mark's body made it to Venice and there are many pieces of art and marble were taken from Constantinople after it's conquering. read more

The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark is a signature Church among many in Venezia. It is the most famous of the City's churches and one of the best known examples of Italy-Byzantine architecture. You can't miss it from the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, adjacent and connected to the Doge's Palace (which Gayle and I visited during our most recent visit), easily visible from the water, and with well marked directions in all the right places. The Chiesa d'Oro also expects modesty and no backpacks. So for the few times that I have entered the Church, the bag got checked nearby, shorts and flip flops were out, and Gayle needed covered up a bit more. There's also been a bit of a line, but it's worth the wait and the "Oh Wow" factor once you're inside. If you want to actually come here and attend Mass, there's a side entrance for that. read more

A must stop in Venice and one of the first things we did. Quite simply this is one of the most impressive buildings you will ever step foot in. I can only think of the Aya Sofya making an impression like this church does, and oddly enough, their design and bling are similar. The Basilica is open for prayer and there are areas open to the public to visit and a few that you need to pay to have access to. Of course, you are going to want to take some time to appreciate the spectacular mosaics of shimmering gold covering the ceilings. I also found the elaborately tiled floors pretty cool as well. Pay to see the Pala di Ora, covered with gold and jewels. The treasury hosts a lot of cool relics and even the skull of a former Doge. The museum gives you an even better view of the ceilings and one of the best of the square that you will have if you walk around the roof outside. In the museum you will find the original bronze horses that used to adorn the front entrance and have since been moved here. These Quadriga have been well traveled and were once stolen from atom the Hippodrome in Constantinople. As we were here during the winter, crowds were not much of a deal. However, it surely gets busy and you'd be well advised to plan our your visit. Dress like you are going to a church or you'll be asked to cover up. read more
