Ordered a pizza from here to-go on my way home from work. The staff was very friendly and quick! For the price and service I give this place 4 stars! I ordered the rosemary and potato wood-fire pizza. I wish it had more of a rosemary taste, however the potatoes were a nice/unique touch. In addition the pizza was not greasy, which in my opinion is a good thing! While waiting for my order to be finished I browsed by the dessert counter; both their cakes and cannoli looked amazing! Epic while unassuming!!! Had the chicken cacciatore. The sauce and peppers were epic! Chicken was moist and delicious. Salad was fresh and the dressing was perfect on it and the garlic bread had a delicious garlic scent without an overpowering taste and an exceptional marinara served with it. Our only regret that we had to travel and couldn't take the epic array of desserts with us. Definitely our new stopping place for lunch when passing through Fredericksburg!!! read more

This was our second visit, we stopped in for lunch two weeks ago and the food was phenomenal so we brought the boys tonight for dinner. The Chicken piccata was flawless with just the right amount of capers. The lasagna was rich and hearty, The Stromboli was huge!! And the fresh marinara was impeccable! We were a little disappointed with the size of the ravioli serving but it was delicious! Both boys couldn't say enough about how wonderful the Mac N Cheese was. And the dessert selection is vast and we chose the Oreo cake and the boys chose gelato.... outstanding and the gelato servings are generous. The only suggestion I would make is that the bread served with the salad is cold with no butter. Serving toasted buttered bread or warm bread with an oil and herb dip would round out an otherwise perfect meal! We will add Basillico's to our favorites and return often read more

Wow, this place expanded and added a huge bakery display. Had the turkey club. It was absolutely delicious. Loads of turkey, had some ham, and the bacon was flavorful. I got it on wheat bread - thick but fluffy. Even the mayo on the sandwich was yummy. Either I've been eating too much light mayo or they are using really good mayo. Had the mac and cheese side and they used spiral pasta. I added a little salt and I was happy with the mac and cheese. I thought it wasn't going to be as good but I'd order it again. Hubby had his usual sandwich. Forget what it was called but it had green olives in it. He said it was better than the last time he had it because they upgraded the bread on it. Yay for delicious bread at Basilico!!!! The dessert case looked AMAZING. We just had to take some dessert home because they looked so tempting. They even had bite size portions, like tiny fruit tart and pistacio canoli at a reasonable price. We had the lemon marscapone cake, which was recommended by another customer who was also deciding at the dessert case. Hubby absolutely LOVED it. We also had the hoho, which is a flourless chocolate cake rolled with lots of cream. It had a chocolate dipped strawberry on top. The cream wasn't overly sweet and was light. Oh and your food is served on these cute rectangular plates. I think when we were there two years ago, they served their sandwiches in baskets. But wow, what a difference the plating makes. We came on a Sunday at around 5pm. There were other customers in the dining area and there was no line at the cash register. Our food was brought to our table promptly. We will absolutely be back! Update: We came back a few more times (and will continue coming). Hubby loved the meat ball sandwich! I thought it had great sauce. We also tried the chickens salad sandwich, which had cranberries and almonds. Hubby thought it was very good but I would rather have my club sandwich or something else. I also tried a "make your own sandwich/sub/panini." Omg, I had a panini with sour dough, pastrami, American cheese, mayo, and grilled onions. So good! The onions were sweet. The pastrami was very delicious and hubby was very jealous of my sandwich. My pastrami sandwich was collosal huge!!! We also tried their gelato, which was very reasonably priced. For a small it was like $2. Amazing! The texture was great and they had flavors like pistacio, melon, hazelnut etc. Their display of gelato makes them so irresistable. I also tried their fried donut with hazelnut filling and the doughnut was dense. I had expected a lighter and flufflier dough. The hazelnut filling was yummy! My mother and I stopped in after her chemo appointment on recommendation for her nurse. I was very disappointed at the handicap parking. The parking spot was right in front of the wheelchair ramp. Who ever designed this was not using logic. However, after we were able to navigate her out of the parking lot and into the store things were looking up. I was surprised by the menu options and variety of items available. My mother ordered the Roast Beef Platter, this meal was huge! The roast beef was stacked on top of sour dough bread and smothered in rich well seasoned mushroom gray, the gravy also covered the real mashed potatoes included in the meal. I ordered the eggplant and roasted tomato panini with roasted red potatoes. The panini was crispy without being hard or over cooked and the cheese eggplant ratio was balanced perfectly. My only request would be to add a few extra roasted tomatoes, which maybe a personal choice. We boxed up half our meals to partake in bakery items. If you go and have to pick only one dessert item make it the Gelato! Not only is it well priced but it is hands down the best taking gelato I have ever eaten. I can recommend the cookies and cream, chocolate or banana. But next trip it is anyones guess which favor will win! read more

One of my favorite lunch spots in the burg, Basilico offers an excellent sandwich selection very similar to what you would find in a New York deli but you can also get some more hearty fare like pizza and cheesesteaks. You can then enjoy your meal in the open dining area that has an excellent ambiance. The large glass windows Italian inspired décor really make you feel at home even in the large space. As I sit here now the music is light and upbeat, a throw-back to the 30's and 40's maybe? The crown jewel of Basilico is most definitely their desert selection, the Gelato is superb and all the pastries are delicious and fresh. The cannolis are absolutely amazing and I am told they make them in house. In conclusion Basilico is an excellent lunch destination with a clean and bright space, delicious food, and the best desert in town. Head over on a bright spring day and take advantage of their outdoor seating to really experience all that they have to offer. read more

This is an amazing place- found them on Yelp. I ordered the potato rosemary pizza. It's out of this world. I've never had anything so unique and flavorful. All of the ingredients are fresh. My family tried another pizza, sandwich, and calzone. We tried the gelato too. Everything was spectacular. The restaurant was so clean and all of the staff was friendly and professional. If I could give this 4.5 stars, I would. This restaurant is one of the most original and delicious ones around. They have a great selection between sandwiches, paninis, pasta, and salads, and every single item on the menu is great. I personally love the Italian sub with roasted potatoes as a side. Aside from that, the most impressive and delicious part of the restaurant is the dessert selection that beckons for you in a glass display case as soon as you walk in. The deserts not only taste delicious but they are visually a work of art in themselves. They also have a wide gelato selection you can choose from. You must visit this stop, you will not regret it. Don't get me wrong-- I love Basilico's, but it's a bit overrated. Some of their menu items are lacking flavor and are overpriced for what you get. Their pizzas are probably the best thing that I've tried on their menu. Customer service is good here, the employees are all friendly and seem to enjoy their jobs. Save room for dessert! This place is hit or miss depending on who is cooking. The food in the case sometimes looks old and the pastries were stale even though they are supposed to have a pastry chef there. Third awesome visit here. Tried the meat lasagna. Most places I can't eat the lasagna since it usually has bell pepper- my kryptonite. Not here! Meat, sauce, cheese, pasta, and cheese. I like this place, reminds me of small delis like they have up North, NY, RI, Jersey...The breads all taste the way they are supposed to, sides vary but are all familiar flavors. Personally, haven't had a bad meal yet no complaints. read more

What a hidden gem! The exterior sign says deli, so for the longest time we assumed it was a sandwich spot....WRONG! This is an authentic Italian eatery offering amazing pizzas, sandwiches, entrees like roasted turkey over mashed potatoes and the dessert cabinet - OH MY! All gelato is freshly made just like the canolis and other famous Italian desserts. Order first, get your number tent, grab your drinks and sit down. You won't have to wait too long before your food shows up. When you are done with your meal, head over to the dessert cabinet and select your desserts - warning, you save room! They give you a ticket to take back to cashier so you can pay, then sit and enjoy! There is espresso cafe there too! Oh and they have outdoor seating as well. We will be back! read more

Let me start by saying the desert items are good, especially the carrot cake. Also, the employees are incredibly helpful and personable. However, the food is just not great. Really bland and flavorless. I got the gnocchi and it was really mealy and tasteless. Also, the chicken on top tasted like it was frozen and had some kind of char flavoring added to it to simulate grilling. Also, the bread for the subs was pretty flavorless, almost stale tasting. Was hesitant to come here saying it was a "New York deli" but we pulled up and the sign was half falling off(we liked this cuz that is so New York to be like that) we ordered sandwiches to go for our drive back to NYC. We ordered all different choices and over all they were great, the breads were amazing and how bread is suppose to be, crunchy on the outside and then soft on the inside. We pulled up to the pastries and I asked if the sfogliatelle were made today the man behind the counter said yes and I looked at him curiously like they were? Then he explained they make them freeze them and the daily bake them. I said perfect. We also got cannoli. I asked if they were made with ricotta. He now knew I was not fooling around. He explained he was from Palermo and then I settled right down being Sicilian myself. We chatted more with the man behind the pastry counter and he was so friendly and kind. We also got the gelato which was right on. The sfogliatelle was perfect. The cannoli was good as well but something is missing, I can't put my finger on it. But it was good but missing something. Maybe it was the type of ricotta they use. Over all the place had great ambience except the guy behind the counter who kept cutting me off when I was trying to order our sandwiches. This place was awful! Not only did it not look bad, it tasted bad too! I will NEVER come back! My chicken sandwich was ok but the onions were blue! The Mack and cheese was not very good, the cheese looked and tasted like the Kraft mix up cheese! The potato and rosemary pizza was awful too! The potatoes looked like potato chips! Just found a new favorite deli. I opted for the 1/2 combo and picked a Rueben and the tomato orzo bisque. I wanted to save room for dessert as suggested by all the reviews I read. The Rueben and soup was so good I forgot to take a picture. I also liked that the Rueben was toasted just right and didn't scrape the roof of my mouth. Ok so Basilico and Castiglia's downtown run neck and neck for the best pizza in town!! Hands down! Background: Basilico has been producing great pizza since they opened. For a long time a real undiscovered gem. Then when the Fall Hill traffic was rerouted to Cowen - right in front of the store - for 10 months our gem was discovered. From the inside: Dining in is a well lit affair, kid friendly but certainly not "dining" in any sense of the word. You order at the front register (sadly, more on that in a minute), choose a table and a friendly staff member will be along with your meals shortly. Beer and wine are available. From the outside: Definitely head-banging time here... When you walk in it is not unusual to find first-time diners standing at the register, menus in hand having to review the six-page menu, look at the menu board above them, ask 10 questions and poll up to 4 kids for their selections - all this while a hopeless line builds behind them. The most agonizing thing in the world is dutifully calling in your pizza order, arriving in perfect timing and having to cool your heels behind two such families.... It is not unusual to stand there, money in hand for 10 or more minutes while MY family is sitting at home getting hungrier, staring at your boxed-up pizza getting colder by the minute while the aforementioned scenario plays out one or more times right in front of you. It is just plain painful.... Having said all that - I keep going back because the pizza IS THAT good! But hopefully they can get this organized a little bit better sometime soon. read more

This simple diner has excellent chicken piccata! It came in a bowl (not what I expected), but was extremely flavorful! My daughter had the four cheese macaroni and cheese, and she thought it was excellent and very cheesy. Simple in terms of service and decor, very much a diner feel.
