Every time I eat a pie this place is my benchmark for the best pies ever! The  menu at Battersea Pie Station includes classics like steak and stout, minced beef and onion and chicken and mushroom, plus more creative, veggie options including butternut squash and goat's cheese. The steak and stout is my ultimate favorite! This place is my go to pie place every time I'm in London. I always try to stay in Covent Garden just so I can come here. This is my basis of the perfect meat pie with the pleasingly firm crusts and sides of mash and roasted potatoes are so delicious. The rich red-wine gravy comes separately in a small jug. I smother the pie with the gravy. Ingredient quality was excellent. They have mini pies and the regular sized pies. Mrs. Lovett has nothing on this place! Perfect for a quick humble meat pie dinner before a fancy pants opera. Every dish I tried was a hit. Minced Beef & Onion: The most popular, apparently. Smooth and moist inside with a buttery flaky outside. Steak & Stout: Same great crust, but with a very distinctive inside, chunks of firm roast and thick gravy where you could actually taste the stout. Probably my favorite pie here. Chicken & Mushroom: A nice variation from beef, but by no means lesser. With it's large chunks and umami gravy, this was like a quick hit fix for when craving a proper chicken pot pie. Mash & Gravy: The mash was smooth and buttery. The gravy was more than plentiful. Kinda lives under the shadow of the delicious pies though. Sticky Toffee Pudding: Good, but not great. The toffee sauce felt a bit too thick and wasn't as warmed as I like it. The sponge cake was alright, but kinda dry, like they just plopped into the toffee sauce puddle. But it did do a good job of soaking up the sauce with a little spoon dexterity. read more

Oh. My. Goodness. I have to admit that I really visited here because I wanted the Sticky Toffee Pudding, but the sea of pies with perfect crusts had my will shattering ;) I went for the chicken and mushroom pie. The flakiness of the crust, the crispyness of the outside of the pie was perfect. Given my love for flavoring, I had to ding one star because I felt the filling wasn't salted well enough, nor did it carry much flavor (for me). The gravy helped, but the pastry really took it home. As for the dessert, if I could give this place 100 stars, I would. The sticky toffee pudding was out of this world. I ate the whole thing in about .02 seconds flat. There is no doubt that I will be back, for this dessert if nothing else. The place was perfectly clean, the service was absolutely wonderful. All of the servers were kind and friendly and helpful. Really good meat pies here. The aroma hooked me, but as I feasted my eyes on the plates of the dishes of other diners, I was reeling right on in to this adorable pie shop. There were about a dozen different pies to choose from and everything smelled so good that it was almost impossible to choosr. After careful deliberation, I decided upon the Steal and Stout pie. It came it a portion of piquant gravy to pour atop the pie, and it was fantastic. Thick chunks of tender beef housed with this thick delicious crust. Unbelievably good! The rocket (arugula) salad with tomatoes and diced red onion was so fresh and delicious. Arugula is my favorite leafy green, so I'm thrilled that it it so prevalent here. Great pie and pasty shop located on the lower level of Covent Market. Grabbed a quick and delicious lunch since we had got out of the British Museum and were close. Seat yourself set up where you order at the counter and your purchase is brought over to you. I went with the steak and ale pie while the wife went with the chicken and mushroom. The pastry on both was delicate and flaky while there was plenty of tasty filling inside. We washed this down with a pale ale for myself and a tart cider for the wife. Definitely worth visiting if you're at the market as the food is quite good. read more

I was excited to finally try Battersea Pie but I was met with disappointment. Hours posted that they open at 11am. We arrived at noon and the shop was closed. We were told they would open in 10 minuets so we waited. About 12:18 they finally opened without apology. The beef and stout pie had a cardboard rigid crust. The filling to their credit was large pieces of beef but only filling about a third of the pie. The filling has no seasoning. It took salt, pepper and gravy to make it enjoyable. The minty peas were hard and nearly warm without any minty flavor or scent. All in all, far from bad but very short of good or worth a return visit. read more

I am unequivocally head-over-heels in love with Battersea Pie. Yes, it's in a prime tourist area (Covent Garden) and yes, that means the prices are slightly inflated in an already pocketbook-busting, expensive city; but the pies and pastys here are DELICIOUS! This is my go-to pie shop whenever I am in London. I love it. I dream about it. I get excited the second I step off the plane in the U.K. I love everything about this cute little pie shop -- the friendly employees, the adorable decor, and most of all the tasty, tasty pies. I've sampled almost every item on the entire menu and I've not had a dud yet. Everything has been delicious: hot with a flaky crust and freshly prepared. My favorite menu item is the (surprise!) vegetarian cheese, spinach and onion pasty. I also adore the baby fish pie. My husband gets the steak and stout pie with an extra side of gravy (which comes in an adorable baby gravy boat). Note that the dining room area is super tiny and is woefully inadequate for the restaurant. Consider yourself lucky if you are able to dine in and don't have to takeaway. If I had to create a can't-miss foodie tour of London, Battersea Pie would top my list. read more

So good, so delicious, so worth it. We were hungry and tired and discovered this little corner restaurant after hours of shopping and it didn't disappoint. It is clean and very nice looking inside and out. At the counter we ordered a Mushroom Chicken pie and Butternut Squash with Goat cheese pie along with a small glass of their sangria. Each pie came with a little self pour of gravy. The pies were steaming hot and fresh and very tasty. The gravy complemented each very well. I could have had a second they were so delicious but the portions were perfect. The sangria was fantastic and complete with a bit of carbonation and fruit bits for fun. For those that know me well, you understand my love of pie. You will be able to imagine my excitement at unearthing a new specialist pie store. Battersea Pie looks very pretty tucked away in the depth of Covent Garden Market. You can eat in at the cute little tables but I wanted mine to go. There are seven types of pie on offer, but I'd already decided the fate of The Winstone (Steak & Kidney). I'll admit I initially baulked at the excessive £4.50 price tag, £5 if you eat in. You can get sides of mash, beans, peas etc... for between £2.75 to £1. You can ask for herb & red wine gravy for free. So... to the pie. Just me, the pastry and the meaty goodness. For £4.50 would my expectations be met. No. In fact I was gutted. This was a soft pastry pie. Where was my slight crunch as I bit through the pastry? There was none. Where were my chunks of steak & kidney? They were hard to find. I cannot tell you how bitterly disappointed I was. I have recently come across some sensational pie shops, and was eager to add Battersea Pie to this honoured list. They are by no means bad, but they fall well short of what I'd expect for a £4.50 pie. read more

Comforting & savory! The Covent Garden can be madness and after trying to get a seat at a few other restaurants, my husband & I found this small place tucked under the stairs. They had an assortment of pies & I got the Butternut Squash & Goat Cheese Pie with a side of Baked Beans. Savory goodness! The buttery, flaky crust with the squash & goat cheese was an unexpected, amazing match. The Baked Beans were a great complement adding a little sweetness to my meal. The pies are only around £4.50 to £6 & the sides were £1.50 to £4. Quick & comforting meal that left my tummy full & happy. Our wallet was also full & happy. :P Heads up! Absolutely loved this place. My boyfriend came here 2 years ago so when we passed through Covent Garden last week he said we HAD to stop because they were the best meat pies he'd ever had. Well... we ended up going twice! I was also in London a few years ago and learned the hard way that my mushroom allergy & meat pies don't mix (my face looked like a fireball). Alas, when I walked in to Battersea Pie & asked if they were all made with mushrooms, only the specified Chicken & Mushroom was and they assured me I was safe to eat anything else. I had the Steak & Stout pie, while Michael had the Minced Beef & Onion. They were so incredibly delicious. The crust is so perfect and the flavors just unfold into your mouth. I loved it. The second visit we had on this trip was on our last day. We had a late afternoon flight and came here for a quick bite before the airport. When we came in a few days earlier I noticed a Butternut Squash & Goat Cheese pie that I was going to order to avoid mushrooms. It had been on my mind so I ordered that and Michael got the special "Ginger Pig" Bangers & Mash. Obviously much different orders and we did both wish we had reordered the same from the other day, but the food was still delicious. My pie tasted like Thanksgiving. It was a little different than I expected. It had chunked squash & onions but was very good. The only exception to this rule is Shepard's Pie. The Colman's mustard paired extremely well with the steak and kidney, offsetting the heavy game-y flavor of the kidney. This a a small space with limited seating. I would say two people with shopping bags max. Truly. There was a table that seated four but it was a squeeze. With that being said the pies are worth it. I had the meat with stout pie and chicken mushroom pie. The chicken and mushroom pie was traditional so if you're not sure what to get or want to play it safe, I'd say get this. Really creamy and delicious. My husband got the Steak and Meantime Stout Pie. Lovely! The Meantime gives it a slightly smokey or oaky taste. Highly recommend this! What: The best cheap meal on the Plaza. How much: Pies are around £5 (prices vary according to what you get, and also if you eat in or take it away). £10 should be more than enough for a very filling, satisfying lunch of pie, mash, gravy etc... Covent garden has been near the top of my absolute favourite places in London since the first time I went there back in 2011. I tend to hate touristy places, especially when they're really crowded, but there's something about Covent Garden I simply can't resist. As for most heavily touristy places, food is still a bit meh around there though. And/Or rather expensive. But, as for any general rules, there are always exception and I think I've found Covent Garden's! Battersea Pie's shop is a tiny unassuming shop located on the lower level of Covent Garden's Plaza. And it's most definitely the best value-for-money meal around! The whole place is pretty simple. It's all white tiles, marble-like tables and wooden stools. Plus all the necessary condiments. Which is perfectly fine by me (for some reason, I rather like this no-fuss look). But what I like even more are the pies, that are really quickly brought to your table by one of the lovely, always smilling members of staff. From then on, it becomes really difficult to resist the urge to dive in. Don't even try, just gave in to buttery, flaky pastry encasing the most moreish mince beef and onion filling. Honestly I was a bit disappointed. The pies were solid- we had the Chicken and Mushroom and Steak and Stout. The setting is disappointing. We had wanted to sit outside in the terrace, but the server said we could only sit at one of two tables as the rest didn't belong to them. So we sat inside, and ate a pie that was good...that's it. Also the Sprite/7up my son order tasted odd and gave him stomach issues afterwards...his stomach in normally cast iron lol. Plus the server was not really friendly or helpful. Loved this little place under Covent Garden market. The idea of a place devoted to pies as the focus of the meal sounds a great idea for those of us raised with British cuisine. After all, anything under pastry is a great idea, right? We stopped in for lunch (actually that's a fib, we hunted this place out midway through our day of London sightseeing) to try out the pie and mash combos on offer. Himself went with a meat pie, I selected a veggie version, and each comes with an appropriate gravy. The mash was creamy and delicious and the whole meal received a big thumbs up from us. We paired our lunch with some "adult beverages" - two different beers, both local. If you have a sweet tooth, there are dessert options, but we didn't try those out. We tried the steak and stout pie with mash. Filling was very flavorful, with large chunks of tender steak in a stout gravy studded with sweet onion. The puff pastry was done perfectly -- not heavy at all. Mashed potatoes were buttery, smooth, and moist. The mini butternut squash and goat cheese pie surprised us with how well-balanced it was. We had expected the goat cheese to overpower the delicate squash, but the squash held its own and lent a delicious earthy sweetness to the savoury filling. I met a friend here for lunch before heading over to the Strand for some musical action. It's a very small shop with some indoor and outdoor seating as well as take-out options. I ordered the butternut squash and goat cheese pie with a side of green beans and it was delicious! The pie had a thick crust and a delicately flavoured filling while the beans were still a bit crunchy and just lightly buttered, everything taste fantastic! We were also given a vegetarian gravy, which was also quite tasty. The staff were very nice and service was quick. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because there really isn't enough seating and the stools we sat on were quite wobbly and uncomfortable. Battersea Pie is more on the side of fast-food pie than gourmet pie despite a very pretty interior. I had the Winstone pie which is the ever popular steak and kidney pie. I really liked the crust as it was flakey and fluffy so in my opinion, the pastry was very well done. However, the filling was lacking. Couldn't find much kidney or steak and when I did, I thought it tasted like slightly overdone meat. I also had the cole slaw though and it was really good. It isn't a light cole slaw as it was a bit heavy with mayo but sometimes that's exactly the type of cole slaw to hit the spot! As I said, ambience was very nice. Dim lighting with both large tables and stools for one-person diners aligning the wall. Overall good place to go for a cheap lunch and hearty meal, just don't expect gourmet pies :) read more

After seeing this place in Covent Garden on previous trips to London we finally caved and tried it a few weeks ago...and we loved it so much that we decided to go back again before we left. The pies are really good, especially the steak and stout, and prices are so reasonable for being in such a touristy area. Service is quick, although the atmosphere isn't great if you can't grab one of the few tables out in the piazza. The inside is very very small and it tends to get quite crowded, so you may have to squish into the counter table on the side which isn't the most pleasant. This doesn't change my opinion at all though, and I'll definitely come back on my next trip to the area. read more

One of the pride and joys of a sad nation; the very humble pie. The one burden with the responsibility to warm up the tummies of a nation with cold tummies. To provide comfort for the many who have to endure the endless onslaught of dark(sunless) skies and even darker clouds. Everyday seems like a great day for pie here in this frigid 10 Celsius weather in days of early June; "summer is here at last!!" or so that's how they've labelled it. This pie is warm but no quite warm enough. The crust is flaky but only to be upset by the chewy under-cooked inner half of the crust. That filling is mundane and unimaginative at best. Chicken is stringy if not rather tasteless at the same time. But that gravy in the filling is almost gold; salty and sweet with the perfect slightly gelatinous consistency. Far from the best pie I have had in my time but I would say it's one up your local supermarket pie. read more
