The Baptistery of San Giovanni was founded on 1152, and was used to administer the Sacrament of Baptism. It was meant to be mirror the majesty of the adjacent Cathedral and is indeed the largest one in Italy (couldn't find any mention what is the biggest in the world). A ticket is required to enter. (7€ individually, or 10€ if part of a pack to see the other 4 museums on the campus) It is one giant dome, with a visitor accessible second level overlooking the first floor. The giant baptismal fountain isn't really admirable from ground level, but from the upper level, it is something. It is 69 steps going down (forgot to count going up...probably similar)..no elevator. This is the one building where you can pay extra (2€) to listen to an audio guide. While we were up there, a guide began to sing a chant to publicize and demonstrate the amazing acoustics of the dome. I've read that the building can be considered one giant musical instrument. read more

Pisa's Baptistery looked similar to the one we visited in Florence, what was interesting was they closed the doors, made vocalizations that echoed throughout the building. read more

Battistero di San Giovanni is located next to the leaning Tower of pizza we went inside us part of a ticket package we bought online which is great because it allows you to go into every building including the tower. The architecture on the outside of the building is amazing as you go in that is seemingly not much to the building just a empty hall that is used to baptize As far as baptistries go, this one is pretty plain inside, there are a couple of statues here and there, but it's an empty building for the most part, can be done is a few minutes.. There is an upped level, but I am not sure if people is allowed to go up. We didn't. The architecture on the outside of the building is amazing, though. Worthy of stopping by. read more

This is one of the buildings I wish I had gone into when I went on my tour to Pisa. Just looking from the outside though, you can tell that it is gorgeous and is worth stopping into see. If you get to climb the leaning tower, you'll get to see a great view of it from the top. The stone work is mesmerizing and I found myself just staring at it at times. read more

This building stand right beside the Church and it also compliment's the other 2 building ( the church and the Tower). It gives you the taste of Romanesque and Gothic style and is the biggest baptistery one of its kind in Italy. For my science lover friends....Galileo was baptised here! and ticket to tower of Pisa does not cover the entrance to Baptistery. You will have to purchase a separate ticket for it. read more

Personally, I really loved Piazza del Duomo, with its beautiful baptistery, cathedral and its infamous tower. The baptistery is a beautiful, circular building that, like most Italian architecture, is extremely ornate. I keep using that word to describe architecture and art in Italy - but it's true! The baptistery is also remarkably well-preserved. The exterior reminds me a little bit of the Duomo in Milan. The interior is nice but there isn't very much to look at. You can climb up to a second level and get an overall view of the interior of the baptistery which is cool. Now, once you get up there - DO make sure to look out the windows. You'll find the perfect place to snap a picture of the cathedral! My suggestion would be to visit around 4-5pm as there seem to be a lot less people wandering about and you can get the obligatory tourist shot of yourself holding up the tower, without a bunch of strangers in your pics! read more

This is the largest baptistry in Italy and is a beautiful, circular, structure. The interior is gigantic, but rather plain in style. The font is well worth seeing for its gorgeous and highly detailed reliefs and the bronze sculpture of St. John the Baptist in the middle. This building leans very slightly towards the Duomo, but not as noticeably as the leaning tower. read more

The Leaning Tower isn't all there is to see in the area. Definitely check out the Battistero as well - it's beautifully impressive and the architecture and attention to detail is phenomenal. read more
