MECCA. I've wanted to come here for 40 years, and I finally did. The Bauhaus has been one of my main influences in my long design career. Sad that the iconic Bauhaus sign on the side of the building was under construction, but I'll just have to visit again. The Bauhaus is a MUST for anyone who is a fan of architecture and design. I planned my trip to Germany mostly around art and the Bauhaus was on my list as a place to visit. I have been a fan of the Bauhaus ever since I was young. It was so surreal to walk the grounds and sleep in the Studio Building which is the former dormitory's of the students of the Bauhaus. I am a fan of Marianne Brandt as well as Gropius, Meyer, Moholy, Schlemmer, Breur the list goes on. It was an experience that I will never forget. I strongly suggest booking your reservations for the recycled hotel (boutique hotel) which is the Studio Building way in advance. There are only 20 rooms that can be rented. I would request one with the balcony. It took them some time to return my email regarding lodging. I actually had to phone them about it as well. They do not have a booking option on the website nor for the guided tours as well. You need to book your tour in English way in advance. It is 75 EURO which to me was well worth it. There is no wi-fi in the rooms. Just a simple room somewhat to that of how the students lived though I read a little different about the furniture in the students room and seen different pics as well. To stand on the balcony was amazing. My tour guide's name was Vincent. A lovely guy who is used to the run of the mill tourist who come to the Bauhaus because it is a landmark and part of the tour group they are in. So, for Vincent and I we had a great time. I knew a lot of the history so he shared more things with me. Like the famous stairs that were in Schlemmer's painting and the stage in which Schlemmer's plays were preformed on. Most famous one "triadic ballet". The mezzanine (canteen) is also part of the stage where the performances where held. There is just so much history here I would end up writing all day/night. The Bauhaus Cafe is great. I dined here twice. Then once at the Kornhaus restaurant another landmark of the Bauhaus. Be sure to visit the MEISTERHAUS DESSAU which is around the bend from the Bauhaus. This is where the Bauhaus Masters lived unfortunately the tours here are only in German. Buy your tickets to enter the haus's. Also just about a 15-20 min tram ride away is more architecture in Dessau that Gropius, Meyer and many others of the Bauhaus have built. That tour is in German only but I did it on my own. Took a lot of walking but whatever. I hired a cab to take me around. I strongly suggest dinning at the Kornhaus which sits on the Elbe River and has a great menu and outdoor patio with amazing service. Not only for those interested in art, design and architecture, the famous Bauhaus is well worth a visit. This School Of Design revolutionised creative thinking and moved design as well as architecture into a new, more practical direction. The main building itself is interesting and is the home of a permanent and also changing temporary exhibitions. I visited in early March to see the 'BAUHAUS. THE ART OF THE STUDENTS': art and design works of former students of the Bauhaus masters. It has a well-stocked café onsite and gift shop where you could purchase the famous ALBERS stacked tables or the WAGENFELD bedside light. They host events as well as guided tours and the entrance fee is very reasonable. If you find yourself in the area, go and get inspired by colours and graphical lines. You won't regret it! read more

Now we got a place way past its prime. We see the cracks and crumbles. Yes, I am a Bauhaus fan. I mean the style. My home is a bauhausy (minimalist) loft. Besides history, there isn't much left in Dessau, I guess. It seems that the bad of Bauhaus survived in Dessau. The innovativeness and creative spirit, serving economic purposes - I see nothing of it at Bauhaus anymore. It is just a museum to bygone times. I live close to Harvard and find much more inspiring relicts of Walter Gropius here. He didn't stop after leaving Dessau, but Dessau seemed to have been frozen in a pre-Third-Reich status. Dessau hasn't reinvented itself yet, but there is potential. It needs to stop merely being a museum. It needs individuals to inject life ... I see opportunity, but no achievements yet. read more

I took a train to Dessau from Berlin with a group of friends. We spent the whole day looking at Bauhaus exhibits. I was thoroughly impressed. I loved being able to walk around and experience the design live. This review was written in 2009. read more

Dessau is definitely off the beaten path and the main attraction is roughly 15 minutes by foot from the Hauptbahnhof. It's a dreary and sad town but the true heart of the Bauhaus movement. So, if you are a die-hard admirer of the Gropius school of design, it is a must see. All of the buildings (the main structure as well as the faculty housing a few blocks away) are in excellent condition. For a modest fee, you can buy a ticket which gets you access to all of the major Bauhaus locations is town. I would recommend going during an exhibition or event. I visited on a weekday afternoon and it was absolutely desolate. read more

Great place to visit, not only for architecture nerds. We stayed at the Bauhaus' historical dorm overnight, and the experience was fantastic. People are friendly and the building is marvellous, of course. read more

A Unesco World Heritage side. Very interesting for people into architecture and design history. They have a permanent exhibition and also offer guided tours. It has been a few years since my visit and maybe I was too young to appreciate it, but it was not my cup of tea. read more

If you are into modern design, Bauhaus is where is all started. Main building and masters houses have been restored well. Lots of history. Cool little pub in the bottom of the main building. Lots to take it if you are into into this stuff (I am). One note, all the main tours available were in German. We found an English one through the main Dessau tourism office. They may be available through the Bauhaus tourism office too, but they were not as accommodating. They apparently book through the same group though. If you do book, ask for Vincent. He gave tours as part of the Bauhaus group, but gave private English ones as well. A great tour guide. A little pricey, but well worth it. read more
