This has been a family favorite restaurant for many years now. I recommend the bacon bourbon filet.

Terrible service. Atmosphere is dark and dingy. Food is good but expensive and like I said terrible service. This all equals not worth it.

First of all, it was my wife's birthday. So when I made my reservation for us to eat there I told them this and requested a cake to be brought to our table. Upon getting there, got a nice booth for us. Took a while for the wait staff to bring us water and get our drink order. Ordered our food and it came fast and hot. Waiter came by once more to check on us, so far so good. After checking on our food, never came back to us. I had to go to the hostess to ask about our birthday cake. She said she would check and get back it to our table. Needles to say, it never came. Never had our waiter ask for another drink or refill our water. Very nice establishment. I got the vegetarian penne w/o the mushrooms and it was delicious. The waitress was very friendly and picked up conversation with us readily. It's right by the airport so if you're wanting to grab some non-airport food before you leave Bloomington, IL. Hop on over the Baxter's. I'm glad we chose not to go the the Buff Wild Wings next door and ate here instead. The ambience and environment were very classy and sets the mode for a great meal. Nice and quiet and peaceful. It was quite dim/dark in there for the middle of the afternoon, but I think that the dining area gets full facing sunlight around noon so the shades were drawn partially. The service and food quality has really gone downhill. My friend and I ordered steaks and they were tough and not seasoned. The food was awful. We could have spent half the money and gone to Texas Road House. Our waitress treated us like we were an inconvenience. We were waiting on dessert and she dropped off the check but we still needed service. Drinks were low, our dessert took 30 minutes after we were done with our meal to receive and they were by no means busy. Really disappointed. I hope they got rid of that waitress. We took my parents to Baxter's for the holiday and they mentioned that they hadn't dined there for awhile. The atmosphere was festive, trees lit with white lights. The bar has a warm feeling to it with the rich-colored wood and huge windows. The dining room is split between booths and tables, the booths looked cozy but our party of 6 needed a table. We all enjoyed our meals, the fellas in our group all ordered steaks and there were no complaints. My stepmom had a pasta dish and said her meal was good. I ordered Brazil kabobs and I only wished there was more rice or saffron rice served. We had apps in the bar prior to our meal, calamari was great, chickenwings were okay. There was a nice selection for the half-price app night. Service was awesome, Mike and Muriel took good care of us, very attentive. I have had several meals at Baxters both lunch and dinner along with a Mother's day buffet.To date every meal has been exceptional and service was great. This is one of my favorite go to places in Bloomington Normal where high quality food and drinks are part of the everyday lineup. I usually go with the chef's catch of the day as it never disappoints be it fish, scallops, or shrimp. Great appetizers like pork belly bites, thai shrimp, or drunken mushrooms. I am reviewing my review based on my recent experience of dining at Baxter's during my last stay at the Holiday Inn last week. I checked in to the hotel on Sunday afternoon and went to Baxter's bar for a late lunch and a beer. Met Conner who was at the bar and struck a conversation with him and I am glad I did. He is a very pleasant, friendly and knowledgeable. His recommendations were 100% hit. He introduced me to some good local beer and Rye. He even made it a point to come over and say "Hi" even when he was busy managing the restaurant. Over the week, I had the Prime Rib Sliders and Smothered Grilled Chicken and they were well cooked and flavorful. Food was good and the service was great! read more

Went here for lunch with a client. 5 of us. The place is pretty large. Wine racks everywhere. Menu is diverse. Enough good choices that a few of us couldn't decide what to get. I had the bbq chicken salad. Good portions. Very tasty. They flash fry (or crispy on outside only) the avocado which was a nice touch. Prices seemed very reasonable for a work lunch. The interior and exterior of this restaurant was very decorative and had a classy feel and look to it, as I walked in - the first thing that caught my eye was wine bottles (Cakebread, Silver Oaks, Mondavi Opus One, Rodney Strong) ....most of them I drank and some I didn't. From that sign, I knew that this was my kind of place to wine and dine. The waitress handed me a wine list and to my surprise I did not see any of the bottles that I saw when I first walked in. I asked her and she she told me that she will bring the "special' wine list. I've been to many places in Bloomington and so far no one serves aged prime rib, so when I saw it on the menu - I had to order it. They offer two sizes, 12 oz and 16oz. - of course I had to go with the super-size 16oz. The waitress was very attentive and friendly, she made sure that our glass of wine never was empty, she kept pouring and opening another bottle of wine while we ate. The prime rib was not too lean but on the way too fat side. It was very flavorful and not exactly the perfect, melt in your mouth prime rib that I was expecting. Overall, I did enjoy my dinner experiences here and would definitely come back for another slice of prime rib. Four stars for the wine selection and the service. Three stars for the food. read more

A little fatty, but still great flavor. 5. The BBQ Sauce on their sticky ribs -- best I've EVER had. I would have licked that plate clean, had I been home with it. The "Not so Good" 1. This place was packed and I'm not sure that the kitchen knows how to keep up with it. 2. The mashed potatoes...I am pretty sure those weren't real potatoes. 3. The food presentation on the plate is awful. On one end I had the Prime Rib, on the other -- this little dollop of the "potatoes". Bread service was nothing special and consisted only of one type - Sister Schubert's rolls that come frozen at Sam's club. They are REALLY delish though despite my description. I know this because my family begs for them all the time since I bought them once. We both had the 5 onion soup - too much tarragon or something in it for my taste. I had seared ahi tuna with sticky rice and cucumber salad. The dipping sauce was sweet. Bf had mahi mahi with a shrimp sauce and asparagus. Nice presentation. Nice beer selection. Service was good. Ribs fall off the bone every single time. As an undergrad, I went there once/twice a week and had almost everything on the menu. Ribs and steaks are cooked to perfection. Tip- ask for the fries to be cooked "extra crispy/double fry them" ... For the love of God, it's insanely good!! Chocolate cake for dessert is a must as well. I've been a fairly regular customer of Baxter's for approximately 2 years. And in the past 3 months, I've eaten there about twice a month on average. Last night was the very last time I will ever eat at Baxter's again. Either due to incompetence or just plain indifference...the waitstaff fucks up my order on a consistent basis. Oh, they *say* they take food allergies "seriously"...but in reality they couldn't care less. How do I know this? Well! As a former waitress, I'm well aware that food allergy orders require hawk-like attention to detail. Not just writing a few things down and then letting some random food runner take your food out to the table without you personally checking it first. But that's exactly what happens EVERY time....the servers don't give a shit. And the back of the house fucks it up every time. Now...perhaps it's not the servers' fault. At this point, does it matter? Nah. The whole chain of command is sloppy; really, it's a combination of many people fucking up consistently. Which is even worse. So last night, after giving Baxter's waaaaaayyyyyy too many chances already to redeem themselves, I gave them one last chance to get my order right. Without, well...."poisoning" me again. And just as they have done several times before, they did it again. Once again proving they give great lip service to those of us with food allergies, but honestly don't give a fuck. I'll use the time before last and this last time I was there as examples in this review. Both experienced within the past 30 days. Things they've done wrong, making me very very sick: - lied (or never asked the chef when I asked what's in it) to me about the seasoning in their "steak butter" they bring to the table with the bread...said it had nothing in there when it did - gave me seasoning EVERY TIME on my food when I told them not to give me any - gave me sauces on my food EVERY TIME when I told them not to give me any - gave me sour cream on my baked potato when I told them not to give me any - gave me butter on my baked potato when I said to put it on the side of it Here's the thing: when you have food allergies, there's a social embarrassment factor involved. I have been on first dates here...and I tried to be as polite as possible in front of these "new guys" without being vague to my servers. It's a balance. You don't want to come across as rude or psycho about this sort of thing....but you don't want to get sick, either. So trust me when I say that I was very nice when speaking about my food allergy needs. And yes -- clear, too. "No seasoning, no sauces please." Also specified which things I'm allergic to....and said, "just make it plain, please." Simple. One would assume saving them taking extra steps to prepare food actually winds up saving them valuable time and effort in the back of the house, but apparently they love putting extra shit on food that they never have to. Shit that I specifically told them *NOT TO.* And here it is, the very next morning, and I am up (again)...vomiting and in severe pain. I will look as though someone inflated me like a balloon for the next 4 or 5 days too, and feel as though I have the flu. Is this "life-threatening"...? No. Could it one day suddenly become life-threatening...? Yes. That's what food allergies do, over time -- the more you are exposed to an allergen. So essentially I am always one step away from anaphylaxis, shock, and death. At this point, I never say, "life-threatening"...but perhaps I should. Maybe I have to start becoming more aggressive with servers now, because of these repeatedly indifferent asshats who honestly could not give a fuck about my health. And as far as the waitstaff and back of house staff goes at Baxter's, it's apparent: they're incompetent, sloppy, uncaring assholes. The management isn't much better; I've spoken with them numerous times and the end result is the same. Lots of "gosh, I'm sorry" but staff never seems to get the memo. All talk, no action. Staff always fucks it up the very next time I'm there. Again: I only ask to get my food cooked without added spices, dairy products, and sauces. I usually get the salmon. It's never marinaded; they grill it and it's done. At the end, they can put a sauce on it and sprinkle seasoning on it -- I merely ask that *they not do that.* THIS IS NOT AN ADDED step. In fact, it SAVES them a very valuable minute of time at the end. But, what do they do...? They put that shit on there anyway. When I specifically asked them not to. Same thing happens when I order steak: they do not have to put steak seasoning on the steak at the end -- that's last. But they do. Same thing for a baked potato. They do not have to put butter or sour cream on it at the end; I tell them not to. Another valuable minute or so of time they are wasting, needlessly...by adding shit to the order that I told them not to add. Yet, they do it...EVERY time. So that's it for me. Fuck Baxter's. Exceptional fine dining experience in BN! It's nice to be treated so respectfully and have waiters be so attentive. Our server, I believe his name was Brian, accommodated our specific needs and even offered to have the chef prepare something that wasn't on the current menu but my friend had enjoyed a previous experience. Their menu changes seasonally which is nice. Out table of four split the mushroom appetizer. It was good, but only had 5 small mushrooms, which is probably good for a personal appetizer but not good to split. I had the small plate of tuna, which was good, but lots of unique spicy flavors, maybe too many going on, but a fun dish. The blue cheese wedge salad was very flavorful and had lots of dressing and cheese. We all got the butter cake, which is a must! I can always count on Baxters for a nice relaxing evening. read more

First they "lost" our order, After soup/salads were finished, I had to check w our server, learned that the kitchen had lost our entry order... then it took forever to arrive. After being greeted by the very accommodating hostess, I decided to sit at the bar where Vanessa immediately engaged me with a smile and glass of water. After asking what I would like, I mentioned wine and she helped navigate me to a unique Paso Robles, only after offering several tastes. She gave me time to order but not too much time where I felt neglected. I started with the Baxter salad which was very refreshing before my perfectly cooked prime rib and creamy mashed potatoes. Love Baxters. Everything is delicious and there are several specialty menus to choose from. Regular, Paleo, Gluten Free, the options are endless. The tuna and steak tartare are delicious. The Brazilian kabobs are incredible. The salmon is amazing. Portion sizes are smaller than average because they are what they should be. Plan to get an appetizer because you won't regret it. Or a dessert. The bread pudding is a chef friend of mine's recipe. Try it. Deliciousness. They have deals on Wednesday nights, so if you were hesitant on the prices, come in on a Wednesday. The service staff are friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and give good suggestions about meals and spirits. I enjoy a Bellini martini and beet salad to start. My coworkers and I spent a few hours at Baxter's for a work event/happy hour. Appetizers were set up buffet style and all of them were delicious! My top favorites were the bacon wrapped dates, butter cake, and crab cakes. All of the appetizers were consistently refilled so there was enough for everyone. My experience at the bar was also great. When first arriving I ordered a Moscato. Throughout the night the bar tender remembered my drink and would often stop by the table to see if I needed a refill. Top notch service for sure. Yet another stellar dining experience...from the warm greeting by the hostess and waiter to the SUBLIME Baxter's salad ( the dressing and extra veggies) Tomato Basil soup(wow) and very interesting slightly sweet square rolls, w/garlicky butter. I cant stop eating the Lamb Lollys -- done to perfection every time and accompanied by grilled asparagus and garlicky mashed potatoes.
