Bay Area K9 has been a lovely experience with me and my dog Cane for the past few months, from the training and using the Sniffspot as well. This review is long overdue for sure! Training aspect: Steve, has helped my men reactive and dog reactive 2yo German shepherd adjust to our home and make our bond SO strong. I myself, have learned so much from him and have finally been able to teach my dog phenomenal manners and after a few sessions, his behavior at home is so much better now. We have more to learn, but Steve has taught us everything and been patient and kind, and it works out so well for our learning style. His photography is also phenomenal and has taken amazing progress photos of Cane, and I can guarantee I'm probably going to get one framed in the future. 10/10 trainer, couldn't recommend him enough. Sniffspot: This area behind the facility is SO nice if you don't have a backyard, which is very common in the Bay Area. Having a high energy dog, exercise is so important to keep him in shape, and keep him happy. The turf is always nice and clean, and the area is always quiet and we are never disturbed. When I first started training with Steve I was crying on a regular basis because I thought my Belgian Malinois rescue hated me. He had severe resource guarding issues and severe leash reactivity so bad that I refused to walk him but I had to because I couldn't trust anyone else handling him. We recused a 1 yo 1/2 Doberman and Hound dog, Brooklyn from up north and she's never been experience the world as we know it. Never seen a car, other animals, noises, sounds and even a language. We needed help! I researched a lot of dog training and was referred to Steve by a lady at a park playing fetch with her Doberman. Her dog was amazing, excellent recall, commands, and tricks. She told me how Steve helped her train her and her dog because it's about the relationship between the owner and the dog. There was an amazing transformation after a couple lessons. As the dog owner, you have to continue the trading at home and be consistent. My goal was to be able to walk with her off leash and I can do that now, after a couple months, thanks to Steve. Steve is incredibly nice and has two incredibly well trained dogs. Unfortunately, after two short sessions I requested a refund because there was no structure as to how he was going to help address my particular circumstances. I was kind enough to pay in cash transfer of $699 so that he would not have the credit card fee. Because he doesn't offer refunds, he asked me to give him another chance - he did extend the 30 mini sessions to hour long sessions. However, these were really ineffective training sessions. I specifically requested information on "the what and how" of addressing my dogs new behaviors (that likely developed during -COVID) such as well as what I needed to practice with my dog, but to no avail. My dog already knows commands; and, he was not able to inform or assist me in addressing my dog's separation anxiety and protectiveness. He basically advised me to buy a Sprenger prong collar, which is high quality, does work, and does not harm him. However, it's not appropriate for all scenarios and is not a fix. read more

This review is long overdue! Let me start off by saying that I'm so thankful to Steve for helping me understand my dog and her behavior. With that being said, Loba (our German Shepherd) has become my best friend. Before going to Steve, having her as a puppy was extremely stressful. It's been almost 2 years (our fault for not being consistent) that we have been getting her trained by Steve, and now she's a completely different dog. One of the most stressful things with her WAS her anxiety on car rides, but now I can't go anywhere without her! Steve is not hands which is what I like the best of his way of training. Instead, he guides me and helps me understand what I'm doing and why I'm doing it a certain way. Now when I train with Loba, I understand how I need to control the environment to have her focus on only me and that makes taking her out less stressful. I'm able to have her off leash when needed without worrying that she will take off. I can go on and on about how much we have learned from Steve, but the main point of my review is that it takes time and hard work to train your pet. I've been to several training sessions now with Steve now and he has been absolutely great. My staffy loves him and he is very patient. Both hands on and hands off. I checked reviews here prior to joining looking at the good and the bad. The take away of this, is that you have to be willing to put in the work yourself as well to see best improvements. If you're a lazy owner looking to just have a trainer do it all for you then you don't understand the objective of training. Bay Area K9 Association came recommended by someone I know and with the great reviews on Yelp, I decided to sign up my dog. I was disappointed with the training approach and results. Steve is very friendly but never developed a relationship with my dog, as his approach is very hands off. I felt that our training meetings were "Check-ins" to see how we trained our dog in between the sessions and to assign more homework. There was zero training or guidance - we were just given a specific task (ex: learn how to heel) to work on ourselves. Every session Steve brought out his very well trained dogs (and that's one of the reasons we signed up too), but that was a time killer for our session, as we weren't there for that. Cashmere is a mini aussiedoodle I got during quarantine and I really didn't know what I was getting myself into. We've been training with Steve and his team for about 6 months now and highly recommend his program! We took our pit-mix puppy (Hawk) to Steve when Hawk was 6 months old. He's a strong dog and I had difficulty controlling him during walks. Steve has helped us along the way from 1. Helping us build a relationship with Hawk 2. Knowing what treats, collars, toys and tools to buy 3. Building confidence in ourselves as trainers and 4. We brought our husky, Roman, to BAK9A when he was just a little pup. He is now 2 years old and gets so many compliments on how well behaved and well trained he is! Steve taught us everything we know!! Steve worked with us on really mastering the fundamentals and eventually we worked our way up to group sessions. We had goals for Roman to be off leash trained (which is no easy task for a husky) and Steve made sure to give us lots and tips and tricks so that we were able to work on his training in the comfort of our own home. The group sessions that they offer were also a great way of getting our pup socialized as well as helping with his ability to focus on commands while other dogs/distractions are around. The agility course he has set up is amazing, and I can see my dog getting more and more confident as he accomplishes different obstacles. My pup has also gotten to do a few group classes with Josh, which are always fun! It's great to fold in a variety of distractions to test my dog's focus and recall. This review is LONG overdue!! Where to begin... Steve has been with us on our journey: going from two crazy puppies to our (now) well-behaved dogs. Let's start from the beginning. We got our two puppies within a few months of each other: a West Highland Terrier and a Belgian Malinois. A very unlikely pair one might say. We knew we wanted to get them trained by a professional as they were both a handful. No offense to the training provided at PetsMart or Petco, but we needed more intensive training. We did our homework and narrowed it down to three training facilities (one being Bay Area K9 Association). 1. We started at a well-known training facility in San Jose, and the owner was cocky, unwelcoming and acted like he was doing us a favor by giving us 5 minutes of his time. The prices at this place were also ridiculous. It seemed like this facility's only goal was $$$. (I won't name names as it's not important, but I'm sure you can figure it out if you've done similar research.) 2. Next, we went to another training facility in San Jose and the owner didn't even show up for the appointment we set to meet him. 3. Lastly, we came to Steve at BAK9 and immediately got good vibes from him and knew he was our guy. At that point, we didn't feel the need to go anywhere else. While we had our work cut out for us, we put our trust in Steve that he could help us! We were right. Training our dogs here was such a wise decision, and the best thing we could have done for them and us! Steve really knows his stuff. He goes deeper than the surface with dogs and can decipher the root cause of certain behaviors, which we never could have figured out on our own. Some of the things our dogs have done has been bewildering to us, but Steve always had the answer. Each of our dogs have had their individual issues, and there were points they weren't getting along with each other as well. We had some frustrating times with them at home, but we remained hopeful and didn't give up on our dogs! It took many, many months of going to class and implementing what Steve taught us, but our dogs have grown and made AMAZING progress! There is no way we could have gotten these results on our own, nor could we have with another training facility, in my opinion. Steve truly does care about our dogs and has always had faith in them. He has a very calm approach with dogs, and all the methods he taught us have proven to be successful when we put them into practice at home. If you have a dog with behavioral issues, or just want your dog to learn basic obedience, this is the place for you! Steve is really experienced with all breeds, but particularly Belgian Malinois, which can be a lot to handle if you've never had one before. (We were first time Mal owners.) When I first brought my boy Caspian, a ~1 year old purebred Doberman, to Steve, I knew he was a smart pup but I hadn't discovered his potential. To say that Cas blew both Steve and I away is an understatement. Since then, he's made incredible strides in his reactivity, bitework training, and impulse control, and our bond has been deepened in a way that's priceless. Steve has given me valuable insight into the way that a dog's mind works and how to set him up for success. I trust the advice he gives and regularly use it as a guideline for my interactions and others' interactions with Caspian. I also appreciate that Steve isn't a trainer that hammers down on pups demanding obedience while intimidating them even though he works with working dogs.
