Update (6 months later): Happily upgrading this to 5 stars! One of the best parts of Yelp is getting to update a review when a business earns it, and Bay Area Orchids absolutely did. The orchid I bought here back in January is still blooming beautifully in July, and it's gorgeous. That alone speaks volumes. These orchids are clearly loved, expertly grown, and exceptionally well cared for. This visit was such a joy. Jesus was welcoming, patient, and happy to answer all of my orchid questions. And then there was Lulu, the adorable Yorkiepoo, who may have been just as responsible for my purchases. Bay Area Orchids has been a family-owned business for more than 25 years, and you can feel that passion throughout the nursery. I walked in planning to buy one orchid and somehow left with three: a gorgeous golden Phalaenopsis with multiple flower spikes, a vibrant magenta beauty, and a petite coral Phalaenopsis that completely stole my heart. My kitchen windowsill has officially become an orchid gallery! If you're heading to Half Moon Bay State Beach, this is an easy stop along the way, and they're open until 6 PM. Whether you're buying your first orchid or adding to a collection, this place is well worth a visit. Fair warning: you'll probably leave with more orchids than you planned. A family operation bringing over 25 years of orchid experience! They have been in operation since 2000. We found ourselves in this row of greenhouses going from one to the other. Hoping to find a souvenir to take home on the eight hour drive. Instead I found myself feeling lighter, happier, blissful even. As soon as I stepped inside and started walking up and down each row of extraordinary orchids. The person attending to the plants was super nice and told us to stay as long as we wanted to. If they had a bench or chair (any place to sit really) it would have been difficult to get me to leave. As sitting inside with the orchids sounded like such a pleasant way to spend the rest of my afternoon. So many varieties and colors to choose from! Healthy, happy plants. You could almost hear them singing if you listen closely. I highly recommend this place for all your orchid needs. read more

I've searched for several years, often online, for light pink Cymbidium orchids. I found a few miniature ones, but never the large ones that I wanted. I made a trip to Half Moon Bay, and I was not disappointed. What looks like a small shop in a row of shops, turns out to be very large and filled with many beautiful species. I bought two cymbidiums and one phalaenopsis. The prices were reasonable. The help there was very courteous. The plants are very healthy. read more

Terrible Experience - Rude, Overpriced and Unprofessional A friend of mine recently had a terrible experience at Bay Area Orchid Nursery in Half Moon Bay, while purchasing an orchid. My friend paid $28 for a single plant - overpriced to begin with - and it wilting and was dropping petals within days. My friend has many years experience owning orchids, which usually last 2 to 3 months, so this was either poor quality or maintenance. My friend spoke with the owner, who agreed for a refund, only if I returned it to Half Moon Bay - a 50 minute drive from San Jose. The owner offered the alternative of meeting at the Farmers Market on Sunday in San Jose, however that wasn't a realistic option for my schedule.  After my friend made the trip, the owner's son Jesus, was very rude, refused to let my friend exchange it for a better orchid, which would be fair for the inconvenience, and even called my friend a liar when they didn't want to give their personal info. My friend did receive a refund however, my friend feels the rudeness and being called a liar was uncalled for. This experience was very unprofessional, overpriced, and disrespectful. My mother was so excited to get an orchid here for the first time and once we walked out the store the wind made the whole branch of flowers snap off. She tried asking if she could replace it because maybe the branch was a little older and they weren't willing to help her at all. read more

I have been coming here for years and after coming here yesterday, I am not sure I will come back again. The young kid working at the register was beyond rude and unhelpful. He treated us like he was mad that we were in the store buying 6 orchids and he just wanted us out of the store. If this was my family business, I would not have him working with customers. There is usually another perosn and he is much nicer. There is always a nice selection of orchids and the price is good but a bad attitude is not cool to customers. read more

Beware - MEALY BUGS! I bought a beautiful phal about a month ago and it had no signs of bugs, fast forward a month later and I have an explosion of mealy bugs on this plant. I am hoping to save it because it's a very beautiful and unique orchid. They have a decent selection but will not be returning. read more

Okay, so it is time to update my review. I went back and bought a second orchid here after carefully examining the plant. No bugs this time. The orchid appears to be in very good health (and still is after gracing my home for about a month) and was very reasonably priced. I will be back again when I need another orchid. read more

Sooo this is probably the oddest review out of the bunch but this isn't a review for the orchilds but rather the kimchi they sell here. We came here thinking we were going to look at some orchilds but being the foodies we were, we were way more interested in the kimchi than the flowers. Lol we got odd looks from the folks actually buying orchilds haha! We got the "gym chi?" it was basically flash fried napa cabbage and then spiced and fermented. It was literally one of the best kimchis I've ever had in my life. We killed the bag within a few days. Can't wait to come back for kimchi, soooo yummy, I'm going to stock up like crazy the next I stop by here!! read more

We picked up an orchid in May. It flowered beautifully but then...root rot! I know it was only 15 bucks or so but it might have been nice to know that it should be re-potted. It was packed in moss which never dries out. I have re-potted into bark but it looks bleak. Only one leaf is green now. read more

We stopped by the Orchid nursery on a whim on our way to Half Moon Bay. It was worth the stop. There were rows and rows of blooming orchids. The place felt like a dream. There were two workers, both very nice. They would let you browse and spend as much time deciding on what you wanted. I found a lovely orchid which my mom would love. It was priced nicely at $18 with tones of healthy beautiful blooms. These would probably sell for $25-30 at the flower market. I wish I bought at least one pot. But I didn't intend to buy any on this trip. But next time I will buy a few as gifts for all the ladies in my life! Myself included. read more

The plants looked super healthy and happy and I picked up two gorgeous plants... Prices were very reasonable, I picked up a large phaleonopsis orchid that had 16 buds on there for 16 dollars and a small phal with 18 buds for $12! read more

I bought a gorgeous miniature cymbidium here two years ago. Unfortunately, it suffered during the drive back to Los Angeles--I took Highway 1, so it was in the car for two days--and lost all its blooms. It just bloomed again after nearly two years of tender loving care--and the wait was well worth it! If I lived nearby, I'd get more--I haven't seen a similar one since. I recommend this business to anyone interested in orchids, though you won't get a lot of customer service. read more

The only staff around was a teenage boy who was mostly on his phone and seemed like he was throwing random prices out depending on the number of flowers on the plant. Just want to shout out the amazing local orchid farm, right off highway 92 in Half Moon Bay. Their orchid selection is very diverse and numerous. Their customer service is outstanding and the value of the entire orchids is even better!! Keep an eye out for the rare the fragrant orchids! I just could not be happier to shop for orchids anywhere else! I definitely will return and highly recommend to my coastal neighbor! My husband and I ordered all of our flowers (read: orchids) for our wedding from E-plant world, AKA Orchidholic. We decided to do our flowers ourselves under the guidance of my husband's uncle, who arranges flowers for weddings in New York. I knew I wanted all orchids for our wedding. After visiting E-plant world's shop in the SF flower mart (also called "Orchidholic") and their greenhouse in Half Moon bay, it was obvious we found the right place. First, E-plant world has a great selection of gorgeous orchids, that are all lovingly grown in their beautiful greenhouse in half moon bay. Second, E-plant world's orchids are very priced very reasonably!! Considering the variety and quality of the orchids, we were thrilled with the relatively low cost of each plant. Third, the owners of E-plant world are so nice and really went above and beyond for us when we ordered our flowers. About a month before the wedding, we went to the greenhouse and had our orchid plants set aside. The owners then "bloomed" the plants so that they all had multiple flowers on each stem when our wedding took place. They also went ahead and arranged all the plants for us in flowerboxes we picked our for the centerpieces, and even cleaned the leaves so they weren't dusty!! When I saw our centerpieces for the first time, I almost cried because they were so beautiful. Thanks in part to E-plant world, our wedding looked lush and extravagant and elegant. Our orchid centerpieces looked expensive, but were actually one of the most modest expenditures we made for our wedding. It's so obvious that the owners of E-plant world love orchids and love what they do. I can't recommend them highly enough. read more

I think my fiance's mom would give this place a strong 4, so I'll give it a 4. My fiance's mom is a big time gardener, so having passed by this area of shops in the past, we had to take her here before she left. Wow, that lady went to TOOOOWNNN. So as others have said, this is like the Costco of orchids. My fiance's mom lives in NY, so she nearly had an orchid-asm when she walked in. She was in heaven as you could imagine. NY orchid prices are very expensive, she said. So coming here and seeing the variety and inexpensive prices was very exciting to her. She must've examined each orchid at least twice, some three times. Very picky. In the end, she bought about $108 in orchids. She got a 10% discount because she's old, Chinese, and a haggler. What Russell Peters says is definitely true and alive in my fiance's mom. On another funny note: for my Korean American brethern of the 1.5 to 1.9 generation. This place will remind you of sitting in a Korean church with your parents. Why? When I walked in, I could hear it: old Korean people's praise music. Piped through the speaker system. It reminded me of all the times my brother and I used to goof off in church, sitting next to my mom and dad (who seemed to be just as bored at times too). It's like that over-the-top praise music where people throw up their hands and feign rapture and shit like that. Aeeeesh, glad those days are over. One other oddity: there's a bell which you must ring and then the store owners come out to help you. Some people were looking at me because I was pacing, looked disinterested, and perhaps they knew Asian people owned this place. I gave them the "Yes I'm Asian, no I don't work here" look. While they have a huge variety of orchids, this small business could learn a lot about customer service. When paying at the register, the gentleman didn't give me change. I also had to ask for a receipt. When I pointed out that he owed me change, he clicked his tongue, let out a sigh, and gave me the INCORRECT amount of change. He walked away before I could point that out. The orchid plants are lovely, but the whole experience left a unpleasant taste. I expect better from a small business on the coast! read more

I saw their booth at last year's SF Flower and Garden show and found their actual nursery/greenhouse by chance on my way to Half Moon Bay. The guy at the nursery that day was the same guy from the show and I mentioned to him that I saw him at the show. He remembered I had a walking cast at the time so that's how I knew he wasn't bs-ing me because I didn't have it anymore. He was super nice and hooked my bf up with some non-orchid plants - no charge! The nursery spans 3 connected greenhouses and is spacious. The layout is easy to navigate so no worries about knocking anything over. As far as orchids go, they carry mostly cymbidiums and phalaenopsis but also carry other varieties such as dendrobiums and cattleyas as well as a few others. The variety of each type is a little lacking as they don't seem to carry collection orchids (rare, hybrids) but you can find other plants for sale like cactus, bamboo, and ponytail plants. They also have pottery for sale but I didn't see many during my last visit. Their prices are really cheap! They sell by the plant type, not by the number of spikes so I always look for the one with the most or one that'd be good for division. Last week, I picked up an Australian orchid for $18 when most places ask for $25-$30. They also have an section with orchids/plants that are done blooming or "dying" for SUPER cheap. If you're a green thumb, this is a steal since you'd know how to revive the plant. This is one of my favorite stops along hwy 92 and I'd def recommend stopping by to take a look! read more

I was also very impressed with the great prices for orchids when I visited this nursery a month ago, but after a couple of weeks I noticed mealy-bugs on my plant. None of my other indoor plants had them and this was the only new addition for years, so I'm pretty sure the plant was infected, and now I've noticed some of those bugs on my other plants. Keep an eye out for bugs on the flowers before you buy one. Mealy bugs are white and cotton-like. I thought my orchid was getting moldy at first. I tried to kill them with rubbing alcohol but they're very resistant and I'll have to throw the plant out. If you buy an orchid from here, keep it away from your other plants until you know it's safe. It might save you from having to throw out all your nice houseplants. read more

This nursery sells orchids at the Tuesday El Cerrito Farmers Market under the name Orchidholic. I stopped by the farmers market this morning to buy an orchid for a friend who had surgery a week ago. The quality and the prices were astonishing. I bought a lovely one in an unusual earth-tone palette for $15. It had three stems blooming. If it had had two blooming stems it would have been $14. There was a smaller striped one for $8 that I didn't buy because I couldn't see juggling two orchids getting back to my car. As soon as I headed for my exercise class I regretted not buying it, but it wouldn't work out to return to the market w/ my schedule today. The one I bought will have to suffice and I'm sure our friend will be pleased. read more

My friend wanted to stop by here since we were in the neighborhood to pick up some orchid plants cause she said they were cheaper and in better shape than ones you get at Trader Joe's or Home Depot. I don't know much about plants so I just came to check it out. They definitely had a lot of pretty orchids to pick from and luckily for me, they also had some other house plants there, too. I picked up a baby spider plant and 2 money (pachira) plants for $30 total. There was only one guy working there that afternoon and he pretty much left you alone to walk through aisles and aisles of plants until you had a question or was ready to pay. So that your plants don't topple over in your car on the way home, they also give you a plant tray carrier for free which was useful when I take those turns on 92 just a little too strong sometimes. :) They only take cash or credit cards and you have to pay tax so come prepared. read more
