I was looking for piano movers. We went with Bay Area Piano Movers since Michael responded quickly to my inquiry and the quote is extremely reasonable! Our move is a short distance drive (only 10 minutes drive between two homes) with a few stairs in both places. They finished the whole job in less than an hour. But that already included them pivoting the piano several times as an attempt to go through a very narrow patio with two doors, the team finally decided to take one of the door down, and lift the piano up straight so that the piano could go through. It took them about 15 minutes to move my piano from the truck to our new home - and that included the team cleaning/wiping off the dusts off from the back of the piano. My piano isn't a high-end model. Rather it's an old piano (30~ years) that my mom bought for me when I was a child and now my kid uses it to practice. I still play on that piano too. The team wrapped it well and took care of the move perfectly! I don't move my piano often - like once every 10-12 years. Mike very responsive, easy to work with, picked up the piano in a warehouse in Plesanton and delivered to my house in San Jose. One of the piano legs was loose, they even fixed it to make it more stable. I'm a professional composer, and although I'm not a good pianist, I depend on my instrument to do my work. We recently moved to SF from Boston, and the biggest selling point with the house we bought was when I saw the room where I could do my work. So when United arrived on move-in day and said I needed a dedicated piano moving team - their crew of 6 couldn't possibly do it - my heart sank. So United assembled my piano in my garage so I could make sure it had survived the move. (United's Boston-based crew had dropped the piano about 6". Thank God it was in a heavy crate at the time...) United reached out to one of their third party movers, another company that is known and respected here in the Bay Area. The owner of that company was super helpful, having me text him photos and measurements. After much back-and-forth, he said I needed a crane. So he sent a crane company, and that guy saw the house, and the power lines, and said he couldn't possibly do it. The house is built into a steep hill, and the studio where I wanted the piano is in the very back, at the bottom of the house. So craning the piano over the top of the entire house reaching all the way to the back, then lowering it - he said he didn't have a big enough crane, and even if somebody did, the power lines here made it impossible. Ugh. Was my piano ever going to make it inside? I called the original unnamed piano mover back, and he came to the house to see it in person, in case my measurements that I sent had missed something. He said "I just can't risk this. There's only one good way in, and it's extremely challenging, and my guys are going to be exhausted by the time they get to this 90 degree turn, if they can even get through here, and there's nowhere to put down the piano, and then they're stuck. I don't feel safe doing it. You should call Mike at Bay Area Piano Movers. That guy will try anything." So I called Mike. Mike was super nice on the phone and offered to come out to the house free of charge that same evening (a Friday!) to assess. He and his massive forearms arrived and he said it was a hard job, but he could do it if I had a contractor remove part of a stair bannister, and put down really good non-slip floor protection on the stairs in advance of his arrival. So that's what we did. Mike quoted a fee that seemed high, even in San Francisco. I thought maybe it was because he knew I was desperate, and that he was literally the only person in the area who would attempt this. Or maybe that's just what it costs to do something like this and do it right. But did they do it right? I'll tell you... I texted Mike the following Friday and told him that the contractor was going to do his part the next morning - Saturday. "Great. I'll be there in the afternoon, or Sunday morning at the latest. I know you're a composer, and this is important to you, so I want to get this done ASAP. But I need to have my best crew, so I have to check their availability. This job requires people who know what's about to happen before it happens." That, to me, is the definition of a good team. Mike and his crew of 4 other guys arrived exactly on time on Saturday afternoon - after several texts back and forth in advance to make sure things would be ready for him. (I know this is a small point, but how great is it that he texts?! And he's so quick to respond, if he's not literally holding somebody else's piano at the time you message him.) My piano is a Yamaha C3 Disklavier - 6'1", but heavier and more complicated than your standard 6' because of the electronics inside. Lots of tucked away wires, two computers, plus I have climate control in there. (Mike was like "nobody in San Francisco has a humidity system, you know...") The crew removed the keyboard, disconnected the Disklavier computer, the humidity system, and showed me how United had assembled the piano incorrectly. ("These rods are backwards." "Your pedals are crooked because they did this wrong, too.") Watching the team of 5 work was awe-inspiring. I mentioned a "good team" before, and this crew - this team's - communication was astonishing. Constant verbal cues - "one more inch" "down two inches" "I'm clear here" "a little more support on your end" "you're doing great" "I got it, you're clear" - were not something I anticipated somehow. They navigated the three extremely tight turns so efficiently without any hint of risk to my instrument or our new home. This thing weighs 750 pounds! They got it into place, re-assembled it (correctly this time), and even recommended a piano tech that they trust to come out and tune it. They were all so damn nice, and funny, and professional. When Mike was leaving, I teared up a little. Two other moving crews and a crane operator all told me this wasn't possible. Bay Area Piano Movers found a way to do it, and do it safely.
