Safety switch that turns off our AC unit when it gets hot outside, instead of turning off the AC unit when the pan fills with water.

Just over a year after having CAT Exteriors replace our HVAC system the fan motor for our Daikin AC unit stopped working. Fan motors should last at least ten years. When our fan motor was replaced the service tech discovered that we had a faulty safety switch in the condensate overflow pan. Instead of turning off the AC unit when the pan fills up with water like it was designed to do, it turned the AC unit off when it got hot. CAT Exteriors chose this switch when deciding what system to install. It was a very cheaply built switch that turned off a very expensive system when it was most needed. Of course they are happy to replace the switch, a switch that should work for years, as long as we pay for the labor. As we had to pay for the labor to replace a faulty fan motor that should have lasted another ten years at least. The bottom line is that CAT Exteriors chose to cut corners and is making us pay for it.

Note to Cat Exteriors

I received a cold call from their marketing people and spoke to a woman with no manners. However, I was interested because they offered me "big discounts" on exterior paint in exchange for them being able to put an advertising sign in our yard for 30-90 days, take before and after pictures, and my giving them a five star review. So I was intrigued enough to schedule an initial meeting with their pitch person. Before the scheduled meeting I did my research to be prepared. I work as a developer and construction project manager, proper meeting preparation is important if you want to get things done. They seem to only use a product called Tex-Cote Coolwall, which is a IR reflective and insulating wall coating that goes for about $350/5gal bucket and covers anywhere from 175-225 square feet in a single coat application, to 350-450 square feet in a two coat application (aka double the single coat). With primer and everything it works out to a bit over $2 per square foot just for the paint... fine, I thought, let's see what kind of discount they offer me in exchange for advertising and reviews. Our meeting was scheduled for today (2/2/2023) at 6 PM. Their scheduling person called me twice in the two proceeding days to confirm the time and to be sure my wife was going to be there too because "we need both decision makers present" is what I was told. However, I never got to meet with them because the guy was over 30 minutes late. So, at that point, I put a sign on the door saying "No thank you! You were too late w/o a call or explanation. Better luck next time. PS don't call, we're done." What kind of company goes through all that only to no call no show at pitch time?! No company I would ever work with. You want my money, then do what you said you would do... on multiple occasions. Hope Cat Exteriors can get their crap together and, as I said before, better luck next time.

Drill hole where rain was pouring in all night last night.

Worst customer service I have ever experienced…read more I purchased a home in late 2023 and shortly after, my furnace went out during winter. I had the American Home Shield (AHS) insurance and I made a claim and they contacted Redwood Mechanical who they contract with and they responded promptly. The technician was courteous and professional and gave me detailed explanation of what needed to be done. It was upwards of $10,000 job mostly covered by AHS except for some personal upgrades I would pay out of pocket for. The technician told me that he would email me on Monday probably for a grand total. This was on a Thursday. The following week I heard nothing so I called the office and a woman answered and she said she would check and get back to me. I hadn't heard back from her for a few days so I called back and left a message which went unreturned. From that point on, I was unable to get a hold of anyone at the company for about six weeks. I called several days a week, sometimes several times a day and no one ever answered the phone. I left voice messages, text messages, and email message which all went unanswered. During this time period I called AHS and let them know what was going on. They called and emailed Redwood Mechanical twice with no response and my complaint had been escalated to a higher level with AHS. At the six week mark AHS told me that if Redwood Mechanical didn't respond by the next day that they would find an alternate HVAC company to do the repair work on my furnace. The very next day I called Redwood Mechanical and they actually answered the phone. A coincidence that on the final day before they lost the contract they responded to me? I told the woman I spoke to that I had been trying to get a hold of her for six weeks. Her response was that the product hadn't come in yet, she was sick, I think she said she had to take the kids to school, etc. I was like yeah okay but SIX WEEKS with not answer to any of my messages? She admits that they "dropped the ball." They did complete the job eventually and the work was good quality and met my expectations. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt and am understanding when mishaps occur but this was the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my 59 years. I don't understand how anyone runs a business like this, ignoring a customer's call and emails for a month and a half. The only thing I could figure was one of two things: 1. Because I was using AHS and Redwood Mechanical had the contract to repair my furnace, they knew I would be there waiting regardless so they didn't care enough to make a minimal effort to "meet and exceed" their customers' expectations as stated on their website. Just put me dead last on the customer service list knowing I'd be there when they felt like dealing with me. Pretty coincidental that on the last day before losing the contract they responded to me. For all I know, the product had already come in days before but they preferred to handle other jobs first. Or 2. The other possibility is that they just don't know/don't care how to run a business. It's been about a year since I had work done and did not plan on writing a Yelp review. However, a few weeks ago I had called the office asking about type/size filter they had installed so I could get some. She told me she doesn't have the info but would ask and get back to me. And I never heard back from her. So same old same old so... 5 stars for work done 0 star for customer service.

The quote Air Tight gave me for a new furnace was less than half of the one I got from Evans, and Trevor did an excellent job explaining the different install options, and the pros and cons of repair vs replacement. Natalee was able to get me scheduled for an inspection the very next day, and Skyler showed up ahead of schedule (after checking in to make sure it was ok to be early) and finished the repair quicker than I could have hoped--despite the fact that the furnace is deep under the house, with a tiny access point in the foundation. It's so nice to have a cozy house again! The level of communication, integrity, and customer care this whole team brings to the table is beyond rare these days.

Cutting and hauling firewood and pellets is becoming less practical so we decided to have a mini split installed. We called Airtight and it's a good thing we did. I would recommend them to anyone who needs an HVAC contractor.
