My oncologist, Dr. Sudan is a gift and blessing I could never even dream of asking for. The nurses are wonderful and respect is an understood thing. I have had a couple week-long stays and the food is good! The cleaning staff are dedicated, thorough and friendly! I feel so blessed to be treated at this hospital - I would highly recommend it! Sadly, I have been to several hospitals in the GTA and Humber is definitely state-of-the-art, top-notch facility with a staff that exceeds expectations every visit!

I came in with a severe throat infection that made it impossible to talk and difficult to breathe. I even wrote everything down ahead of time to make communication easier for the staff. Before I left, I made sure to get the nurse's name because of the lack of compassion she had shown. Sharron Thomas refused to read what I wrote, rolled her eyes, mocked my words back at me, and gossiped with other staff about how "inconvenient" I was for not being able to speak. That attitude carried over to the next nurse who handled me roughly. I've never had an issue with blood work before, but this time my arm went numb, ached badly, and is still bruised. While I was sobbing and visibly struggling to breathe, she treated it like a joke -- repeatedly asking, "does it hurt?" while ignoring the most obvious signals that I was distressed and not breathing properly (me holding my hand to my throat, trying to make noise, pointing to my notepad and pen, wheezing, folding over, crying harder). Instead of stopping, she continued on as if nothing was wrong. I did try emailing Patient Relations first to find some kind of resolution. They called me, acknowledged that I couldn't speak, and yet still asked me for a voiced response... I ended up leaving the hospital in worse condition than I arrived, all because I was too scared to stay. This was one of the most dehumanizing and frightening experiences I've ever had in a hospital. If you need urgent care, I STRONGLY suggest going somewhere else-- no one deserves to be treated like that in such a vulnerable state.

My wife came here for an inpatient operation. I have heard stories about Humber river hospital or…read moreHRH and how the care here was questionable. It looks like the stories were half true. Her operation was scheduled on a Thursday at 11am, we arrived at 9 am and checked in to the inpatient area of the hospital. We waited in a very crowded waiting room with limited seating. At 11:15 she was admitted to the operation and we were told it was going to take about 2.5 hours and someone would be out when it was over to let us know how it went. FYI the hospital is very small compared to most in the GTA. The waiting room for operations is actually the front lobby of the hospital. There is a small Tim hortons and a small cafeteria on the lower level (7am-2pm) and there is no WIFI. If you plan to be waiting here for someone..bring a book, knitting, laptop, dvd player, pillow...anything to keep you amused. The closest mall is at Jane and Finch. I waited for my wife for almost 5 hours and finally after getting really worried I walked over to the surgical desk. I was told that she was out over an hour ago and was in recovery. I was a little angry that no person came out to tell us how it went. I wasn't allowed to see her for another 1.5 hours as they were short on beds. I finally saw her as she was being brought up to the inpatient area. We had asked for a private room or semi private, but since beds were in short supply she was put in a ward. I took a walk myself down the halls and saw at least 1 semi private rooms available. After she was transferred to the ward, we had ordered the TV service as she was going to be there till Saturday. We didn't get the service till Friday night. My wife told me about how some of the nurses bedside manner was questionable as her experiences during the night with other patients. The state of the hospital is in flux, as the hospital will be moving to the new location in 10 months. There is only 1 working publicly accessible elevator in the building and sometimes it can take 15 min to get from floor to floor. I have also never seen an hospital with so much equipment and garbage in the hall. I did say our experience was half bad as the emergency ward was totally the opposite of what the inpatient services was. We had to come back the next day and check in through emergency. The experience was amazing..fast service great nurses and doctors. The longest part was waiting for test results. Even though the hospital will only be around for 10 more months, I hope the quality of care for the inpatient side will take some pointers from the great staff at Emergency.

In particular I'd like to thank Dr. Pedro, my neurosurgeon, for giving me my life back. Dear Manager of Nurses…read more I hope this email finds you well. My name is Reyka and I am writing to formally express my deep disappointment with the level of care and service my mother and I received at the Emergency Room of Toronto Western Hospital during our recent visit on the night of March 7th, 2026 at 11:30pm. Before the pandemic, I held Toronto Western Hospital in high regard for its excellent doctors, nurses, and overall patient care. However, my recent experience drastically fell short of these expectations, and I feel it is important to bring this matter to your attention. Incident Details My mother, who is a breast cancer patient visiting me from Quebec and does not speak English, was experiencing extreme pain in her jaw, neck, and arm the evening we visited the ER. I gave her a 500mg Tylenol at 8:00 PM, but it failed to alleviate her pain even after 45 minutes to an hour. Concerned for her well-being, I consulted a local pharmacist and decided to take her to the Emergency Room for urgent care. We arrived at Toronto Western Hospital's ER at 11:45 PM, and she was triaged at 12:30 AM. At that point, her pain was clearly visible, with swelling on the left side of her face, and she reported her pain level as an excruciating 10 out of 10. Unfortunately, despite the severity of her condition, we waited until 4:30 AM without being seen by a doctor while other patients were attended to before her. Adding to our frustration, the nurse who conducted the triage was visibly impatient and lacked professionalism when I translated my mother's condition. She dismissed our explanations, misinterpreted the details we provided, and even displayed discomfort and annoyance on her face. This lack of empathy was deeply upsetting, especially given the vulnerability of our situation. Inappropriate Behavior by Nursing Staff When we decided to leave the ER at 4:30 AM to seek help elsewhere due to the unbearable pain my mother was enduring, a nurse made an unkind and dismissive remark: "oh you're living?! Ok bye!" This flippant attitude was shocking and unacceptable. Nurses are at the forefront of patient care, and such a lack of compassion and professionalism is not only disappointing but also harmful to the reputation of your institution. Suggestions for Improvement The behavior we experienced highlights a deeper issue in the quality of care being provided at Toronto Western Hospital. Nurses and healthcare professionals must possess not only the technical skills required for their roles but also the emotional intelligence and empathy needed to understand and alleviate the suffering of patients. I urge hospital management to: 1. Enhance Training Programs: Provide training for nursing staff on how to handle patients with language barriers, cultural sensitivities, and heightened emotional needs. 2. Prioritize Compassionate Hiring: Ensure that candidates selected for nursing roles demonstrate empathy, patience, and a true commitment to patient care. 3. Improve Triage Protocols: Review and improve the triage process to ensure that patients with severe pain and visible symptoms of distress are prioritized appropriately. Conclusion As someone who trusted Toronto Western Hospital for its reputation of excellence, I am deeply disheartened by this experience. My mother, a cancer patient, deserved better care and understanding during a moment of extreme vulnerability. I sincerely hope that my feedback will serve as a catalyst for positive change within your institution to prevent similar experiences for other patients in the future. I would appreciate it if this matter is investigated thoroughly, and I welcome a response from your team regarding the steps that will be taken to address these issues. You may contact me at Ore.reyka@gmail.com for further clarification or discussion. Thank you for taking the time to review my concerns. Sincerely, Reyka

I have two experiences to share visiting this hospital. The first was going to emergency with my…read moredad. The second was more recent getting my mom here for an endoscopy appointment. This hospital used to be called Scarborough Grace. If I'm not mistaken, Scarborough Grace Hospital used to be owned by the Salvation Army. I'm guessing that Salvation Army relinquished whatever ownership agreement that it had. Its formal name is The Scarborough Hospital - Birchmount Campus. It's a part of the Scarborough Health Network, which comprises this hospital, Centenary on Ellesmere at Neilson, and General on Lawrence Avenue East at McCowan. My first visit was during Easter Sunday several years ago. I was roasting a turkey. My dad got a nose bleed. It didn't stop after twenty minutes. We were concerned. My car was fairly new. I drove him over to this hospital that was called Grace back then. My dad was extremely careful to not get blood in my new car. It didn't matter to me. That car had upholstery protection. We never got to fully check it out. We checked in to emergency triage. It helped that my dad had a nosebleed that didn't seem to stop. We got him in to a room fast. A doctor saw him. He had his nose packed with a long ribbon that looked painful. It did stop my dad's nosebleed. My dad and I are similar with nosebleeds. We need a humidifier to keep nosebleeds away. We learned a lot that day. We both haven't had a nosebleed event in years. Last Wednesday, we made it a family affair to get my mom to this hospital for her endoscopy appointment. I offered to drive my dad's car to get us all there. When you enter the parking lot, short-term parking is on the left. It's pricy. Long-term parking is more reasonable. The maximum rate is $20, which isn't horrible. I took a ticket from the machine. The gate arm came up. I backed into a spot. We all got out of the vehicle and headed over to the admitting side for outpatients. It felt less stressful. My dad felt at east having me, so he could focus on making sure my mom was okay. I found patient registration. We are all happy waiting there for a human until a female woman whisked us over to the patient check-in kiosks. I have a love-hate relationship with said kiosks. They work well if you fit the typical use case with no exceptions. I liked that I could scan my mom's health card. When I got to the end of this check-in process, I got an error that it couldn't check my mom in. That's the hate part. The same woman came over to try and whisk us back to the kiosks. I said that I did the check-in process and it didn't work. It said that I needed a human. She helped us. It turns out that my mom got a new health card with a different two-letter set at the end of her card number. This woman corrected it. She also put me down as an emergency contact. She was great helping us get to where we needed to be. When you walk into this hospital, you are automatically on the second floor. We needed to walk down the hallway, turn right, see the Outpatient sign, and turn right. The instructions were accurate. We got her to the endoscopy clinic. The woman there was extremely nice. I had to fill out a questionnaire on behalf of my mom. My dad was relieved that he didn't have to do it. It was a two-sider. My dad had brought a printout of my mom's medication, so that saved me some writing. The woman entered all information that we gave her. She then led us over to the endoscopy unit where we waited outside. It didn't take long for my mom to get called in. The unit was small. We got her changed into a gown and onto the bed. We put a blanket over her because gowns are thin and my mom gets cold easily. My dad stayed with her in the unit. I waited outside. They put her to sleep. Both my dad and I watched her get moved into a different room for the endoscopy. We both waited outside. We got there at noon. Her appointment was for 1:30 pm. She went in for her appointment at 1:40 pm. The time estimates were on track. We saw the nurses roll my mom back to the unit. She was hooked up to a vitals monitor. She was doing great. It took her a bit of time to wake up. She was in good spirits. Endoscopy results were immediate. Everything checked out fine. We were all pleased. My mom changed out of the gown and into her regular clothes. The nurses were great giving us a bag to store her clothing. The nurses were friendly and made our experience less stressful that it could have been. My dad didn't know how to get out from this ward. Thankfully, I am better with directions. Two lefts and we were headed out the door. I paid for parking in the lobby. My dad was fascinated by this payment kiosk. I paid with a credit card before he had a chance to pay. He asked how he could pay with cash. I showed him. By the time he had his answer, there were four people behind us. Oops! We walked to the car. I inserted my paid ticket to leave the lot. My mom got the best care here. (88)

My previous experiences with this hospital were not very good at all, quite the opposite and in the negative. This experience was much better, was able to hop around and find a wheelchair no problem. The staff were super friendly and worked with a sense of urgency, when it all was said and done, the visit took about 3 hours, the only thing that I have negative to say was that the doctor at the time read my xray wrong and I got a phone call the next day telling me very bad news. The hospital was very clean and bright. Lots of parking on site Transit options are the 123 and 80 buses, and the 15 with a bit of a walk from the mall.

An urgent care centre (UCC) provides care for non emergency injuries and personal health issues. Sprains, cuts, rashes, broken fingers etc for example, as well as blocked catheters, urinary retention and post surgical complications if needed. Emergency care is provided at another site, as is inpatient care. This site provides investigative and pre operative work up, as well as rehabilitation on an outpatient basis. An army of knowledgeable volunteers and clerical staff ensure you are seen in good time. The UCC practices triage, so less urgent cases may wait a long time for treatment. These cases could probably get seen at a walk in clinic or at their own doctors. Properly utilized this can be a one stop shop. Before I retired as an RN I referred patients here appropriately and they received good care. My wife had her follow up care here after her knee replacement, and I have cardiac investigations done here. The one down side? The cost of parking, although options are available to reduce the cost for frequent attenders.

The women who "work" in the 'spiritual and mental health' care centres are horrendous. Zero professionalism or EQ displayed when my wife came seeking care for her fibromyalgia. Since being vocal about this units negligence she has since been denied clarification of her diagnosis for which she feels was not administered appropriately. I will NEVER donate another red cent to this hospital of which I was BORN in, after the way my wife was treated and spoken to.
