Embracing the surfing culture of the Santa Cruz area, Beach Hut Deli is decorated with a beach/ocean/surfing theme. All the staff were super friendly, energetic and cool to converse with. Light reggae music was playing in the background during our visit. We enjoyed two of their speciality sandwiches off their extensive menu - we ordered the Surfin' Pig and the Santa Cruz sub sandwiches. The Surfin' Pig has ham, avocado, bacon & cream cheese, with provolone cheese added when ordered as a hot sandwich. One can order with "all the fixings" or one can have the sandwich custom prepared as one wishes. Their Santa Cruz sub comes with pastrami, avocado, bacon & cream cheese, with provolone cheese added when ordered hot. Again, one can customize the toppings as one wishes. The bread was spongy and extremely fresh, as were all the ingredients on our well-assembled gourmet sandwiches which were packed with ingredients. I heard a staff member tell another customer Beach Hut freshly prepares all ingredients daily. They offer more than sandwiches: soups, salads and other specialty dishes of the day. My wife and I were up in Santa Cruz while our daughter visited her friend at UC Santa Cruz and the staff at the Best Western all suites in suggested the beach Hut deli for lunch. That was a fantastic suggestion. The vibe was incredibly chill, much like you would find at the beach and the tables were fashioned like wooden surfboards. You Go to the counter to order and then they bring the food to you. The staff was very friendly and very beach-like. They had a great menu and choices of cold or hot sandwiches, munchies, happy hour foods, and salads. The ambience of the restaurant was very nice we did go a little between dinner and lunch in the afternoon but there were still quite a few people milling around. It was very clean and each booth was separated so you could hear yourself talk; it wasn't an open floor plan. There was outdoor seating as well, which was more of an open floor plan. The food was great. They had many different sizes of sandwiches. We got the three-inch, which was more than enough for us. I got the three-inch Santa Cruz, it's a cold sandwich, but there was very little fat on the pastrami. I also got a cup of clam chowder which had a little bit of bacon on top of-fantastic. The sandwich was fantastic and just the perfect size for a soup and salad combination. My wife got the skinny dipper just without mayonnaise and onions, but it had Au jus on the side. She said it also tasted fantastic and she got the chicken poblano soup. Both soups came with bread, thinly sliced small pieces of bread but they were fantastic with the soup. She had a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, and I had one of their specialty beers. In all ohh the meal was fantastic. Couldn't have asked for a better spot in downtown Santa Cruz you've got to try this, it is fantastic, the food is great, the prices are reasonable and the soups are homemade. The ambience or the vibe as they say nowadays, was very calming. There are other locations. You might want to see if there's one nearer to you, but I can't guarantee it will have the same vibe as Santa Cruz did. read more

What a great improvement. The cuts of meat and cheese is back to normal portions and cuts, the lemon vinaigrette is not the same, but not bad like before. I want to thank the owner for responding to my previous experience and it's nice to know that this business is listening to their customers and works on improving our experience. My family just visited this location we had to rush order because they're closing for the evening. We ordered a piccolo sando, creamy chicken poblano soup and a black bean soup. The service was great and the food was good. The decor is even cute ..But the only thing my kid ordered was the bean soup. Now we know that some places black bean soup can be spiced, we just wish that it was listed as SPICY black bean soup or have side of cream to cool it down. I usually enjoy extremely spicy food, but even I did not enjoy the spicy level of this soup. It did come with a sliver of avocado but they wasn't enough to sneeze at. My son's favorite sandwiches for many years have been from our local Beach Hut Deli. Since he moved out of the country for college, he has missed it! When we recently stayed in Santa Cruz, he was thrilled that there was a Beach Hut Deli very close to our hotel. He ended up choosing it to get his last meal before flying back to school. This location is super cute. Like all of them, the decor is beach-themed. There is a "tiki bar, " TVs showing surfers in action, and a free shuffleboard to play! This game came in handy because we had to wait quite a while for our sandwiches to be made. There was just one server making our sandwiches so I appreciate that she took care to make them. My son ordered the same sandwich he always gets, the Surfin' Bird (turkey, avocado, bacon, and cream cheese) with everything. My husband and I shared an extra large California with everything, one of their yummy vegetarian creations that has lots of avocado. Our sandwiches were fresh, huge, and delicious! There's alllllll this alcohol and really nice surfboard tables and music and then the sandwich is not even anything but white bread shredded lettuce and the worst possible bad quality discount store nitrite fake preservative sliced meat all fake tasting . I can get in a sandwich at least once a week for at least three years. I can't get enough of it and the staff is always friendly very clean. We arrived during a quiet time after the lunch rush, but it took so long to get our food I thought they forgot the order. My partner got the dip, I got a "Sunburn," a chicken sandwich with bacon and buffalo sauce. Both sandwiches were really bland and are not sitting well. Pretty solid sandwich price is a little bit high but I get it it's in a tourist area. The cream cheese on. Pastrami is new for me but it went well. The nachos were to go and large but a little overpriced around $16. Advice is to eat the nachos right away or at the restaurant itself because they can get soggy with the container. Very clean and you need a code for the bathroom which is 8999. Your order at the registers and someone will bring your food or beers to your table . I assume this place gets real busy lunchtime and on popular holiday weekends. Very close risk downtown and Trader Joe's on Front street . I'm writing the review because the customer service was amazing! I placed my order the night before to be ready for pick up at 10:45 but got out of my class early. I called around 9:50 hoping someone might pick up (they don't open until 10am) - and someone did!! The employee who picked up was super accommodating and said they'd start the order asap. I love sandwiches and I was trying to find a good place to try near the beach that wasn't your typical subway or a Panera and I saw this place. Me and my cousin came here. It was our first time we ordered three different sandwiches. I believe I got the surfing bird or something like that as well as the hobbi. And he got one of the spicy ones, and these were some of the best sandwiches I've ever had. They are super packed. They are not shy with filling your sandwich at all. They're really big although I believe instead of my cousin ordering a large he could've just gotten a regular because they seemed about the same size anyways and even the small sandwich is pretty big itself so it's well worth your money. They actually give you a good amount of food for what you spend unlike other places and I admire that. And the lady in the front who helped us was super nice, was actually helpful with us ordering our food and I am very grateful for that. read more

Solid bread choices: French Roll, Wheat Roll, Garlic Cheese Bread, Sliced Wheat, and Gluten Free. The GF is decent. Small complaint: no Dutch crunch. Some crave worthy sandwiches: Surf in' Bird: Turkey, avocado, bacon and cream cheese. Santa Cruz: Pastrami, avocado, bacon and cream cheese. (Cream cheese is a theme) CalI Cheese Steak: Roast beef, Monterey Jack, cream cheese, onions, and peppers. Righteous Reuben: I sub the cheese bread with a French roll (there's no rye) and easy on the spread. The fountain drinks are all-you-care-to-drink. The chip selection was modest but I've seen some over-the-top cookies (none on a recent visit). It's crowded on weekends. Line moves quickly but you'll wait 10+ mins for your food.
