Beautiful architecture associated with History... It is a small neighborhood in the Boston city, hardly 1 Km from Boston Commons. It is located on a small hill and seems picture perfect like movies. The tree-lined streets include eclectic boutiques, antique shops, and eateries. There are many antique/souvenirs shops and cafes in this neighborhood, with old-style brick houses in the straight lines leading up to the hill, makes everything mesmerizing We walked down Commonwealth Street which is designed like the streets of Paris. Absolutely gorgeous. While wandering through the area, it is easy to get a sense of how life may have been a couple hundred years ago. Boston commons- State house- chapel -beacon Hill, everything is near to each other, so wear comfortable shoes, or you can take the bike for few bucks. A recommendation is to explore this area by foot. read more

During the week that we stayed in the Beacon Hill Wyndham, Beacon Hill was just across the street along the south periphery of Cambridge Street. Cambridge Street makes up the north border for Beacon Hill which is bounded by The Esplanade and Charles River to the west, Beacon Street with Boston Gardens and Boston Commons to the south, and Bowdoin Street to the east. Two words describe Beacon Hill: charming and Historic. A walk through Beacon Hill is a walk back to the late 1700s and 1800s. A walk along the hilly streets of Beacon Hill is through a realife painting of cobblestone streets alongside gas lit street lamps, brick sidewalks, a green square, a meeting house, and Mount Vernon Street what Henry James called the most civilized street in America. A walk on the hilly streets of Beacon Hill is also a walk through Louisburg Square: The wealthiest address in Boston. A walk through Beacon Hill also passes the Massachusetts State House (Capitol Building), Cheers, the African-American Museum, Boston Commons, Boston Public Gardens, and The Esplanade. With its hills and street car scale historic buildings near the water, Beacon Hill reminded me of San Francisco. Here, the most photographed street is Acorn Street where in San Francisco it is Lombard Street. The majority of the time I spent in Beacon Hill besides the Wyndham Hotel that was on the border of the district, was on Charles Street and Cambridge Street. When you tour Beacon Hill the majority of the cobblestone streets and brick sidewalks connect to Federal style homes. Charles Street is the Main Street of Beacon Hill that serves the commercial needs of the district. Charles Street runs along the base of the hill. Years ago before infill expanded Boston, Charles Street was along the river. Today the neat thing about Charles Street is that all the businesses comply with the design guidelines that retain the historic character of Beacon Hill. For example the Peet's Coffee, Starbuck's, and 7-Eleven acclimatize to the Federal style architecture. Lined up along Charles Street from the MGH/Beacon Hill Transit Station at Cambridge Street at the north to Boston Commons and Boston Public Gardens at the south are charming mom and pop shops, restaurants, Charles Street Meeting House, and upscale food shops. On my walks along the brick sidewalks I enjoyed looking at the store fronts and window displays. I enjoyed looking at the perpendicular narrow streets that climbed Beacon Hill towards Louisburg Square, the Hephzibah Swan Houses, and Nichols House Museum. Most of all I enjoyed the Beacon Hill points of interest that Charles Street led me near: Cheers, Boston Commons, and Boston Public Garden. At the southeast extreme of Charles Street, I enjoyed seeing Beacon Hill from Bostons Freedom Trail. The high water mark on the Boston Freedom Trail walk by Beacon Hill is the Massachusetts State House. This is the Capitol Building of Massachusetts. My biggest regret is that I never made it Acorn Street, the most photographed street in Boston. To save somebody else from this regret, I highly recommend taking the time to see Acorn Street when your in Boston. Beacon Hill might be Bostons wealthiest address. However, it is a district waiting to be explored by the wealthy in spirit and adventure. Beacon Hill is just one more reason why I heart Boston. read more

Why Yelp a neighborhood? Because it's the one of the most desirable and picturesque neighborhoods in the country. Beacon Hill isn't just a neighborhood. It's a tourist destination. It has history, it has charm, it has old world style. What a wonderful neighborhood. Small streets with tall ivy covered brick brownstones with rooftop patios, adorable shops, beautifuly maintained buildings whose historical value is as obvious in its architecture as it is with streets like Revere. For my Bay Area buddies Boston is impressive. Beacon Hill is like the SF Marina's wealthy cousin. I see more Europe in Boston than i do California and as a big city girl Beacon Hill is the type of neighborhood i dream of living in someday. Beacon Hill is a historic neighborhood of Federal-style rowhouses and is known for its narrow, gas-lit streets and brick sidewalks. I like the architecture, the narrow streets, the small little shops, the people watching, and the view. As for ever living here, I'm reminded of some advice that my Father once gave me: If you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it. The neighborhood is named for the location of a former beacon atop the highest point in central Boston, once located just behind the current site of the Massachusetts State House. And because of that prominent location, the term "Beacon Hill" is also often used by the local news media to refer to the state government or the legislature. The Unitarian Universalist Association is also Headquartered here of which my parents remain members. Beacon Hill is also included in the route taken by the fictional Mrs. Mallard and her children, depicted in Make Way for Ducklings, a book for children by Robert McCloskey. The story is commemorated every year in May by a parade through Beacon Hill to the Boston Public Garden. read more

Although most of the building just apartment on the Beacon hill, I just like to have a walk here. The area just looks very different compared with the rest of the city. Most of the apartment just look rich and expensive, It really does remind me some neighborhoods back in UK. This area actually has a long histroy as background, if you are interested at it. you can find the Founders Memorial in the Boston Common and read about it. If you travel here by bike, that you got to be careful. Even For just walking, I could really slide down from the top of the hill to the end of the street, without trying. the hill isn't really high, but just quite tilt. it could be funy when there are not that much cars around. Around this area, there are couple other sights shouldn't be miss, such as Massachusetts State house, that place just looks amazing. and some othe mounuments. And the shopping street just across the Boston Common. in case you like to buy something. I really like this place, very diferent and historical. read more

Awesome 3 years spent in BH - Anderson and Revere - Rent was ridiculous for the location... considering Louisburg Square was 2 blocks from me... Pro - Historical awesomeness... Cute lanes... Like, 10 pubs within walking/staggering distance... WF across Cambridge St... Red line stop.... so awesomely central ! Longfellow bridge... Charles River Esplanade... great running route along the river... best in the world ! Great hill training ! The Paramount, Upper Crust, and Cafe Vanille on Charles St... The super booze shop on Charles, and Savenor's !!!! ... Well - Charles St is just plain awesome Short walk to the Common... Very short walk to work.... Con - Not much... Winter can be brutal... snow on sidewalk... piled high ! Sucks to own a car... (I didn't).. especially in the winter Rodents... This quaint little historic neighborhood in Boston is wicked awesome! They ain't kidding when they say it's a hill- I came tearing through here on one of those city rental bikes, the Hubway, and I quickly ran out of steam riding up this huge hill! This picturesque part of town exhibits all kinds of cool features that my neighborhood doesn't! The streets are cobblestone, and the sidewalks are brick. It does make for interesting bicycling trying to navigate those cobblestones, especially if going downhill. The people here are friendly. While I was panting and panting from the helluva bike ride, a few people came by and cracked wise- one pointed me to a drinking fountain in a park. The architecture here is really cool- a Federalist style where the streets predate cars. There are lots of local and small businesses up in here, so be sure to check them out! Parking looks like a challenge through here, but that's part of the charm. On the other end of Beacon Hill lies the Massachusetts State House. read more

This part of Boston is very pretty and yelling to be photographed, but beware of the word "hill", because in fact it's full of almost vertical hills that you have to go up and down, and you'll end up exhausted in less than 10 minutes. I thought I'd end up in heaven as I was sweating, and I couldn't enjoy the rest of the day in Boston because my feet were killing me. The tourist trolley is not an option, as it can't get into the narrow streets. My recommendation is to make it your last stop before taking a taxi to your hotel. It's good for kids if you want to exhaust them :) read more

Walking here on this beautiful day in early fall, my tie was caught by the soft breeze and smacked me right in the middle of my face. This pretty much sums up how I feel about this area, it's pretty and nice, but sort of pretentious, and also that sort-of-trying-to-be-pretentious thing, which is not good and actually worse than true pretension because it smacks of being pathetic. However, it really is pretty. The Common is great for walking, and the bums are pretty good here. I like the woman that yells "Good Morning Happy Day!!" very much. The lights in the trees during winter are nice, and watching people skate on the pond. I watched a squirrel with some sort of nut in his mouth that was bigger than his head spend about 2 whole minutes sitting in the middle of the path staring straight at me. I was getting scared, I didn't know if it was going to freak out. They are fast. Of all the places to just sort of walk around in and not really do anything, I think this is my favorite in Boston. The Gardens are absolutely fantastic, and I feel like people are friendlier when they are in there. Some people sitting in the low branch of a tree had me take their picture and even asked if I wanted to get in one with them, which of course I did. Tasteful and well-done gardening, I think. A good place for a date later on, but not a first date. That would be cheesy, especially if you rode the swan boats. Actually, that would be pretty funny. read more

This is my favorite neighborhood in Boston. Cons- It will cost you your arm, leg and first born or if you are lucky you will find a studio with like a half a window, 2 sq feet bathroom and a counter for a kitchen for a mere 1500. Besides the price, the only other annoyance is the upper class women and their two-stories-triple -decker-5000- dollar- strollers and newborns in cashmere onesies. The thing is, the streets are way too narrow to accommodate the mommies and mere mortals. Thus, beware of the upcoming stroller. Pros- -absolutely breathtaking -lots of places to eat -the biggest whole foods -close to the garden and the common -pretty -amazing architecture -charm -more cute dogs (think Charlottes dog in sex and the city) per block then people -old ladies in vintage Chanel suits -pretty Maybe one day I will make enough money and I will stay here. Or maybe I should hunt for a man whose family owns property there. Nah, Ill just work hard. read more

Despite the fact that Beacon Hill is home to expensive restaurants and shops with stuff I don't need, as well as rich people who pay more for their houses than I will probably ever make in my life, I still love it. Why? Because I am a history nerd and Beacon Hill is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. There are so many cool homes here, as well as the African-American History Trail and the African-American history museum. Get a historical tour of the neighborhood through one of the organizations that offers them (Boston By Foot, for one) and impress your friends/family next time you walk through the neighborhood. read more

Beacon Hill is an incredible neighborhood to live in. Whether you're on the side closer to Charles St. or the State House, it's an idyllic neighborhood with a variety of interesting stores and places nearby. It's also a great area to walk around, and to find stuff. Charles St. has a variety of shops and food-related establishments; Cambridge St connects you to the all-important grocery/convenience options, and the State House area has a variety of pubs and bars just on the cusp of Downtown. The best part of being in Beacon Hill is to live here. Yes, I live in a closet. But it's a nice closet, and it's convenient to every single line. Red, Green, Orange, Blue, Silver. All 5. All of this is what makes the Hill both convenient and overall wonderful. read more

This neighbourhood, how could you not give it 5 stars? Why should we be even rating a neighbourhood? Anyways, Beacon Hill is the central area for where abolitionists were during the time of the Underground Railroad. It houses the "Black Heritage Trail" which includes points of interest and houses that were once significant to American history. It also houses one of "America's most photographed streets"...which is Acorn Street. Cobblestone walkways, which are extremely hard to walk on" are a rare sight, it's cool to be actually able to see it and all of its glory. Keep in mind that people actually live in these houses. This neighbourhood is beautiful! Would love to see it in the Spring. Worth a visit if you have time! read more

I'm totally biased because I lived here for two years. But Beacon Hill is a beautiful, historic neighborhood. Notice how I said neighborhood? Yes, it's a real neighborhood, with families, young couples, young professionals, and college students. Close to everything downtown and anything important you want to see or do... not sure what else you could ask for in a neighborhood. I would walk to anywhere - North End, Aquarium, Faneuil - you get the point. My only peeves are that trash collection days end up with a lot of trash on the streets (instead of the garbage truck) and it's a little crowded. And rent is expensive. Located right next to the Boston Public Garden, we just walked up Charles Street which seems to be the main street for Beacon Hill. Lots of interesting shops and restaurants. Hung a right on Pinckney Street and walked down to Louisburg Square, a small private park that's fenced off. Fun just to wander around Beacon Hill and see the beautiful homes. read more

I'm spending my summer on Anderson St., subletting a room in a 2-br apartment for $850/mo. Expensive? For the size of the room, OH yeah. For Beacon Hill? A steal. I should be in JAIL, man. But, it IS possible if you look hard enough. I've even heard of places for less. Go figure! ANYWAY. Beacon Hill is the best place I've ever lived, hands down. I'll cry when I leave in August (and homegirl does NOT cry). -It's beautiful. It's a historic district and you won't ever forget it. Yes, it reeks of unfathomably wealthy stock brokers and insurance agents, but more than that, it reeks of old Boston and what it was back in the day, when it was one of the most important places in the U.S. -It's CONVENIENT! I consider "walking distance" about 20 minutes, maybe a little more if I'm feeling ambitious. That means that Back Bay, Downtown, the North End, the South End, Chinatown, the Financial District, the Waterfront, and Cambridge are all basically within walking distance of Beacon Hill. And, let's face it, 90+% of your destinations in Boston will be in one of those areas. -It's upscale. This is not my way of being snobby; it just means that a) it's safe [I'm a young woman and I walk alone at night without feeling even remotely threatened] and b) all of the establishments in the area are extremely nice [good restaurants, good shops, good bars, good hotels, etc.]. -For the most part, it's quiet. I occasionally forget that I like smack in the middle of a major city. -There's SO MUCH TO DO in the neighborhood! Like I said, anywhere you go to grab a bite, yes it'll be pricey, but it'll also be good. Any bar you go to, you'll meet some dashing young professional, or at least get a great drink. And you'll always be near a T stop. Really, I love this place. I hope I get a chance to live here again someday... Because, to be honest, if I were spending any more than three consecutive months here, I'd run out of money and be evicted and die on the sidewalk outside of one of the expensive liquor stores. But, once I have a decent income... We'll meet again one sweet day, Beacon Hill. ♥ read more

Beacon Hill is the most central location in downtown Boston - you just can't beat this location if you want to be within a 15 minute walk to: Back Bay, Downtown Crossing, the Financial District, Theatre District, MGH, Faneuil Hall, Government Center, and the West End. I had a chance to hit Beacon Hill the past weekend. It was very beautiful due to the fall foliage. All the trees were a combination of fiery red, orange, and yellow. The weather was perfect as well.. around 65 degrees in the day. The squirrels in the park are very friendly.. almost too friendly actually. I stuck my hand out and it came thinking I had food.. when it discovered I had none I think he started humping my finger. read more

I'd love to live here, but not in one of those teensy weensy little apartments that one finds for rent, where you can't get a TV up the narrow stairs, or pay a fortune for 50 square feet to be shared amongst three people.
