We visited Silver City KOA last weekend and are still having withdrawals! I am not a huge fan of…read morecamping but was happy to stay in their deluxe cabin, which has an AC unit and was the perfect amount of space for my husband and two small children. There was one full size bed with 1 bunkbed with a bathroom and shower. There was also a fridge, toaster, microwave and a coffee maker. There are 8-9 cabins total and space for RVs to park. The campground felt safe for the kids to run around, which brought my normal anxiety level down. It was nice that the kids were tablet free because there were endless amounts of games and activities to do in their game room such as PacMan, Foosball, and Ping Pong. There is also a playground with an open field to run around, a sandbox and a basketball court. Then there's the gift shop. We almost bought the entire store from all the cool apparel, accessories, souvenirs and gifts that were there. What made the whole experience worth it were the hosts, Josh and Mary. They treated us like we were family and were very hospitable. Although our trip was short, we were able to check out downtown and visit the City of Rocks, which is about a 30 min drive from the campground. Parking is $5 for the day. I would definitely come back to Silver City KOA annually!

I'm glad the Silver City KOA was only about 10% occupied because they have a grand total of TWO…read moretoilets (for men). Waiting is a minor annoyance but if the place had been half full, my gosh! They have three shower stalls, but one closed/out of order, and another with sad trickle of hot water, so essentially one working shower. Again, I was OK with some waiting, but if the place had been half full, I would've never gotten a shower! Note that shower stalls are small enough that taller men will be unable to bend over to wash feet. Note also that all three stalls drain to a single drain, so if or when more than one shower is functional, you may have your neighbor's soapy waste water running under your feet. Feels very unhealthy! I would Have opted for a dip in the swimming pool when the bathroom was occupied and funky, but the pool was closed "indefinitely" (and someone said it has been for quite awhile. KOA might be fine for some folk with self contained mobile home RVs (the primary clientele here) because they don't have to wait for the shower, and have more sound insulation. The noise of generators combined with highway noise makes this a poor choice for tent travelers like me. After a couple of days, I moved to a Motel 6 down the street. For an extra +$11, it was quieter, with AC, a clean bed, and the shower was Taj Mahal by comparison!

That stretch of river is very hot and has a lot of bugs and no shade. It was 100F out, as it often is in June, and when we reached the pull-out, we were unable to get hold of the guy to pick us up and had to call a friend to take us back to our car! The owner, David, literally said he had fallen asleep. Giving the company another chance, the second expedition was a float on Caballo Lake, with storytelling, in the evening. That was ok, although we didn't stay for the campfire afterward. The third time we went with the outfitter, we were just doing a float from La Llorona Park to the Calle del Norte bridge, at the end of which, it was impossible to steer toward the take-out, we had to get out of our tubes to not continue floating downstream, it was very hard to get my footing, I lost my inflatable water bottle, and I would never feel comfortable traveling with this outfitter again. People drown in the river--the current can be more challenging than you think.
