My day started of terribly with some qualms, but I didn't let it stop me from visiting my favorite place for literally bear claws. This is a small local business in the East Bay, and I've been going here for years because I love bear claws! It was my first time getting their iced coffee though. Price: I thought it was fair. Both items were less than $10. I think I paid ~$6. Service: I was immediately greeted by the worker once I came in. Because I knew what I wanted to get, this person was very quick about it. Food: Bear claws here are a 11/10. I got too lazy to toast it but I bet it'd taste like a 100/10 if I actually had the patience. Iced coffee was a little bit mixed to me. I used to like very sugary iced coffee drinks but now I'm all about the caffeine boost. At first, I thought I didn't like it, but actually, it's not too sweet that you can't taste the coffee taste but not too bitter that you only taste the coffee. The Bear Claw Bakery & Cafe is such a cute bakeshop located in downtown Pinole. I've been eyeing this place for a while now. I decided to stop by yesterday on 03/23/21. I got a Ham & Salami sandwich and a buttermilk coffee cupcake. The sandwich was so fresh and tasty! As far as the cupcake, it was the best-baked good I had in so long. It's not overly sweet and it is a great combination of when crunchy meets a moist texture. Additionally, the girls working the front counter were so friendly and amiable. I was greeted with a warm welcome into the shop. Overall, I was amazed by the taste and quality of the sandwich and the cupcake. The people were so sweet and the shop was adorable! This is your old school bakery. I had a sweet tooth this morning and decided to stop on by. I asked the clerk what she liked and got a danish with lightly golden brown sugar on the surface. This was mildly sweet. I also bought a chocolate twist. The twist is more chewy than I've experienced before. I would prefer a less denser version. Although it didn't knock my socks off this is still a place worth visiting. It's small and homey looking and located in old Pinole. The pastries do go together with scrambled eggs. read more

The ambiance of the place is old and cute, which is fine but there's a lot of stuff everywhere, and the bakery items aren't displayed nicely so it gives it a feeling of it not being clean if that makes sense. I'm sure it's not true but it gives me old donuts in a liquor store vibes mixed with cluttered cracker barrel. Woke up extra early to get a breakfast treat, I got the hibernator sandwich which i've been wanting to try for like a year. It was delicious, although i ordered it on a croissant as the bread but at first it came on a sourdough roll, no biggie though mistakes happen and they remade it without making a deal of it. I also got a chai latte with a shot of espresso in it and it's the best chai i've ever had. Starbucks has nothing on their chai, you can taste all the spices and it's not super sweet which is perfect. The pastries were the worst part of the trip though, not bad but just okay. I got a bear claw after craving one for a couple weeks but this one just didn't hit the spot. It was bland, i've never had a bland bear claw before so i was pretty disappointed. I got charged $27 for 12 dozen cookies/brownies when the website said $24.75. Your website should be updated first before you start charging higher prices. I questioned the cashier about the discrepancy in prices and she said the website has not been updated. I think out of fairness, you need to charge the lower price. No customers like to be fooled with deceptive pricing strategies. Service on both visits were a bit slow so be prepared to wait a bit for your food. Or plan your visit by calling in your order especially for the baked goods. Sometimes they run out of stuff so you can make sure they have your item there! Other than that, the food is good. This was the cutest little bakery! Came in after leaving the farmers market across the street. The young lady who greeted us was very warm and friendly. She explained a few things on the menu and we ended up selecting deli sandwiches and a Cesar salad. The sandwiches were smaller than we expected, but surprisingly filling - delicious too. The salad was so good! The Cesar dressing tasted a little zesty by itself, but once I tossed the salad with it it was perfect. The chicken and croutons were also so well seasoned. Since I got the UberEats Pass, I decided to try out Bear Claw Bakery. On the app, it said that their Buttermilk Coffee Cake was a ~100-year-old recipe, so I had to check it out. I also got a Reubenini sandwich (requested no onions). The items arrived decently intact. They didn't come in a larger bag, so the coffee cake was in a paper/cardboard box and the sandwich was in a paper bag. Sustainable packaging- awesome. Buttermilk Coffee Cake ($9): I thought that I was just ordering a slice, but wow it was a whole cake! Approximately the size of a pie and was stored in a pie-sized box as well. Had a nice sweet glaze over the top, very fluffy, doesn't taste like a traditional coffee cake. There aren't any crumbs like what you would usually think of. Reubenini ($10.75): Had onions in it even though I had requested no onions, but no biggie- not allergic or anything, just a preference. Still tasted pretty good and they were high quality red onions. Portion was a bit smaller than a usual deli sandwich you would get from a sandwich shop, and it wasn't anything out-of-this-world, so I thought it was a bit pricey for what I got. The inside is small with only two tables. I also got a bear claw and another pastry that was bread with cinnamon and crumb topping. I was disappointed with both pastries. I want more almond flavor from the bear claw. There was very little flavor and not super sweet, which I can appreciate. So it was just dry bread really. My mom came home from work with a tuna melt from here and I had to get it again! I asked my dad to buy for my brother and I so I can only write about my experience with that. It sucks they're not on DoorDash though! I do want to point out that they have some weird hours. I don't like how some days they close really early at 2pm because I'm still at work. Was in the mood for some tasty breakfast sandwiches and my coworker recommended this spot to me. I heard good things about them. Love supporting local mom and pop shops, and they have been around for awhile. I ordered the Hibernator and Smoky B breakfast sandwiches. Very filling and probably could split one sandwich with my friend. Hibernator had potatoes in it so it was really heavy. Smoky B had a kick of spice to it. You get to choose what bread you want. They listed a variety of bread options and I ended up getting sourdough. I came around 11am and there was a small line. It went pretty fast but sandwiches took around 15-20 minutes. It was worth the wait but the bread was a little on the denser side than I would like but still yummy. I overheard one of the employees telling a customer you can call in and place an order ahead to avoid waiting. You can also phone in to ask what they have and they can save it for you. When I got there, a lot of their pastries, crossaints, and donuts were gone. They had no more bearclaws which I was hoping to get. Next time, I'll try to come in earlier to try their bearclaws and their mochas. One customer said she drives all the way here from Pleasant Hill to get their mochas. We just moved to Pinole this week (into our very first house) and after a day of moving and packing and virtual teaching decided to explore and found what can only be described as a neighborhood gem! We ordered the Hot Chic and Tuna Melt Paninis and both were absolutely delicious, packed with flavor, and perfectly toasted! The gentleman behind the counter was so helpful and sweet. He described all of the specials and told us about possible breakfast options for our inevitable return. He also offered us two small buttermilk coffee cakes free of charge to welcome us to the neighborhood. How CHARMING! The cakes were super moist and perfectly sweet. We admittedly were back within a couple of days to grab breakfast. We ordered the Hibernator Breakfast Sandwich - eggs, cheese, sausage, bacon, AND tator tots on one sandwich, pressed on a panini press...HEAVEN! We also ordered their specialty Bear Claw pastry to share and it was so "beary" good. I can honestly say I'm in love with this quaint community bakery and have found my favorite place. My husband and I love Bear Claw Bakery. It's a fantastic family-owned bakery that's been supporting the community for over 60+ years! We come in for the strawberry, cream-cheese filled cronuts, the cinnamon buns, and a mocha. TBH, everything is yummy. There's also cozy seating inside. We even got our wedding sheet (strawberry and whipped cream) cake from Bear Claw. Our guests demolished it and everybody complimented how light, fluffy, and fresh the cake was.
