After a long flight and additional drive, this was our first stop to eat. We'd been encouraged to try the raspberry shakes anywhere that was open in town as this was mid week and after peak tourist season. One of the only other places open had a long line outside. There were a few cars outside the Bear Trapper, which included a local law enforcement vehicle, so we figured it would be good. My husband passed on the shake, but since raspberry is one of my favorite flavors, I couldn't resist. It was wonderful and I could barely eat my lunch. My husband ordered the fish and shrimp basket. The servings were larger and more filling than we expected for the price. We liked that we weren't rushed as it was great to have some room to lean back and stretch out. read more

We have been here 5 or 6 times over the last year. I really like this place. They are always busy but we never wait long to be seated. The staff is always friendly and do a good job. Everything I have tried has been really good. Love the chicken Santa Fe, French Dip. Omelet was good too. The hot beef sandwich was good. Good crispy onion rings. The prices are fair. Let's start with the pros, it has really fun Bear Lake decor, the prices are fairly decent. The cons the food is barely decent. I ordered the Rasberry Glazed Chicken, and rice. The chicken comes out it and it's like if you cut the tip off a breast, and put it on a plate and literally there was two spoonfuls of old tasting rice. The vegetables were frozen, and barely cooked. As I'm writing this I am feeling a little sick. My husbands meal was a little better it was the seafood Alfredo, that was mildly decent. The employees seem a little disgruntled, and ornery. I think there are better places in town to spend your $$. read more

Bear Trapper Family Steak House is a Mom and Pop-style restaurant located in Garden City. It's run by the same folks who also operate the nearby pizza restaurant. This past weekend we called the day before and made a reservation at 6:30pm for a large group. Unfortunately when we arrived our table wasn't ready and we ended up waiting until after 7pm before we were finally seated... This was not a good start to the evening's dinner... After being seated we placed our orders. For Valentine's Day they were offering a Sweetheart Dinner for only $30, which consisted of two entrees, one appetizer, and pineapple upside-down cake for desert. Our appetizer choice was mozzarella sticks. They were fine, but nothing special. For dinner I ordered the sirloin steak with green beans and a baked potato and my wife ordered the seafood pasta. The steak itself was unfortunately, pretty mediocre. The meat was tough and not very flavorful. The green beans were also not good. The one saving grace was the baked potato, which was good. But then again, it's pretty hard to have a bad baked potato -- throw cheese and bacon on almost anything and it's good, right? My wife said the seafood pasta was pretty good, although the portion was pretty small. The pineapple upside-down cake was the best part of the meal and it was very good. For $30 the Sweetheart Dinner was a good price but the food itself was pretty mediocre, as I already explained. I don't think I'll be going back to the Bear Trapper Family Steak House anytime soon. read more

Rolls came out and were clearly not entirely freshly baked, just out of a package which would have been acceptable if it wasn't stale (jam and butter were awesome) I got Shepard's pie, it was school cafeteria effort. Bowl of meat and gravy (not bad) with frozen cubes vegetables mixed in, two scoops of mash potatoes on top with melted cheese. Wasn't even baked to make the potatoes a crust. Wife got prime rib, it was above average and the fries were awesome. Then her fresh frozen vegetables were cold. I don't mean didn't stay warm, i mean the weren't boiled long enough to warm the center and clearly they were just from a frozen bag. Way to expensive for quality, and I was heart broken. Small town diner and I wish I had just got a fast food burger. Not the end of the world but just know what you are getting into. Don't think you will ever see this place on diners dives and drive ins. read more

The most polite staff we have ever come across. It was a Saturday night and we walked in without a reservation and knowing we will would have to wait and being just fine with that, they continued to check on tables to see if one was open we could have sooner than the estimated time they gave us. And given we hadn't eaten there before, we were just hungry and didn't want to drive somewhere else to wait that same amount of time, I will say that after eating there, I would wait for the food that we just ate. One of the best French dip sandwiches I've ever had and my husband had their steak and it was cooked perfectly. Their raspberry lemonade was also delicious. Would recommend making a reservation if you don't want to wait, but again worth it. read more

If you choose to eat here, don't ask for an extra dinner roll. After our son had finished his mini corn dogs and fries, he wanted another dinner roll. He was brave enough to ask for one and they said that they could not do that. We offered to pay and they would not give him another dinner roll. Then, there was a full-length hair in my mashed potatoes and gravy. Gross. The customer service we received was abysmal. read more

I came here in the off season because there weren't many other restaurants open in town. Decor was cute, that is the only positive thing I can really say. Service was not friendly, and it took at least 5-10 minutes to even get greeted by my server. I ordered the vegetable penne Alfredo, and it tasted like something that would be served in a hospital or nursing home. The dish was just above room temperature when served. The sauce was so bland I had to dump pepper on it and ask for a side of cheese to give it any flavor at all, pretty sure the Alfredo sauce came from a can or jar. I've had Lean Cuisines that tasted better than this. The pasta was over cooked. To top it all off I GOT VIOLENTLY SICK WITH FOOD POISONING THE NEXT DAY. I know that I was sick from here because it was the only thing I had consumed outside of my own kitchen in the past 24 hours. I wouldn't recommend this place to my enemies, it should be shut down for improper handling of food. read more

We were sat and then forgotten. While waiting, I noticed a few kids no older than 13 were serving and bussing tables. And a employee woman about 24 was bussing a table while staring me down with intentions of not stopping anytime soon. Hot plates finally came and we're delivered by the young girls. I won't ever come here again and when bear lake has few options this is something I am willing to avoid. I was told by my whole family that it was a bad choice but my love and I ignored hungrily. Closest place in lake city. Good food. Good prices. We went on a holiday and was very noisy inside with large families. No privacy separators between booths. Don't seem to have as big of a selection. I could be wrong. Prime rib was excellent. I got the queen size. Plenty big as we had sides. The chicken Alfredo was ok. My wife said the chicken was a little dry. Overall was good. The side salad could have had more tomatoes. So this is a good causal dinner place. No need getting dressed up here. read more

My husband and I ate at Bear Trappers on 9-1-2022 and we had a great meal. He had the ribs which just fell off the bone (he is very picky about his ribs) and I had the pulled pork sandwich an onion rings. He said the ribs were delicious and my pulled port was really good also. The fries and onion rings were delicious also. The staff was really friendly and checked to see if we needed anything else. I recommend going to Bear Trappers as the food and staff are great and the menu had many choices. read more

For tourst town off seaon, I felt the food was good and the service was great. It's a small town cafe, not a celebrity chef owned restaurant in Aspen. Our waitress ,Jen, was pleasant and the atmosphere was comfortable. I had the homemade chili and club sandwich with a few shared coconut shrimps from my wife's appetizer. All three were good. My wife claims the herb chicken with raspberry glaze was excellent. The only complaint from our party was from my son who felt the chocolate milkshake was too thick. He's 9. He's picky. You know the kind that you're hoping comes in a nice thin moist tortilla and instead it's a thick, dry, cracked up tortilla that you try to save by plastering the salsa on it. Yeah... It wasn't that! Visiting bear lake area for a couple days. The staff here were very friendly and and helpful in food options. This place seemed to have locals that come here a lot. I offered my food and to my surprise wow my plate was full and food was out in a good time the only bad thing here was that I never got a refill on my drink when food was brought out my waitress told me then the kitchen was out of certain thing for my meal. I was really happy to find this place. I came for a pre race pasta meal. There is a variety of items to chose from on the menu. I was brought to freshly baked dinner rolls with butter and raspberry when I sat down. I ordered the chicken alfredo for dinner. They served a small raspberry sorbet before the main meal to cleanse the pallet. I was not complaining about that treat. The petite size of the alfredo was just enough for me. The taste was just right, not too creamy. The chicken was moist and the breadstick went nice with the meal. I will say I was "carb ready" for my race the next day. When you go to Bear Lake there isn't a ton of variety for food. It is a small family owned restaurant with cabin style decorations. The employees are friendly and are very attentive to the customers. I got the turkey croissant and my husband got the fish and chips. The turkey croissant was pretty good. It was big and had thick slices of turkey. It came with mashed potatoes and gravy which I liked better than the sandwich. The fish and chips were pretty good too. It came with what they call fries, but they're more like potato wedges and I liked those a lot. We also decided to try their cream cheese stuffed pretzel for dessert. Stayed in Garden City a couple nights and ate here twice. We went the first time hoping to get breakfast, but had missed the breakfast window by 30 minutes. We decided to stay anyways and split the turkey croissant with fries. Tasty, and we both really liked the fries. That was the first experience. The next day we made it in time for breakfast. Total letdown. My husband got the breakfast burrito, which was fine until he got a bite of sausage. I got the biscuits and gravy and added an egg and side of sausage. THE SAUSAGE. Yuck. I ate one bite of two circular patties and couldn't stomach more. Then I found a hair. In short, we both wished we'd ordered something different. The best part of the meal was the toast with raspberry jam. Three stars for our first experience. Had we had breakfast first, we probably wouldn't have gone back. read more

Well this place is a rustic gem. Must go if visiting Garden City. Very friendly staff and great food. We were at Bear Lake after the summer season ended but the place still had a handful of visitors. There is a nice little gift shop in the front too. I loved the raspberry jam so we bought a jar, highly doubt it has HFCS. Everything we ate tasted wonderful. Husband has ribs and chicken and the chicken breast was NOT dry. I couldn't resist trying the pulled pork and it was fantastic with a little bit of kick. And they did not go over board on the sauce which was nice. I am not one to usually indulge in dessert but I am glad the hubby ordered the stuffed pretzel I had a few bites and it was great not too rich. The prices are great too our two meals, appetizer, kids pizza, and dessert came to $37!!! read more

For Bear Lake this isn't too bad. On a weekend where there was lines at other places we were able to get right in at the Bear Trapper. There's a wide range of food here from buffalo wings to Philly Steak sandwich. Everything we had was good but about what you'd expect. This was disappointing none to say the least, I had 1 main issue and several side issues The main issue I had was the service, it was subpar at best and at worst was some of the most unwelcome vibes I have gotten in a long while, I'm not dropping names but I think this was just are waiter/waitress, every one else was nice Some other issues was the rolls came out cold same as the breadsticks (btw don't get the breadsticks it's a piece of raw under seasoned bread) the tater-tots were an acquired taste, now I'm gonna admit I am kinda picky but still it was under fried and tasted like they needed to change their oil, the best comparison I have is oven baked tots, but they have already expired and your out of food, and mans gotta eat, finally, the restaurant was really loud, now to be honest this isn't the places fault but still made me a little cranky Otherwise food was decent and some dishes pretty good and the gift shop was super cute Really sad I had to leave this review I feel bad because there is a lot of potential here it's just used poorly I do think in do time though they will figure it out and do well and have an amazing dining experience For now though I recommend zips or los primos for some good family grub Maybe next time... read more

We ate at the trapper last night and it was a bad experience! The food was mediocre at best and service was bad. Ask server three times for silverware and when he brought food still did not have silverware and waited 11 minutes before he finally brought it and of course food was cold and at the same time we Ask for sour cream and butter for baked potato, tarter sauce for fish and a salad we had not gotten and that took 11 minutes to bring to us after out food had been served. Fish was greasy and overdone, vegetables were soagy and watery. Don't waste your money on their food and service as very bad!!! read more

We were visiting the area and decided to eat at the restaurant cause we liked the name. The elk, bison and beef meatloaf was excellent. The portion was large and meat very tasty. My husband and I ended up at this place for dinner after weighing the limited dinner options available in the area, and it was quite an experience. We were staying at an Inn up the road, and our innkeeper informed us the steakhouse and the pizza place next door to it were owned by the same people, and both were good. We opted for the steakhouse, and I was immediately reminded of my tiny hometown in Southern Utah, an almost hick like atmosphere. Very rustic inside, a lot of bear themed decoration and I suppose the bear themed name should have tipped me off to what it held inside. The dining room was pretty empty, there was one table with a group of 10 women and us. We were seated at our bright red vinyl booth, facing a large TV. with some sort of baby animal of the wilderness DVD playing. The only server in the place was tending to the large party, and didn't get to us for a while so the host who sat us took our order, got our drinks and gave us our bread with butter and raspberry jam. We looked over the menu, deciding on a fillet Mignon for myself with a side of mashed potatoes and my husband ordered the pound of crab legs with a side of fries. Munching on our bread, I was really happy with the raspberry preserves, they were so tasty and reminiscent of my grandmothers jam. I was tempted to buy a bottle from the selection up front by the entrance, but decided to not get it. As we waited for our meal, I heard the sound I dread hearing in a restaurant: the microwave. I have a huge thing against microwaves in a kitchen, it just indicates my food is either being reheated and its not fresh, or the cook is lazy. A harsh assumption, but I have a microwave in my house I rarely use, and I prefer freshly prepared food. I know my house isn't serving a lot of people, and maybe it wasn't an item of mine that was getting nuked, but I can't help but cringe when I hear a microwave go off in a kitchen. The large party got their food and ours came shortly after, in a fairly timely manner. There were three pieces of bacon on top of my steak that were black and burned, I wasn't able to eat them unfortunately since I love me some bacon. I was initially worried my medium well steak was going to be overcooked as well, but surprisingly it was cooked very nicely. I was horrified at my mashed potatoes swimming in butter, I tried to remove the pat of butter off the top before it did any more damage to my dish but they ended up being mostly inedible as well. My husband got a generous amount of crab legs, and they seemed to have been steamed the proper way and were delicious. It was hard to get to the crab due to the kitchen sheers we were given to cut into the crab legs instead of the standard cracker. Though the fries were crispy, I joked that they were "ore-ida" fries straight from the bag since they tasted like a freezer to me. Our server finally got to us and got us a refill toward the end of our meal, but the host was the one who brought our food, so I really hope the server shared if not gave that boy his tip from us. All in all it was fine enough, I enjoyed most of my husbands crab legs and he shared my steak with me. We didn't dare venture into the realm of deserts there as it included very bar food-ish sweets like "cream cheese stuffed pretzel", and "volcano cake". We walked away spending about $60 and didn't feel totally ripped off, but if we are ever in the area again we will probably hit up the pizza place next door, or the Mexican food restaurant up the road. read more
