She helped me get away from my housewife hair rut with some well-advised hair products and interesting layers, and the offer to make me look more artsy with some french-word-I-can't-remember blonde and red highlights. I haven't returned for the highlights yet, but I think I'll try them out in the spring. I really liked how she listened to me and figured out what I needed without judging me for being old and frumpy, which is how I usually feel in fancy hair salons. The atmosphere in the salon is trendy, but not oppressively so. They bring you super high-end bio-organic-save-the-rainforest-and-cure-world-hunger-tea and a little biscuit, and the tea cup is actually reachable while your hair is being cut, so that's nice. And the mirrors are only from the chest up, so you don't have to watch your big belly roll out while sitting in the usually awkward hair cutting chair angle. And they have a biiiig bowl of marshmallows in the waiting area, which look light and fluffy but they will sit in your stomach like a brick if you happen to eat 8 of them because they beckon you to eat 'just one more'. I did not know this. Haircut prices are about average for trendy Amsterdam salons, and they sell pretty high-end hair products from Redkin and Shu Uemura. They're expensive but worth it, in my opinion. They don't push the products on you either, which is nice. And you get one free bang trim with every haircut. I originally came here because it was across the street from my husband's work, so it would be easy for me to drop the baby off with him while I got my hair cut over lunchtime, but I think I'll stick with them for awhile.

I have seldom experienced such poor service and client belittling. First of all, the receptionist…read morewas not wearing a facemask. I have booked an appointment 6 weeks in advance (Covid times, so I understand) - I show up and get told that my hairdresser fell out (I didn't book for a specific hairdresser), "we tried to reach you" is all I got. I have not received any phone calls nor emails. After reading out the number that was called (which was the wrong number) I was made to feel as though it was my own fault that I did not pick up/that I filled in the wrong number online. After asking why I didnt receive an email, the only answer I got was that I am not in the system. At no point did I receive an apology, on the contrary, I left the shop feeling like I either wanted to shout or cry. It has been a very long time since a business made me, as a client, so inferior and disrespected. Very disappointing. Upon returning home, I checked my confirmation email - my (correct!) phone number and email were right there.

I found Timothy and Julie, the brother and sister team behind Afro Curls, when I initially moved to The Netherlands in 2010. I googled hairsalons for nearly a week and conducted phone screenings with potential stylists before I took the plunge. Julie was incredibly professional, and scheduled my appointment with Timothy. To bolster my lead in comment about Timothy, Almere is located 2 hours from my city. But like the dedicated believer I am in my stylist, I drive. No matter what damage I've imparted on my hair, Timothy makes it happen. When I move back to America, I wish I was uber-wealthy enough to take him with me to be on my glam squad. Sigh...a girl can dream. Julie is knowledgable, kind, and incredibly professional. In addition to hair, Julie also offers nail services. Can't say enough good things about this business. Services offered are relaxers, hair coloring, cutting, weaving, braiding, natural hair care, keratin straightening, barber services, child hair styling, and nails. Products such as Mixed Chicks, Mizani, Kinky Curly, Global Keratin, Taji Waheed, and Argan Oil are available for home purchase. The salon is accessible by the Almere-Oostvaaders train station located less than 1 km away from the train stop.
