I won't lie, it was a very weird experience. I wanted a spray tan. Sun beds are useless on me because I do not catch the sun usually, I am that pale that I instead reflect the sun. If I do change any colour, it's pretty much from pasty to white and that's it. So I'd have to spend an hour on a sunbed and god knows what that would do. Anyway, the spray tan, we've all seen that episode of Friends with Ross...this was the exact same thing! You stand there facing the machine, it sprays you, you turn (quickly so as to avoid the 'Ross look') and then it sprays you again. Scary stuff. The spray actually contains bronzer as well as fake tan so you notice the difference immediately although the actual tan doesn't kick in for four hours. So you gradually change colour over the course of the day which can very much confuse your work colleagues if you nip out for one during a lunch break. But if you are thinking of going for one, I'd really recommend this place, I was very unsure and they were beyond helpful and the price was great. The tan lasted about a week. Will go again when I find the occasion!

I'm speaking out of turn, I'm sorry. I just wasn't quite prepared for the tangerine sinewy arms, puffed up lips and overuse of liquid liner. That, my friend, was not why I was requesting a sunbed. THAT is not my intention, my goal. Nope, having unexpectedly found that I was visiting Mallorca, I thought my pasty skin might need a little UV exposure so that it didn't go into a state of catatonic shock when I actually walked out under the searing Balearic sun. This state is known as prickly heat to most. Now let's remember, I am not condoning sunbeds. This was last June and I have long since given the blighters up. But occasionally you out there in the Yelping community may wish to bronze under the purple light of a giant canister, and for that, please don't visit The Tanning Shop. The reason I'd popped in here was because I'd been turned away at Bannatyne's, as explained in my Bannatyne's review. Thus, I spotted this on Cross Street and wandered in. To my right was a row of tanning booths. You know, just the booths. The canisters. The ones that you usually walk into AFTER you've taken off your clothes in the PRIVACY of the CHANGING ROOM which surrounds it. But this was... just a row. Of canisters. Overlooking this momentarily I turned to my left, and there was my Jordan who immediately asked if I had an appointment. Apologies, I'm used to the soggy world of Achieve Fitness where you just walk in and bake yourself for a few minutes. Err, okay, I know Cross Street is pretty central, but an appointment for tanning? That's just insane. There were a good few booths, maybe if they just had a waiting area it would solve the appointment-making conundrum. Anyway, I soon decided this wasn't the place for me. Whether it was Jordanalike herself, whether it was my absolute puzzlement over what we do with our clothes (take them off IN the booth? Stand on them?), whether it was the sheer terrible logistics of the place whereby they seem to have overlooked the small size of the shop itself, I don't know. The point is, I'm glad I don't have to deal with this rigmarole any more. Thanks to the likes of that Girls Aloud chick and wotserface Twilight lady and her from Florence and the Machine, pale's becoming increasingly fashionable and we should probably follow suit. Either that or just use Jordanalike as an anti-tanning warning. Should do the trick. (Edit - after reading Sarah Anne's review I've bumped it up a star because obviously the spray-tanning contingent is top notch.)

However every time I go it's packed full of people getting their nails done so it's clearly popular. When I eventually become the kind of person who gets their nails done (I know it's only a matter of time) I'll report back. Eyebrow threading is £7 and it's quick and my eyebrows always look great afterwards. Yes it hurts but I'm not sure that's optional really. You sit in a chair that's just next to the till, so it's not a very discreet or luxurious experience in comparison to other places I've been where you go lie on a bed in a private room, but as it's quick and cheap I can't complain. You can book online through Treatwell which is v convenient, but you can also just walk in off the street a lot of the time.

It has to be reasonably priced, these days you will be hard pushed to find a row of shops that does not include a beauty salon of some kind so there is a lot of competition. Then they have to actually know what they are doing and do it well. You are going to these people to make yourself look and feel better and the last thing you want is to have paid to look like an idiot. This is particularly true when it comes to spray tans. I have had many spray tans and each one has been a different experience and left me with a different result. There are different techniques: the praying spinner- hold your breath for what feels like a day whilst you twirl with your eyes shut and hands clasped together; the more conventional and less suffocating but ultimately more revealing Egyptian pose- stand with paper knickers in different positions whilst the beautician either sprays or rubs you with fake tan. Then there is the fake tan, from well known brands to warehouse products, both the technique and the tan can leave you sun-kissed, tangoed, or tan-less. Sanctuary 12, whilst offering a range of other treatments, excel in their approach to tanning. They have a small room specifically designed for spray tans, that allows privacy and enough air and space for you to breathe and move whilst being sprayed. Once undressed and your paper panties or old, back-of-the-knicker-drawer pants are the only clothing remaining, the beautician will knock on the door and begin spraying. The whole experience lasts less than 5 minutes so can easily be done on a lunch break, and although the posing isn't exactly dignified the girls make sure every area is covered, leaving no streaks or patches. The spraying method means it's less intrusive than the hand applied tans and feels like a cool breeze when being applied to the skin (it seems to get colder on your stomach but lasts about 30 seconds!) The other thing that defines a spray tan is your own skin colour and the beauticians take into account what level of tan would suit your own skin and how dark you want to be, adapting the tan to suit your needs. I'm pale but love being brown so I get a level of tan that can mistake me for having been in the Caribbean for 4 weeks. After you have been sprayed, leave putting on your clothes until your skin feels dry which takes around a minute and that's it, job done. The cost: £18 for full body, £10 for half body. They do give the option of the manual tan using St Tropez if you prefer that method and product, but if you're a newbie then try the spray first as it's cheaper and works just as well. (£30 for St Tropez but includes full exfoliation). This is a great little place that makes you feel comfortable, look great, and at a good price. Tip: always wear clothes that you don't mind getting tan on, as when the tan is developing the residue can rub off, but it has always washed out of the rags I wear when having it done.

And nine times out of ten, I'm not even talking about this place because of its waxing of down-there hair. You see, despite its fear-inducing name, Brazilian Waxing Co does more than just your ladygarden. I've been coming here since it opened a couple of years ago, for various treatments but one in particular. Eyebrow threading. If you haven't heard of it, or you're not sure what it is, you only need to know three things: one, it's quicker than plucking, and more precise than waxing; two, it lasts longer; and three, it really, really bloody hurts! But it is so worth it; when I'm done with my threading, I look in the mirror and the pain instantly fades; all I can think of is how great my eyebrows look. As any girl will tell you, a good eyebrow lifts the face. The threading treatments I have had here have always been top-notch, excellent value at £7 and I would recommend it as the best place for threading in Manchester. The only place that tops it is a salon I visit when I'm in London. So, if you need your eyebrows done, you know where to go, but what of the rest of their treatments? Well, I'm not gonna go into too much detail for the faint hearted amongst you, but the bikini waxing service is efficient and they try and make you as comfortable as possible. There's no need to be embarrassed, these girls have seen thousands of downstairses, and they'll see thousands more. What makes me slightly uncomfortable is the design of the shop and treatment rooms, which are basically enclosed booths. The walls don't reach all the way to the ceiling, and sound carries pretty well, so it's hard to relax completely. The basic bikini wax is £10, Brazilian £20, and they'll take it all off for £25 (in for a penny, in for a pound, as my wise old nan might say). In terms of what else they wax; pretty much whatever you want. Arms, legs, tummies, chins. And yes, boys, they do offer the back, sack and crack, at an eye-watering (you're not wrong there...) £50. They also do lash and brow tinting for both genders (in case your manscara isn't quite cutting it...) So if you've got unwanted hair, anywhere, get down to Brazilian Waxing Co.
