A Very Special Day - Drapery and Lighting from wedding event at Dallas Arboretum. Rosine Hall

    A Very Special Day

Richard was the DJ for my wedding and did all the lighting as well. I can't recommend him enough!…read more I'd say he was one of the easiest vendors to work with throughout the whole planning ordeal, if not THE easiest (ok toss up between him and the Palomar). As for the lighting, he took a rather unappealing ceremony location and made it look like something out of a fairytale. The ballroom for the reception was just how I was picturing it in my head. The DJ'ing was great. He kept the crowd into it and came across as just a genuinely nice guy, not jerky or cheesy. He also had an even better greek music selection than I did for the big fat greek wedding portions, so that was much appreciated!! My only two small complaints were 1) that our first dance song was started before we could get to the dance floor so we missed the start cue we had been practicing, and 2) that he chose an Elvis medley to play instead of individual songs, but I guess it was better in the interest of time...oh well. Small details. I would have no reservations recommending him to anyone for their wedding or special event!

I have worked with Richard and his team before, so it's no wonder I didn't search for my wedding DJ…read moreand entertainer. He's so much more than a DJ. Here's the Top 10 reasons, A Very Special Day was my first choice and why I will always use Richard in the future... 1) HE'S MORE LIKE A HOST/EMCEE. AVSD engages folks and makes your guests laugh - Even the stale Aunt that you didn't want to invite. I have seen ten, too many, DJ's claim to be great and have seen all of them come off as unprofessional, unknowledgeable and...lame. This crew should be categorized as a "HOST." The music is just bonus. 2) YOUR WEDDING WILL NOT BE PERFECT. Sorry to break it to you. Crap happens. But, with Richard, he'll roll with the punches and you'll wonder why he didn't charge you double. Wedding mascot shows up two hours early? Richard has it covered. He reacted calmly and quickly -- And I didn't have a wedding planner so it was just me and him. He handled the change-up like a pro. 3) HE WILL TELL YOU THINGS YOU FORGOT ABOUT. Did you know that your DJ/Emcee/Entertainer/Host will also keep you on point with wedding etiquette? Richard OWNS his events and there were several times I thought what a waste it would be to have a day-of or wedding day coordinator because I had him. If you DO have a wedding day coordinator, you'll probably coast into your honeymoon even more easily. Kudos for you. Don't have that? Call Richard, you'll be fine. :) 4) Richard "plays well" with ALL vendors. In fact, my videographer and photographer kept going to and working with him. He even came up with an idea I'd never seen before to keep my guests from waiting in line -- and having fun -- while food was being served. Priceless. If you have specific questions, I'm happy to have you email me direct at jrbronze@gmail.com and I will personally address specifics on why he's the only choice when it comes to wedding entertainment. Seriously, email me. AVSD is dynamite!!

The Artful Bachelorette - Our charming shirtless server on pencil sharpening duty!

I'm not sure how the pricing…read morestructure works, or if wine and cheese is *normally* included, as these breakdowns weren't provided for us... however, it was a lot of fun either way! The experience included a topless server (male) for our party, an instructor and a nude model (also male). Something else that wasn't specified was if you had a female model if you would also have a female server? So not sure on that. I would guess she would be in a bikini or bra top as no nude photography is allowed and they walk around during the entirety of the event serving drinks and handing out pencils as needed. This would be a fun event to celebrate bachelorette parties (obviously), but you could also utilize their services for any type of gathering. I can so see a ladies night in with my friends doing this, but she also mentioned divorce parties (in which case can we have a group of male models I'll take 5 thank u), birthdays for the artsy friend, baby shower because clearly they've seen someone nude and nobody likes baby shower games (she didn't say that but I couldn't resist).... anyways, I digress. The only thing I wish I'd had more of was explanation. Some of them felt kind of rushed and I had no idea how to shade which was detrimental to my artistry (jk my hands are detrimental to my artistry more than anything else)... Would definitely do this again!

At our event, Bobby the server refilled drinks and took care of us during the drawing portion. The instructor and muse were fabulous at providing instruction and maintaining a sophisticated AND fun environment. It was fun to learn drawing techniques, but my skill was just alright! Each round went pretty quickly, so I wish I could have taken a bit more time to draw.

NickelRama - Bathrooms were much better than expected

My daughter had a blast. She collected enough tickets to win some cool prizes. Some of the games weren't working, but we got to enjoy most of them. It was a fun way to spend an hour or so.

I took my grandson to NickelRama a little over a week ago, while he was visiting from Ohio…read more Having never been, I had no expectations other than to think we were going to an "arcade." I had looked up NickelRama online just to verify that fact, and in so doing I read that all the arcade games were, go figure, a "nickel!" Anyhoo, what I did not realize was that NickelRama are a chain of "play for tickets" arcades, where one may then redeem the tickets for "prizes," akin to that which one might imagine winning at a carnival "Guess Your Age/Weight Booth," where number of prizes range from a stick of chewing gum or pencil topper on the low end to perhaps something electronic on the far upper end, depending on the number of tickets being redeemed. My grandson was fully aware of what we were getting into, as I quickly learned. After we made entry and each received our initial $10.00 purchase of 200 nickels, presented to us loose, in plastic cups, he immediately began searching the arcade for what he determined to be the game that would result in us accumulating the most tickets. This was not his first rodeo and he certainly knew the "name of the game" was quantity over quality, as far as ticket acquisition goes. The idea that we might challenge one another in some friendly video game mano a mano competition was quickly replaced by us challenging an electronically crafted gizmo to give up the most tickets possible, for later turn-in and prize procurement! As such was inevitable, he found THE game and thus, the challenge was on. It took us each about 45 minutes to burn through our 200 nickels. Well, I actually left the particular game and sought some variety of play, after about 160 or so nickels. That was short lived however, as I quickly realized my grandson's assessment was correct and the game to which he remained attached was the one that was most generous in spitting out tickets. Hence, I returned to sit beside him at the adjacent game and fed the remainder of my nickels into the machine. When our nickel cups were empty, I urged my grandson to walk about and seek out other possible games, but he quietly reminded me none were as generous as the one we'd just left. Still, I was seeking variety so, I enticed him with an additional cup of 100 nickels. He retrieved the cups and we began playing a game somewhat similar to THE game, but as he pointed out it just wasn't as lucrative. So, we went back to the machines we first sat at and fed. After a short period, we both were done and ready to feed our tickets into the Ticket Counters for tabulation. The ticket counters, booth count AND slice the tickets in half so they may not be reused/recounted. As our tickets were counted, he was declared the winner, by his count exceeding mine, by about 800 tickets! In total, we had a combined give or take 5300 tickets, with which he could now utilize to "shop" for prizes. With an "All-in" investment of just at $40, including the $5 entry fee for each of us to the NickelRama, he was able to get a tiny rubber eraser, a pair of large foam dice, and a plastic foam ball pop gun. In the end, I considered it money well spent, since the goal of the trip was to spend some quality time out with my grandson. He had fun and I had fun! He was shown that he was valued by my following his lead in our quest. And, he outperformed me in the acquisition of tickets! If you're looking to spend some time with your little ones and you want them to feel good about themselves, a NickelRama can fill that need! If you go, just keep in mind, that the quality is not in the prizes but in the time spent together! Live well. Be well. Cheers!
