Not quite sure where exactly my friends were taking me - I don't think The Place Theatre is in walking distance of the train station, and even if it was I would never have spotted it. It's located in a bungalow off the beaten track ... Once inside it still feels a bit like a community centre, which I think is exactly what it is rather than a repertory theatre. The auditorium seats around 100 at a guess, the stage set seemed straight from an IKEA catalogue (actually, as it turns out one of the organisers transferred the contents of his living room to the theatre for the duration of the play!). Anyhow, not the easiest of settings to make you forget your surroundings and immerse yourself in a story. But this is exactly what happened, the play (Duet for One by Tom Kempinski) was brilliantly delivered and had us all in tears at the end of the first act. I completely forgot I was in a small theatre in Bedford, and the play triggered long and deep conversations for the rest of the evening - this is what great theatre can do! And at £9 a ticket this was really good value, too.

Accordingly, I've spent a fair amount of time at the Royal and Derogate, as my wife is a part of the theater's amateur Actor's Company group. I've attended multiple shows she's starred in, as well as other productions we've learned about through her weekly sessions at the venue. I've even been chased by zombies through the streets of Northampton at 1am. Which is to say, the creativity and opportunity for audience members and performers alice offered by the Royal and Derngate is unmatched by any other local theater I've known. There's two large theaters as part of the complex, hence the name. The Royal is what you think of when you imagine a classic theater. Beautifully intricate plaster work (though I admit I'm no expert as to the quality of such construction) complements an intimate environment. The chairs are comfortable, if slightly narrow for my frame, and I haven't sat in a bad seat yet as far as the view. Then there's the Derngate, the larger of the two and where most of the headline acts are. It's not great on style with an outdated 1990s feel to it, but its size helps the venue bring in the larger acts, which is where it excels, but not as you might think... It's clear in the Royal and Derngate's breadth of available work that it seeks to be a center of excellence for all abilities and levels, not simply for road-show acts. Instead, the money drawn in by big names appears, at least to me, to enable the theater to enable others to pursue their dreams, educate the local youth, or give locals a creative, unique and engaging hobby as performers or audience members. This philosophy and approach is endlessly meritable, and makes it an essential night out in Northampton.

The hall itself is very large and the stage and seating is removable so it can be hired out for private functions such as a wedding reception. It has 2 bars inside and good toilet facilities so you don't normally have to queue for long but it doesn't have a car park so sometimes you have a walk to get there depending on where you find a space. Ticket prices are reasonable.

Really fantastic.I have to say I think the band were worth more than a regional leisure centre - much more! Everyone got up and had a boogie in the Gordon Craig Theatre - the music was so fantastic. Interspersed with 1980s news items like The Archbishop of Canterbury chanting Charles' and Di's wedding vows and Thatcher announcing the invasion of the Falklands (I've been there twice for the day on a cruise ship!). Wonderful. I've also been here for a tour of the 1990s boyband 911 which I also won. The theatre area has a bar and a cafe and there are ashtrays outside the doors so it's easy to have a cigarette. Not very nice looking and in the middle of a concrete jungle but don't let the appearance of the place make you judge the quality of the shows inside.

All you need to do is pick up a brochure to find out what is going. The clubs for children are always something different there is usually a wide range of topics and always lots of fun keeping the children entertained. Whilst the parents can relax in the bar or restaurant. It's easily located near bus and train station. With ample parking on its doorstep. You can book a meal before you see a show so you have a great night out. The only con to this place as it can be a bit pricy for performances and workshops and you need to book early as places are full early especially pantomime performances with school trips.
