I am a fan of these park-like cemeteries. Rolling hills, trees, curving lanes throughout, they…read morebring peace to what could be a challenging and emotional time. I do now know anyone laid to rest at Gate of Heaven, Mrs. K. and I stopped through here to see the final resting places of some famous people. Gate of Heaven and Kensico Cemetery are adjacent to each other but are operated separately. Kensico was founded in 1889 as a non-sectarian burial ground. Gate of Heaven Cemetery, on the other hand, was established later and is owned and operated by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York. Certainly there are more crosses and other religious icons here at Gate of Heaven. We were able to easily find what we wanted to see. New York Yankees coach Billy Martin. Hollywood actor James Cagney. Baseball player Babe Ruth's grave was easy to spot, adorned with ball caps and such. It is a pleasant park-like atmosphere and worth remembering that some people aren't sight-seeing here, so please be respectful. [Review 1148 of 2025 - 569 in New York - 24701 overall]

It's easy to get lost in this place if you're a first time visitor, because it's huge with so many twists and turns. My favorite feature is the pond which is located just south of the main entrance on W Stevens Ave.

John was so understanding ,compassionate and friendly and he prepared me for what lay ahead. Once mom died he swiftly put everything into place with grace, clarity and impeccable care. I didn't feel alone - and he made it easy to choose the best option ( financially and otherwise) for her funeral/burial in record speed....which was of utmost importance in our religion. He made this experience so effortless for us so I could concentrate on what mattered most. I will be forever grateful for all he did for our family.

It was the second month of the pandemic- April of 2020. I had previously made several calls to different funeral homes asking for my father to be picked up from the hospital and buried. No one was offering this service. It was all about cremation at this time, due to the pandemic. I found John Crawford who was a lifesaver during such a terrible time. He was able to bury my father who had died from covid, which was my fathers ultimate dying wish. John came through for me when no one else did, and he didn't ask me for a dime upfront. He told me not to worry about it, and he trusted me and in this day and age its so difficult for anyone to have trust. I was unable to attend the funeral, but he promised me he would say a prayer for my father and sent me pics of the casket as it was being lowered into the gravesite. I'll never forget John. God puts angels in our lives! Thanks John!!! The Rosado Family.
