Gross Bar. Disgusting bathrooms. Horrible staff. Not sure what people would like about this place. Much better establishments in the area.

Bartender was extremely nice and served up our drinks promptly and correct. Prices were very reasonable. We got 4 drinks for $21. The crowd was clicky and early 30's. There was free popcorn, deer hunting video game, 80's music playing over head. Seen a jukebox on the wall. The downfall for us was the size of the bar. It felt like they turned a house trailer into a bar! The tables were so close together and hard to move around. 4 chairs to a table but you were legit shoulder to shoulder sitting down. Inexplicably one of my favorite places to drink outside but least favorite to drink inside. The patio is rad and the outer aesthetic of the bar is right up my alley but heading indoors changes everything (a combination of being too loud and just the general vibe. I though that's not the most descriptive thing, sorry). Ridiculously good drink deals most days of the week (2 for 1 drinks multiple days, $2 wells, etc) plus the location and patio maintain the beechwood as one of my regular spots. read more

I love the Beechwood. It's a perfect little neighborhood bar in the East Village! Always packed with regulars after a work day! They have a fantastic little patio that looks on to downtown Des Moines. I love the prices you can get 2 Bud Bottles and a Double Gin and Soda for 8 bucks! Can't beat that! And they always have the popcorn machine on! FREE CORN! They also have lots of spicy toppings you can add to give it a little kick and to keep you buying those cheap beers! The basement of the Beechwood is more of a Dive bar that occasionally has rock n roll shows or features DJ's pumping out the jams! I have played one show here and it was a blast! Not the greatest sound in the world but, it kinda feels like you are at a house show with a bar! Which always feels GOOD to me! If you are looking for a place to watch a game, or just sit outside and enjoy the weather, the Beechwood is a killer place to do so! A happy hour must! read more

Busy, busy! I went in on an early Friday evening. It was packed! We were there on a chilly evening and the doors were open and every seat in the place was full. We belly up to the bar and get a couple drinks. My girlfriend dives into the free popcorn that is standing near by. Then as we stood talking here comes the Pizza dude! Pizza? Wha? Yes on early Fridays they provide a couple free pizzas for people to enjoy. Way cool move Beechwood! The short time we were there I really enjoy what I experienced. The bartender was attentive and friendly and apparently this stand alone building will be happy to be the bar of the block. I have been in the building before and know there is a downstairs with more room. However I think it was under a different name at that time. They have enough room down there to have small shows or stand up comedians. read more

Ok I usually love this bar. bUT... The bartender with the big beard at the bar was horrible tonight. Every other bartender has been great. Good music cheap drinks good atmosphere. If I gave him a rating it would be one. Other bartenders are 5! Hope they keep up the good service. read more

Dive bar 101. It would be better if it was a Cardinal theme bar, but if you can stomach the Cubs it's ok. Free popcorn is always a plus and it is nice and salty. Nice prices on the drinks and laid back clientele. read more

A simple no nonsense dive bar, people of all ages and drinking styles doing what we do best, having a drink. I was lucky enough to walk in on a Tuesday where it is but one get one so that kept my bill low but my buzz high. I especially like the poker chips. (They have color coordinated poker chips that you get with your first drink then you turn in the poker chips to order your second drink. There was no crowd so my service was prompt and smooth and the bartenders both seemed fun and laid back but I was into my own rounds and conversation so I may need to go back and sit at the bar next time. read more

A couple years ago, the bartender at the bar lost my debit card and in the flurry of trying to get beers poured, refused to look for it. When I demanded he look for it, he told me to leave and tried to start a fight with me. (He even ended up following me to my car when I left in an attempt to fight me.) That night, the manager was incredibly unhelpful regarding the event, only offering to cover my tab ($14). My card was eventually found in the cardboard pile by a guy just helping the bartender -he didn't even work there! I had to pick the card up the next day from an unapologetic staff. Since then, I have had no real problems with the bar (I've been back two or three times for social events), but have had no positive experiences to counter my first terrible experience. Can't really recommend this bar, especially if you like your debit/credit card and don't want to get into a fight with the staff. read more

I enjoyed my time at the Beechwood. It's a comfortable, divey spot full of friendly people enjoying their favorite drink(s). When I stopped by, there was even a bunch of free Little Cesar's pizza. Hell yeah. I think I had a Coors and an IPA of some sort before the night started to fade away in my mind. I did take a peak at the giant patio outside. Seems like an ideal spot for some weekend day drinking during warmer months. I'd definitely return. read more

You know what really makes this place an all around great neighborhood bar? The patrons. I seriously have never met a more accepting and fun group of individuals like the people who frequent the Beechwood lounge. They have a decent selection of canned and bottled craft brews as well as a chip (2 for 1) program that you can save your chip for a later date if you so wish. The bartenders are great at remembering all their customers too which is a plus! If you arent from Des Moines, this would be a good place to go. read more

A nice little neighborhood joint a block off the beaten path in the East Village. A clean, typical bar serving a good selection of libations. They do take plastic. There are sometimes shows in the basement or out on the patio. I'm a sucker for popcorn so I'm always down for some free salty snacks! read more

Difficult to describe this, it's over in the slightly more fun west Locust area, a rather odd non-descript building. But this is a real local's-local but they make out of towner's feel pretty welcome. Good beer selection, a but divey, with some wacky stuff on TV, was soul/funk music playing when I was there...if you don't mind going down-market (i.e. I felt very over-dressed n a suit) then give it a go and talk to a few of the patrons. read more

Great bar. Technically a dive bar, but a lot nicer than most. Big patio. Friendly and attentive staff. When the legislature is in session you will find a lot of politicos and legislators hanging out between votes. read more

A decent, popular East Village bar - nothing fancy, just a traditional Iowa bar. The bar area can be a tight squeeze, as it narrow and popular (at least on the Friday night we went). Beer prices are average and the selection is fairly typical. read more

Nice vibe. Nothing too crazy fancy which is my style. I went later on a Friday night and it was not too packed but not dead. Free popcorn and good beer selection. I'm a fan. Drink service was fast. You do have to hand over your debit card to start a tab which is always a little worrisome but I should carry around more cash (not their fault)!! read more
