Its only competition in the direct vicinity comes from the bottle shop at Key Largo, so it wins that battle rather convincingly! Only problem being that it's located across the busy Bayswater Road, so I've almost been run down a few times crossing that, when I should really just walk to the traffic lights and wait a few seconds. Oh well. They have the usual stock of beers, and some foreign imports, charged at appropriately imported prices, and they do have numerous ciders, which gets a tick in my book! Their wine selection is particularly good though, depsite it's relatively small size. They seem to cram plenty of bottles in! And don't be fooled by the cheapness of the clean skin wines, they're actually surprisingly good! Wow, I sound cheap! But that's the truth, they're not good in glass bottles, put it that way. The staff are friendly and will usually help you out if you're having trouble deciding what you're in need of, and they sometimes hold in-store wine tastings. Yay, free wine! They even have a car park around the side, so if you're driving past, you don't have to try negotiating a parallel park while cars whizz by you at 70kmh!

Quite often cheaper than Dan Murphy and they are good guys, except that they sometimes make their Mum look after the shop. They stock stuff you can't get elsewhere like Petersons Chardonnay and Scarborough White Label. There is a good range of aged wine and a comprehensive beer fridge. It was one of the first places in Sydney to stock Little Creatures Pale Ale and thus I have been going back with an unhealthy regularity. Cynthia and Mark's reviews are spot on and I intend to keep supporting Jim's even if it kills me.

If you're of more refined tastes (and have a healthy bank balance to match), Camperdown Cellars also offers a selection of rare and aged wines - not the sort of thing you'd take to the local Thai restaurant. It also offers a good selection of foreign beers - which pleases me, as I'm able to buy some of my favourite English ales (yes, the ones that are usually served room temperature!), although they are a little more pricey than in the off-licenses of London, but they do have to fly here I suppose. I grabbed a couple of crafty's and a bottle-o-spirits and was on my way. They had an impressive range of spirits, including a number I had never seen before. So the range was definitely up there. The staff were friendly and happy to see us, which is always a good sign. Parking is underneath, garage-style, and this makes it more accessible than a shopping centre Dan's. Went here last night for a Craft beer tasting night (it cost $20) As we entered we got a nice beer glass, there was a cheese spread available which was tasty! They had booklets of what beers were on offer to sample ranging from lagers, wheat beers, pale ales, golden ales to the dark beers and IPA's. Had over 35 beers to sample! Some included 1664 Blanc, Moo Brew, Blue Moon, Matilda Bay Alpha Pale Ale, Franziskaner Dunkel to Cascade Stout and even tried Guinness! On the tables they also had free popcorn, nuts and pretzels to nibble on. Further, they had a guy serenading us with his amazing guitar and vocals skills. There were also waiters on hand to serve hot food such as seared salmon, mini hot dogs with all the trimmings and what looked like curry puffs! Staff were extremely helpful and as we walked out we found out we got to keep our crafty beer glass (good thing we didnt just leave it on the tables!). Great night enjoying some of the craft beers from Australia, NZ to Germany.

Earlier in the year when the weather was good, I helped myself to a few different brews, one Belgian and one local Australian, and found a spot on the grass where Glebe Point Road meets the harbour for my tasting. Another time, I went in there on a quest for a very full-bodied, almost jammy red wine. The owner was able to narrow down my preferences with a few questions and point me toward a great bottle in my price range (below $20). Situated on the corner of Forsyth and Glebe Point Road, and just up the hill from the new popular Timbah, it's definitely worth stepping out of your way and giving the Little Bottle Shop of Glebe a try.

I had no idea but there is this fantastic rival to DM's right down the road from me. I think it's actually cheaper too! I got a Pewsey Vale Riesling for $20. It can be as much as $30 at some places so that is a great difference. It's huge this place and they have all your regular wines in one corner and then displayed in the middle is your rarer ones. Then they have a wall held especially for their best wines. I love this section. They carry all sorts of vodka's here like Bison and Kettle one. What I can't get over is the price! Also, the fact that they don't really advertise and nobody knows they exist just baffles me. They are even hard to spot from the street especially when dark. Oh well, it's like a well kept secret which I am now in the know. Yes!
