I've tried a fair few dodgy home brews in my time. Not a big fan of suspiciously cloudy ales that later turn out to be much stronger than you realise, but I can see the fun in it and I'm sure you could make something decent from the various contraptions and other bits and pieces on offer at Brewers Droop. They've got the tubes, funnels, and all other paraphernalia needed to set yourself up as a home brewer. The staff are friendly and happy to explain what to do and the chemistry behind it all. The shop doesn't, impressively, have that yeasty smell that I've smelt whenever going into a bedroom where a concoction is brewing. If you're not that ambitious (or, like me, don't trust yourself not to end up making several pints of poison) then you can just get some of the beers on offer here. There's a reasonable range of real ales (if you're looking for more head to Threshers at the bottom of Gloucester Road, which has a decent selection) and a few other sorts of drink as well.

You'll never find the Cornubia unless you're either lost or looking for it - Temple Street, these days, is almost a back street, off on the right as you walk from Temple Meads down Victoria Street to the centre. The Cornubia itself is set back from the road, hidden by one of the ubiquitous modern office blocks that populate the area. The pub used to be the hospitality suite of the nearby (and now defunct) Courage Bristol brewery. The building dates from 1783 and has been a pub since the mid 19th century. New landlords took over the pub earlier in the year, hailing from Kent, where their pub previously won CAMRA's Pub of the Year. The pub exterior is a well preserved example of Georgian architecture, in stark contrast to its surroundings. Inside, there is a long bar with a separate room off on the left, with some nice original fittings. The walls are covered with a slowly growing collection of pub clips (or are they beer mats?) of the wide and interesting range of real ales they sell - there are seven pumps - as well as ciders from the barrel. The beers on my visit were beautifully kept, and included Glastonbury's 'Black as yer hat' (4.5%), Slater's 'Why not?' (3.8%) and Forge Brewery's 'Litehouse' (4.3%). They also serve traditional home-made pub food food during the day, in generous portions. Worth looking out for, but beware that, because of the location, opening hours are very restricted at weekends - it's best visited during weekdays.

We were greeted by the most surly, unfriendly barman (more of a bar boy actually) whose first words were 'they can fuck off' To top this off, we were told to 'drop dead' on the way out. To be honest, it's no big loss. They can keep their tacky Union Jack decor and their emo bar staff, I will never frequent this establishment again.

If you know your stuff you can catch some really big pre-fame names (I saw Radiohead for £3.50 many, many years ago, though once turned down the chance to see some new band called 'Oasis' in favour of watching the footie in a pub down the road). Weekends are dominated by tribute nights, which can be fun if you get the right one, while up-and-coming acts vie for your attention during the week, when there are also cheap drinks offers early in the night. The floor is paved with flag stones, convenient if you spill your drink! Probably easier to keep in a decent state with the dancing and moshing that goes on here too. It's on the circuit for small bands trying to get a break. That means the odd act that will be topping the charts in a few years time and not a few bands that definitely won't It's a good space for a band to play, perhaps not quiet enough for singer songwriter type acts. The drinks on offer here aren't too badly priced (and a lot cheaper than the O2 academy, which also has a very dire range on offer, thanks to the corporate sponsorship). Things tend to be a bit calmer here too. Although this might just be because it's not such a big place. A gig here generally gets going towards the end, and their will be the risk of crowddivers falling on you, but I've never been there when things get out of control. If you like live music have a look for a band you know (or a tribute to them) and get a ticket for a good night.

It couldn't be much more different to the other pubs/bars that it's close to. You can tell from the outside exactly what it'll be like inside; a traditional English, old mans pub. It is actually a really refreshing pub to go and hide away from the horribleness of the waterfront on a Friday or Saturday night. I went on Saturday night for the first time in well over a year. I'd been drinking wine with a meal before hand, so deiced to stick to that; £8 a bottle! Boom! Drinks wise you'll find your bog standard draught lagers, ciders and ales and the usual top shelf suspects. Nothing out of the ordinary here. Apart from a few of the punters - eeeek! Don't make eye contact! If they have eyes, that is! With pub going out of business left right and centre, I can't see this one any time soon. It's serves it's purpose well!

It's quite a small pub but for some baffling reason, despite it always seeming busy, I have never struggled to get a seat in here. As with most Bristol pubs they serve good local ciders but the best bit is the food. Pieminister, mash, peas and gravy is a must on a cold winter or autumnal day. And if that day is a Wednesday you get a free drink with said meal! Bargain. This is one of those pubs which makes you feel warm and lovely inside when the nights are cold, dark and long, less so in the summer but still well worth a pre-gig visit.

As well as bottles they also have a handful of beers on draught, which didn't seem to expensive either. At the moment they're not doing food but plan to in the new year, which I think would suit the vibe of this place better, as it is table service only, and the seating makes it feel more like a wine bar. However, it's not far off the vibe a lot of bars in Belgium and Holland go for - it could just be a bit more snug in my opinion. I liked the framed patterns (the name of the bar comes from that of a pattern by William Morris, who has a mural dedicated to him in the old printing works across the road), the colour scheme and the general look of the place, but think some moodier lighting and softer seating would make this place a bit more of a destination, or a place to linger. I'll definitely be back though - my cravings for cherry beer will see to that, and they have my favourite (Kasteel Rouge) on tap!
