And if you don't read German, be aware that there are many items not translated into English here. But if you do go, the Kriminalmuseum has a lot of cool and interesting exhibits on the underside of Vienna. I was fascinated by it and the characters I met here. This is not for the feint of heart. Be prepared to view mummified and skeletal remains of some of the perpetrators as they were often preserved to delve deeper into why some people do bad things. This museum should be really popular around Halloween!

Apparently, Vienna was the murder capital of the world at one time. The displays are not for the faint of heart and it is not a feel-good place by any stretch of the imagination. But I think the displays are intriguing and they tell an interesting story if taken in perspective. If the shock value is going to be a debilitating distraction (and it is for many people), then it is not worth going. But if you can get past that to view it as an historical treatise (past two centuries particularly) on crime and punishment, it is worth a visit. It presents tales of greed, power and intrigue in ways that present the corrupt and morally bankrupt side of humanity; something of which we all should remain aware even if we don't like to dwell on it. Presented here are many cases of murder but also assassination attempts, political lynchings, fraud, counterfeiting, etc. I was particularly interested in the 20th Century displays and, as a WWII buff, found the coverage of the Nazi era to be particularly fascinating. It is interesting that I had the chance to go through this museum and the Red Cross Museum in Geneva within months of each other. They are fascinating contrasts of two sides of the same coin. We just like to the acknowledge one more than the other.
