Worst experience with an insurance company ever. If you ever need to file a claim, you will regret ever choosing belairdirect. I had an accident in November, now in March I have still not seen a Penny from belairdirect. No rental. At least 1hour wait times on the phone. Still paying insurance for a car Not on the road anymore so my account stays active (in hopes of eventually getting money for the car). They finally gave me an offer, not even half of what the car was worth, now have to push back to show my car is worth way more than they say. Now for the injury portion, I got a letter saying they are not responsible, but another insurance company, (that I got insurance with a MONTH AFTER the accident occurred) should be paying. But in reality they will barely have to pay for anything as my benefits from work (which are now exhausted) pay for 95% of my treatment. Ultimately, pay for a service for a rainy day. But when that day comes, Belairdirect will do anything to get out of doing their job. read more

I don't want to give them any star, I just got scammed by them. I cancelled my auto and home insurance policy last month since I found better price from other company. The home insurance was ridiculously high, over $3,000 a year; they said that was their best combined offer, we had to use them because we were using their auto insurance and we were too busy on moving, after we settled down, we looked around for different quotes and decided to cancel, they charged us about $350.00 each cancellation, which is more than $700.00, we never had to pay cancellation fee with previous companies. They warned us they will put to collection agency if we don't pay for it. We end up no choice to pay them the painful price. Lesson learned and we are still kicking ourselves, we will never recommend this company to anyone. read more

I posted a review of my experience with this company dated Feb 26, 2019. I believe you can see it on this same page. I am posting today to tell you that my experience continues and has grown much worse. Originally I wrote them on Feb. 7, 2019 complaining about my treatment by a terrible agent who sold me this policy. They never replied so I wrote them again (the Privacy Office) on Feb 27 and they did reply that they never received my letter of Feb 7 and they would get back to me as soon as possible. I sent them a copy of my original complaint and all the pertinent info. That was 11 days ago and I still have not heard from them. I do not believe anything they now tell me. I wrote them again today requesting a reply and also requesting cancellation of my policy providing they waive their exorbitant and outrageous cancellation fee. I believe they are intentionally delaying their reply because they advertise a "satisfaction guaranteed" policy. But I would not believe that. I believe they are delaying so they can claim I can cancel but only if I pay them a huge cancellation fee. Be warned. Never do business with these liars. Liars and crooks. Tell your friends to avoid them. They are thoroughly disreputable. I can only dread what will happen if I ever make a claim. read more

Beware of predatory business practices. I recently received an e-mail indicating that they expected over $100 in ADDITIONAL fees on my $27 bill because my credit card number changed and they were still billing the old one. I'm going to go out on a limb and cast my doubts that it costs you 100 bucks to send me an email and ask me to update my credit card info. Any respectable business would simply ask you to update your credit card info and be done with it. Absolutely disgusting. Their customer service tried to tell me that the card was NSF. That's rich. You know, these days with the internet and all it's pretty easy to pull up a couple months of account statements. It only takes a second to see it was never within 10 trips to Vegas of its limit (any fewer than that and I get uneasy.) So then they demand that *I* prove to *THEM* that the problem was with the card number rather than my balance. Now this would be simple enough if I could just send them a copy of my account statement. Obviously by now we know that "simple" is not the goal (the goal is to steal a bunch of your money.) No, apparently the only way to prove I have always had money (?) is for me to call my credit card company and ask them to send a letter to Belair Direct stating that my old credit card number was shut down. What a crock of bull. Imagine you are at the grocery store to buy a bag of apples (the cost of which is slightly more than what I pay for insurance monthly.) You go to pay and accidentally tap an old card you forgot to take out of your wallet. What would you expect to happen? Would you expect two bruisers in suits to come out and drag you to a dirty back room and take a pair of knuckledusters to your jaw? If you do, Belair Direct is the insurance company for you! If you don't expect minor and completely harmless mixups on your part to turn into the Gimp scene from Pulp Fiction, I would strongly advise you consider other options. This whole run around aside, what's truly egregious and revolting is that this policy exists specifically to target and exploit people going through hard times, also known as "the exact people their business exists to protect." Being told "Oh I'm sorry. We didn't mean to charge YOU, mister person who has money and can afford it! THOSE fees are meant to prey upon the weak and helpless" doesn't exactly make me feel good about doing business with them; especially when said business consists of 99.99% giving them money for nothing and 0.01% depending on them when something goes catastrophically wrong. I, and literally every person I can convince for the rest of my life, will be cancelling our accounts (a feat I hear they also make nigh-impossible.) I hope the big bonus they get from all the outrageous cancellation fees is worth it. Great customer service, though. I am absolutely disgusted by belairdirect. Upon renewing his license, my partner became aware that there was a problem with his insurance. After calling bel air direct the customer service rep proceeded to tell him that they had cancelled his coverage in NOVEMBER over one missed payment that same month. We haven't received any mail, email or phone calls informing us that an automated payment didn't go through or that the coverage would be cancelled. As horrendous as this is THAT ISN'T THE WORST OF IT. After making the missed payment, we were told he would have to wait for a new application to come in the mail in up to 3 weeks?! And that it would take another 25 days to be approved. I have never heard of insurance approval taking more than 24 hours, especially when he has a previous account. Customer service was absolutely unforgiving and offered no explanation or apology for the lack of notice given. The fact that we found out this way and not after being in an accident is a *blessing* but it makes me sick to think we were so vulnerable for several months.. We said adios to bel air direct today and went with another company (Sonnet), who approved him immediately with better coverage at near the same price. And I'm sure they won't put him in danger by cancelling coverage unexpectedly and expecting him to wait another month!! Please protect yourselves and stay away from this company! read more

My experience with this insurance company was the worse at my life, i used to have belair for around 3 years, but when I bought another car, they said that will make one price, that was already expensive and I accepted because I was thinking that all the insurance were included (2 cars + home), I really needed an insurance and I was desperate, then, when arrived the docs, I got surprised for the high price, then I found other insurance company that covers even more with less than half price that belair made to me, and I called to belair to know how much I have to pay if I cancel the contract, they said, will be around $200, so I accepted the deal with the other insurance company, and when I called back to belair to cancel, again other surprise, they said that to cancel is $315,00, I was arguing with the representative, of course I was nervous, due this new surprise, and he said that I was not being polite to him, several times. He said that the previos representative told me was around 200 dolars because she didn't know and he cannot do anything about this, that i have to pay if I want to cancel, otherwise I can continue. When you are new client with belair they treat you good as normal people, then If you need to save money and cancel them, they cheat you and treat you like a dog, don't trust in belair, I really don't recommend belair even to my enemies! read more

They frequently said they would call me back within two or three days and never once did. They didn't even look at the police report until three months into the process. I signed up for residential insurance with Belairdirect, because the building where I live requires tenants to be insured. Everything went smoothly. I even gave the CSR a shoutout on Twitter for his congeniality and excellent customer service. The CSR who handled my latest interaction with the company also handled the situation well, albeit, he appeared to be frazzled. Today I received notice of renewal. The annual premium had increased a whopping 53%! Outraged, I called to find out details for such a huge increase. The CSR informed me that it was because of my increase in contents. I have had no increase in contents. He rummaged around for another reason: my area - increased claims in my area. He advised that all these additional claims in my area were not from water damage but other claims. I live in an area that could be described as Condominium Row. The buildings are very secure with entry codes and security guards, eliminating theft risk. During the year-long duration of CoVid a large number of the apartments in the area have been empty of people and contents. The CSR offered to remove the content increase, reducing the new premium to a 45% annual increase! He advised that Belairdirect would not be able to provide any proof of these apparent additional claims in my area. I believe that such a huge premium increase is an outright money grab, or as struggling working people would call it, a greed-grab, particularly as I have no additional contents, live in a very secure, low-theft area in an old sturdily built highrise building not affected by wind or hail storms, and not at risk for window blowouts experienced in some new condominium buildings, and have submitted no insurance claims. Far more likely such a huge increase has to do with a parent company that has become huge, not from organic growth but through mergers and acquisitions, a Goliath creaming its Davids; loyalty to its shareholders at the expense of its revenue generating client stakeholders; inability to assess its insured areas accurately; insufficient innovative expertise to develop profitable business models, other than to increase premiums and deny claims, and just because it can. I understand the risks of insurance companies and the balancing act between premiums and claims. I likely would have paid a reasonable increase without protest, even one for non-existent additional contents. I would not have phoned and found about the content excuse. But a 53% increase reduced to a 45% increase is outrageous. My premiums are at the low end. I hate to imagine the outrage of exploited companies and individuals at the higher end who are hit with such enormous increases. read more

Would like to rate a zero. I was a customer for 4 months, called to make a claim and was informed that my insurance was cancelled. Upon further investigation I was able to find out that they sent a registered letter, I had never received such a letter. I contacted Belair Direct to see if they could tell me who signed for the letter but they would not disclose the information and just stated that since they did not receive the registered letter as being returned to sender that it was received by the correct party. Be warned they will cancel you at anytime with no communication and you will may be left without a vehicle and zero compensation. read more

I don't often write reviews, but I have to say even the process to obtain a quote through this company was a nightmare. I understand that people's hands are tied by certain processes, but instead of Belair offering any solution or reassurance, I was told it "might be best to just look elsewhere". Cool. 4 family members have Belair Direct, they all got set up right away on the phone and they love it, but I somehow drew the short straw and was placed into a shitty process that resulted in me having forms mailed to me which were to be filled out by hand, mailed back and then sit in a pile for a "minimum" of 17 business days. On day 17 my application was processed and apparently mailed back to me because I forgot to fill out a specific section i guess. When I asked what the process is for this kind of delay, I was told it would be placed back in the queue for a minimum of 17 days before they would reprocess. Now--I don't know who else here thinks it acceptable to wait 2 months (because 17 business days is almost a month) for car insurance, but I certainly can't--I guess the solution is to "just look elsewhere". I truly hope no one else has this issue with Belair because it has been the largest pain since the very beginning. read more

I thought they were a good insurance company when I first signed up (classic new customer syndrome), but when my premium was up for renewal, it went up by $130 for my monthly payment! I try to talk to customer service and even a higher-up employee, but they kept telling me the same thing: They don't even calculate anything, they just sell us info from another company and can't even tell me numbers because "they don't deal with that". It's absolutely pathetic that they cannot solve anything related to the service they provide. The lack of communication they provide their clients with is extremely disappointing and unacceptable. Our vehicle was stolen on April 8 2022. We heard from the insurance agent 3 times between April 8 2022-April 11 2022. After many emails, phone calls and voicemails we finally heard back from the agent on May 2 2022 almost four weeks after we started our claim. The lady submitted us with a disgusting offer that we did not accept. When we asked her where they had gotten their number from she provided us with three dealerships from the Toronto area. We did our homework and reached out to those dealers. To our surprise these dealers did not have our vehicle - make and model on their lot and haven't had them in months. When my husband spoke to the managers at these three dealerships they all laughed and said that the price that Belair direct had offered us was way too low. Belair is a fraudulent company who have absolutely no respect for their clients. It's sickening to think that they actually use these tactics with their customers and that some people do not do their homework and follow up. Being with Belairdirect has caused us nothing but stress. Please do yourself a favor and go with a different company who is not going to try and steal money from their customers! read more

I've had home and auto insurance with Belair in BC since they took over the policies from CDI a few years ago. I haven't had any claims with them. Biggest issue is that they increase the price a lot every year for both home and auto. I call in, get the usual BS about worldwide disasters costing the insurance industry and local claims in my area increasing, then get down to seeing what coverage I can remove from my policy to get the amount of the increase down. But I reached the end with Belair on auto insurance on the most recent renewal - they wanted 23% more. I'm the only driver, and I've never had an auto insurance claim in my life. Even counting the loss of multi-policy discount, ICBC was significantly cheaper. Belair also want 23% more on my home insurance this year, after 18% last year. read more

On another note, Belair Direct and Inact Insurance are owned by the same company, Intact Financial Corp. Intact was able to beat Belair Direct's price by $420 for my wifes car.. for exactly the same coverage. I am what Bel Air considers to be a 7 star driver, ie no accidents, no demerits, no tickets etc etc. I am a senior and so I use my car a few times a week to get groceries, to visit etc. so my mileage is very low. Every year my car insurance goes up and every year when I call them their story is the same "we have had increased claims". This year my car insurance went up $414 (and this is with having my tenants insurance with them as well). Also the SEF 39 used to be included in the premium. This year it cost another $45. i called them and their story is still the same. There seems to be no consideration for loyalty or a history of no claims. read more

Mar 26 2018 Nanaimo BC Was with CDI before Bel Air Direct bought them. Called Bel Air regarding windshield crack from rock and was told to proceed with claim. Auto glass company phoned saying Bel Air had cancelled my policy. Once that was straightend out, Bel Air said I had windshield coverage but was not covered for flying objects because I had not paid for that rider on my policy. I had called and asked Bel Air for a hard copy of my policy 3 times, and was never sent one. Didn't even bother fighting with them, toxic, nothing but trouble dealing with them read more

My fiancé was involved in a not at fault accident 7 weeks ago and this company, Belair Direct, have done nothing but drag their feet and lie regarding this claim from day one. Within a couple hours of the accident, without them even looking at the car they accessed it a 50-50 accident, despite my fiancé being stopped, IN FRONT OF A NORTH YORK POLICE OFFICER, and not even looking at the vehicle. The whole way through this situation Belair have BS-ed, stall, ignore phone calls, and essentially be a terrible company. Last Friday, after 6 weeks, they FINALLY called and started the process of figuring out how to resolve this for my fiancé. She is now not at fault because they looked at the police report, it took a week plus to get a rental out of them. Last Friday they asked, this late in the game, for the sales invoice for the damaged car saying they would have a settlement offer within 48 hours.... You guessed it, they are nowhere to be found. AND, they want my fiance to sign off on the damaged vehicle BEFORE they give her the offer to settle. WTF??? NO, you submit the offer first, she accepts or declines, then it moves forward accordingly. Why would she sign off on a deal with Belair and give up her leverage on the settlement? If it's a good settlement, yes, she signs off on it. If not, you talk it over until it is settled. Seriously Belair, is this the norm for you folks and how you treat good people? My fiance is also still waiting for income replacement..., AFTER ALMOST & WEEKS!!! WTH? Worst insurance company out there. Avoid at all costs folks. They may have been a good company at one time but from our experience in this matter I would suggest avoiding them like the plague. Belair, do better for your clients who pay you their hard earned money. I had talked to them 4 different times and each time talking to them i kept getting different answers, at first when i got the quote i was told i didn't need an OAF1 so the day i get approved for my car i call to get the insurance and told that i needed a OAF1 and to send it to 700 University Ave #1100, Toronto, ON M5G 0A2 which turned out to be the complete wrong address, i was then told it would only take 7-10 business days. so after realizing i got the wrong address i had to resend it out to the right address and then was told it was actually going to take 17 business days. i have friends and family who are with belair but i am the only one that has been told to do this process read more

Horrible. I'm a driver with no prior accidents, no parking tickets, I put snow tires on my vehicle every year, and I also participated in their Automerit tracking program. After a year with Belair, I was forced to move. My new apartment is 4km away from my previous apartment. My car insurance rates shot up over $700/yr. There was no way to reduce the rate. I shopped around for a new insurance provider and spoke to a Belair rep about what was involved in cancelling. At no point was 'cancellation administrative fee' mentioned. I found a better rate with TD Insurance and called Belair to cancel. You can imagine my surprise when I was charged over $250 in cancellation fees. It seems odd that they can change rates as they see fit, essentially changing the terms of a contract, but when I'm unhappy with this and need to find a better rate, I'm penalized yet again. I guess I would have had to stay with Belair for another year to cancel with no penalty? They also charge an interest rate when you pay monthly. Not all insurance companies do this. Not only they condemned me to being partially at fault and destroyed my clean driving records, but after 10 years of being their royal costumer, they totally disregarded their "no premium change after first at fault accident" and increased my premium by 2.5 times. read more

I can't believe I am writing a 4 star review of a car insurance company. I was in a no-fault accident in the winter of 2014 and was unsure about how to proceed. They were also apologetic to my situation ( I hit a deer). The customer service staff were excellent and walked me through everything. The auto shop they referred me to fixed everything up perfectly. My rates did not increase, and when I had to cancel my insurance term earlier than a year, they refunded me money. They also said to consider them again if I were to lease or a buy another car. About three years back, my sister and I both had our own at fault accidents. Both were because of bad weather. Neither accidents were extensive, minor damages to the other cars. We had one car fixed through insurance and the other since it was old, we decided to scrap it. Belair Direct raised my premiums and I paid, since it was justified. No issue there. Then all through the remainder of the year, last year and this year, there were no issues. I get a call today saying as of next year, they will not renew my insurance as both my sister and I have accidents on our names. Three years later just as my premiums were finally coming down. I starting with Belair in 2005 as i was shopping for a better rate than my current insurance provider. The rates were one of the best at that time. In 2006 the rates went down as promised and I was pleased. I'm a 9 star driver with a perfect driving record so when i turned 50 in 2007 i expected another rate drop, but it went up. I called enquiring about the increase and was told it was a government related issue. Each year it went up around 5% so in 2011 i shopped around again. I used belair for both home and auto since 2005. My rates jumped around 25% over that period of time, even though i made no claims and my driving record remain unblemished. They also cancelled my 0 deductible which I've had for 5 years! After making several enquires online i found Grey Power to have the best rates, over $400 less on my auto and home combined. When i called to talk to an agent and finalized everything, my coverage was not only better than Belair, the rates were actually slightly less then the online quote. read more
