But the venue is very cool, with lots of community type tables. It seems very odd that such a popular, quality restaurant is closing, but there are lots of rumors around this, mostly about the landlord jacking up the rent to a ridiculous amount, and wanting to sell the building. But there has also been press in the past about the owner closing another restaurant possibly in order to avoid unionization of the employees. Who knows what's really going on. But what are they going to do with the big copper pizza oven and all the other installations?

When my friend and I walked in, we came into a fairly spacious dimly lit space with loads of people inside. We were immediately informed that there would be over 1.5hr wait for a walk-in table. We were given the option to wait for bar seating as it would probably be quicker - and surely, it was. We did have to wait quite a bit, but it was a tolerable amount of time and definitely less than what it would have taken for an actual table. My friend and I decided to share 2 pizza pies as we wanted to get a taste of two different flavors, so we eventually settled on Korean BBQ & Perfect Pickle Pie. KOREAN BBQ As it was created by a Korean chef, it definitely had true authentic Korean flavors. As a Korean myself, I was very familiar with this soy vinaigrette and have tried this on many salad before - so, it was hitting home for me. Also, you can't go wrong with the bulgogi/beef short ribs known to all those who had Korean BBQ before. The combination of the sauces that they use for this pizza is definitely very rich, full of umami. I personally enjoyed it. PERFECT PICKLE PIE This pie was a totally different flavor to the Korean BBQ. It's less rich and maybe can be overpowered or considered more bland compared to other pizza flavors. But when tried together with the BBQ, it balances out the richness of the BBQ with the more subtle/less umami flavors. This pie gives more of a tangy/sour taste that pickles provide and more of a crunch due to the chips that are added on top. The dill is present, but not overpowering. It's a nice low-key kind of taste that people who like pickles will enjoy. Overall, the flavors were very rich in every pizza pie that we had that our mouths were bursting with flavor. It was definitely the most unique pizza toppings that I've had and can see why it's so highly regarded. I can tell that they really are meticulous with their every process and that their pizza guy by the wood fire oven is expertise in what he does. My friend and I walked out quite satisfied and I was honestly more full than I expected.

Our dinner on Saturday was superb -- we opted for wine pairings with each course and they were spot on. I don't think you can go wrong with any of selections on the menu, but our highlights were the celery root soup, the toasted rye & buttermilk crepe and the roasted duck breast & confit. As good as our dinner was, the service was every bit as good -- the staff at Alma was a highlight of our dinner and of our stay.

There wasn't anything I didn't like except dessert was not included in our meal so for extra $ we did split one and was delicious They did send me home with some mini coconut macaroons which was a nice touch Ambiance - was lovely sitting at the counter, restaurant was full but not crazy loud for a Saturday night! She was pleasant and friendly over the phone when I made our room reservation. I will say most of the B & B's I've enjoyed, was partially because we had a chance to get to know the owners a bit and see how passionate they were about making a great B & B experience for everyone who stayed with them. So, maybe I've just been spoiled a bit by the extent of the services and amenities others offer, but that's my comparison. What this place does have going for it, is it's location. However depending on where your room is, you'll hear the traffic noise as this is located on a busy street. Also, the fact that there isn't really much else around lodging accommodations limits your choices for this area. There is private parking for guests. The room was clean and comfortable. It was lacking the extra little touches that many travelers have come to appreciate from bed & breakfast operators-shampoo, blower dryer, complementary water or soda, glassware or plasticware instead of dixie cups in the room. Self service coffee, tea and microwave popcorn was available in the dining area. For the price of the rooms, the little extra touches might have helped.

But hey, our hosts were relaxed and friendly, and the folks we sat down with to breakfast had fun stories to tell. The rooms are idiosyncratic but charming. The bathrooms: just idiosyncratic, but they worked. Breakfasts on the weekends were more elaborate and tasty, and on weekdays simpler but adequate. I get the feeling this may vary with the number of guests. The Birdhouse is on a "busy" intersection which is no big deal because Excelsior is a pretty quiet little town; and a charming one. You are a walk away from good shops and restaurants. You are a very short walk from Lake Minnetonka and its activities. The Porch and grounds are delightful. If you get the right weather for it, lazing outside could be a delicious experience, with an elevated view of the neighborhood. Of course, getting bearable weather (not too many mosquitoes, not too much heat and humidity, not 5 degrees below zero, can take scheduling and luck. In the winter, I imagine the large parlor would be very inviting. So a point off for the various weird bathrooms, which were all functional but awkward, but all in all, I will be staying there again, the next time I visit relatives.

We were in a side room with a door that closed, and it had a window with a nice view. They provided a shortened menu, with mimosas and coffee, mains, and dessert. There was a burger and one other item on the menu besides the traditional breakfast and french toast options. I got the traditional breakfast option of 2 eggs, hash, sausage and toast, but was also tempted by the french toast. The food was good, but not very plentiful. If I had ordered the french toast, I would definitely have been hungry. As it was, I could have eaten more even of the traditional breakfast. We were scheduled for 2 hours, but it took much longer. I had to leave before desert was even served. We were not the only people in the restaurant, but I think the portions could have been bigger, and the food could have come out faster. I would go back again not in a large group and try some other things!

Stepping into the building is like stepping back in time in the best way possible: dark wood, leaded glass windows, pretty chandeliers that catch the light, and other touches are instantly calming. We received wonderful service from Lilliana, whose recommendations never steered us wrong. She was prompt, helpful, and truly a delight. The food was also wonderful and featured classic dishes, including Minnesota favorites. We started with the bread service, which is a must-have. The bread slices are grilled to perfection, and the compound butter was on point. I started with the wild rice soup, which was very tasty indeed and really showcased the taste and texture of this local ingredient. For my main, I had the Impossible Burger. This was easily one of the best presentations of Impossible that I have enjoyed: savory mushrooms, crispy onions, melty cheese, and tangy whole grain mustard topped two juicy patties. Add in a pile of light and delicious fries? Goes perfectly with a Nah Hellen (which, incidentally, I was stoked to see--zero-proofers, Nicollet Island has you covered!). For dessert, I had the cheesecake. I chose wisely. This creamy, chocolatey slice of heaven is the perfect blend of tastes and textures: a bit of crunch from the Oreo crust, sweet from the caramel, a hint of tanginess from the cream cheese, and just the right amount of bitterness from the chocolate--my friends, it's a winner. If you're dining with someone else, be sure to ask for an extra fork (to defend your plate, not to share!).
