Not where you go for fancy, however what you'll find here is clean and comfortable. No frills, just a nice place to use as the bouncing off place for all the great spots nearby! As far as location, Bella Vista is about 6 blocks from the store in town, and the restaurants that were still open this late in the season (German restaurant and an American fare restaurant); Eagle Harbor and Delaware are nearby with the many great little spots. We had cottage 6, which appeared to be recently updated; paint looked fresh, new flooring. Cottage kitchen had a fridge and freezer, toaster, coffee maker, sink, microwave. Room had a bed, small table and two chairs, and a wee loveseat. Only problem we had: we arrived for check-in an hour after check-in begins--begins at 3pm, we arrived at 4pm--when we entered our room we could tell it hadn't been cleaned. The girl at the desk asked for an hour to clean the cottage; it was hard to drive for 8 hours and then not be able to stretch out and relax right away. That, paired with the tiny shower in our cottage, is what made this a 4 star review instead of a 5 star. read more

The Bella Vista has been my go-to lodging for several trips before catching the ferry to Isle Royale. The rooms have always been in good condition, the staff is predictably kind, welcoming, and helpful, and the price is more than fair. On my last trip I left my wallet in the room - must have missed it on my walk-through? We boarded the ferry the next morning and when we returned 4 days later, I had a voicemail waiting to let me know they'd found my wallet, and several solutions were offered for returning it to me. Because we had a time constraint, we were well on the road when I got the message and I asked them to mail it to me. My wallet arrived, with a kind note, in the mail three days later. We've been coming up to Copper Harbor for our annual vacation for 7 years now, and always stay at the Bella Vista. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the view is great. This year we took one of the harbor cruises to the lighthouse. It was a great little trip and the price is more than reasonable for the ride and the tour. The Bella also has kayaks you can borrow for a cruise around the harbor, and out to Porter's Island, if you're inclined. read more

This place was no castle, but we enjoyed our stay there. Our room was nice and clean and pretty roomy. There was a table right inside the door that we moved over by the slider so that we could sit and play cards and look out the window at the view at the same time. We had the end unit and there was a little patio with chairs that we could sit on. We were also able to make use of some chairs that were closer to the water. Owners were very friendly. There was also a communal fire pit and we sat outside and enjoyed a fire and were able to converse with others that were staying there. The only reason that I gave this a four instead of a five is because there was no microwave in the room. Not being able to get seating (or even take out) at any of the local restaurants (Covid was in play) we were forced to purchase microwavable foods at the local general store and cook them back at the motel. There was a communal microwave on the porch outside the office that we were able to use to cook our dinner, and while that made for some "memories", it was rather inconvenient, especially since it was raining and we had to walk back and forth to our room. We would totally stay at this place again if we are ever in the area. read more

We stayed here day 6 of our motorcycle Lake Superior tour. Had we an inkling of how wonderful, peaceful, and beautiful our locale would be, we'd have booked the rooms for an additional night. Have stayed at 2 different rooms and one of the cabins here, and it's a really nice place. Very clean! We were impressed with the rooms and the housekeeping seemed to take their time in all the rooms as we could see them as they were going around in the morning. Would recommend! In the top floor if they had the bed flipped to the opposite wall you could watch the sunrise from the room ;) read more

Great location, beautiful views -- overlooking the harbor. Nice and quiet. A five-minute walk from the main drag. Tiny, tiny rooms (no place to put luggage), no coffee machine, but the microwave and a small fridge are in the room. A nice deck withe chairs -- everybody loves that. Rooms and bathrooms are worn and need a lot of updating. The smallest toilet seat I have encounter, anywhere (wonder how everyone else fits there). Plenty of water pressure and volume in the shower -- seems wasteful. A great place to stay for a couple nights! read more

This place is no frills but what it lacks in amenities it easily makes up for in appeal and location. Situated on the edge of the water of an inlet to Lake Superior. The front lawn has a shared fire pit that really came in handy on a cool September evening. The back lawn had a shared deck that ran the length of the hotel, a well manicured lawn with lounge chairs, geese and a great breeze. At times we could hear the air horn for a ship taking passengers to Isle Royale. The hotel also featured some stand alone cabins that looked quite charming. What a great location. We stayed in room 16 with 2 double beds. The room had a patio slider that opened onto the back garden area. There are patio chairs to sit in or you can walk to the dock that attaches to the property. Our room wasn't overly large but it was clean. I also appreciated the larger size fridge in the room. The motel brews a big pot of coffee on the front porch every morning with plenty of cream and sugar. There is also a microwave for common use and ice available. From there it is just a short stroll to James Fish Market for a fresh baked cinnamon roll, muffin or scone. Heaven on earth. read more

I agree with previous reviewers that the rooms are very basic and there aren't a lot of perks, but the view kicks this up to a 4-star place for me. You can stay in a multi-story hotel, in a cottage or in the lakeside motel. We stayed in the motel because it had a shared deck that looked right out on Copper Harbor. You can put your feet up, have a drink and watch the ferry come in from Isle Royale from your back deck. They don't offer a continental breakfast, just weak coffee on the porch of the office in the morning. However, the motel is within easy walking distance of a couple of restaurants that serve breakfast. I found the staff to be nice and accommodating. The checkout time is a painfully early 10 a.m., but after some negotiations upon checkin, they compromised and allowed us to stay until 11 a.m. The rooms showed some wear and tear but were clean, and I had the best Wifi access here out of all the places we visited in the UP! read more

Ok, Bella Vista is one of the more upscale hotels in the Copper Harbor area and by that I mean they have a lobby and someone who will check you in. In this area, that is a luxury, if you dont believe me look at a map dumb-ass. Copper Harbor is at the very tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula and on the the places where a ferry goes to Isle Royale National Park. I love Isle Royale Park and I have spent an over-night in Bella Vista. It is a tourist hotel, meaning it is open mainly for the people going on the ferry for Isle Royale, so it is arranged as such. Limited amenities and a spartan decor. Close to the ferry launch site so a good place to spend the over-night. read more

It's a very nice place to stay. It's no frills but it has an old school feel that you don't come across often. The scenery is what makes it worth it though. Only down side is the owners teenage daughter needs to learn how to use prepaid Visa cards, either that or don't allow her to check in guests! I have, as the 2-star description declares, "experienced better," but for where it is and compared to its competition, this hotel is a-ok. Copper Harbor is the gateway to Isle Royale, and Bella Vista is RIGHT THERE, right on Lake Superior. You can see the dock from some of the rooms making it a perfect place to catch the early morning ferry over to the island. On the way over to the island, we heard reviews of some of the other hotel/motels in Copper Harbor and felt fortunate to have picked Bella Vista. Now, Bella Vista is no gem. It's really just your basic hotel room and nothing more. Well, unless you consider the slight musty odor to be something more. : ) Our room was on the second floor. Second floor rooms have a balcony out the front the everyone shares. It has adirondack chairs to sit in and enjoy the view of Lake Superior, or in our case, the parking lot. We found it a great place to dry out our tent from the night before's camping. If you are just looking for a place to crash before your ferry ride to Isle Royale, this place is a-ok. read more

Owner needs a lesson in good business practices. We checked into this motel in October 2013, the power went out 30 minutes later, we have yet to be refunded and I doubt if we ever will. They obviously don't need repeat business. read more

Beautiful location right on the water in Copper Harbor, walk-in distance to town. We stayed in room 7 and 3. Both were recently renovated and had nice large updated bathrooms. Extremely comfortable beds with lots of pillows. They do a wonderful job cleaning and maintaining the facility. One room had a mini fridge and microwave, the other didn't, but I believe there is one available at the office. We enjoyed using the canoe on site and sitting on the deck overlooking the water. Stayed here July 22nd. The room was clean and ready for us, there is no air conditioning but being right next to the lake, there was always a good breeze coming through the windows that it wasn't a missed commodity. The price was very reasonable and the view was fantastic. We were right by the dock, definitely a contender for a go-to destination. Room includes a mini-fridge to keep water bottles and other beverages cool. Also the motel office was perfect for recommendations and advice on what to do first! read more

Stayed in Sept. '08 in a motel room almost exactly across from the bench pictured on the page showing bench in garden with a white ferry boat going thru the water (click on 'The Motel' link on their homepage) The motel rooms are arranged in that rectanglular building facing the view you see. On their home page, you can see the front door of the unit at the furthest N. or east end., just showing to the left of the Motel's sign shown. I had a sliding glass door to a common walkway running across all the units. There's no dividers on the walk. No smoking in ANY of the rooms. Result!? Everyone sits on that walk...smoking! These rooms aren't big so each of the sliding doors that look at that view y'cvan see on the website? They're around 10 feet from each other! If the guy two doors down is sitting out smoking, and talking all the smoke blows right into your room.. and y'can hear them talking. This place is probably one of the closest in town to the Isle Royale ferry, so that part's convenient....if that's why you're there. And that view is nice. Faces pretty much north so there's no REALLY great 'sunset view'. The land seen is a sorta 'barrier' islnad from the big lake. But, I'd NEVER stay here again. The motel units haven't been soundproofed. The T&G knotty paneling, even on the ceilings, is authentic, looks 50 years old...and probably is from when they built the place...WITHOUT using modern motel soundproofing between the walls! Obviously I was in bed with the TV on NORMALLY. And talking normally. Admittedly, after Labor Day, this region of N. Michigan is very much populated with retiree tourists. You see hardly any kids, and I've been going thru the UP for decades. I'm 58 and am from there. A woman, appearing over 60, POUNDED on THE SLIDING DOOR...not the front...scared the heck outta me. Thought it was first a bear...some are sighted in town from time to time and some stupid tourists leave food outside or tossed in those bushes you see in their garden, I'd imagine. You do have to be 'bear aware. So, at first? I was. She told us to be quite. We were keeping them up. 'They' could hear EVERYTHING we were saying. It was ridiculous. It was @ 11 P.M., and we WERE only talking normally. But, when we stayed PERFECTLY silent, immediately afterwards, we could hear this woman and her (husband) complaining about us in THEIR ROOM. This place needs a big upgrade in the soundproofing category. read more
